No run today just checking into new thread

Anglaise1 · 18/01/2015 11:46

16 miles from me this weekend. This mornings club run was on our terrain for the semi finals of the France cross country event. Lots of rain and lots of mud.
Good luck Edith and feet. I've never had any blisters on any races I've done, even the 40+km trail runs. Your feet are usually so wet and muddy that I'm not sure that grease would make any difference. Maybe it is different for marathons because on road races your feet take more of a pounding from the concrete than on the softer terrain of trails.

No running from me today, just place marking.

Interested in all this talk of vaseline on feet, so on bare feet and then.socks on top? I know dp used vaseline on his nips when doing the London marathon. But the thought of vaseline on my feet makes,me feel ewww. Plus I am allergic to vaseline.

For muddy running do any of you use waterproof running shoes, some of the trail shoes seem to be waterproof. I pretty much run on pavement, the occasional field so haven't bothered to get trail shoes. Not sure if I would like wolf etc. It does, look kind of fun.

It was me asking about compression socks Btw, not sure if I would like them ad I wear trainer socks, and 3/4 length running tights, I don't like long ones, so may feel odd with my calves covered up!

Mitchy1nge · 18/01/2015 13:15

THERE you all are! Surprisingly enjoyable 10 from me considering how long it took to build the courage to face The Cold. After the first 30 seconds I absolutely loved every step - no food or drink in case of being sick again (grim because end up swallowing or gargling with it) but was at easiest possible effort pace until final mile. Think it's the combination of stuff I'm taking for my back (naproxen paracetamol tramadol and tiny dose diazepam) that is part of that particular problem too. Haven't had a long run as such this week but am pleased to be ending the week at around 30 miles when I started it flat on my back unable to walk without pain.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 18/01/2015 13:34

Phew found you all!

Parkrun yesterday + 10 frosty miles this morning = 1452.63

For those asking about Vaseline, you just smear a tiny bit around each toe to prevent blisters. In extremis (i.e. when you are sitting in the HM car park and realise you have forgotten to bring it) lip salve will do. I also smear a bit along my bra line to prevent the hell that is bra rash.

emummy · 18/01/2015 14:26

Glad you made it out for a run, Mitchy, hope your back is improving. I've never had blisters, not sure why but hope that continues! 6.2 from me this morning, very slow. Went for trail run, the path was very icy in some spots, snowy in the rest, there were big hills and a fallen tree to get over, it was great! And lovely views too, will try to attach picture. So 1458.83

actiongirl1978 · 18/01/2015 16:06

Afternoon all.

Checking in with 10 miles from me, very pleased with myself as i didn't long run over Xmas and last week was only 8 so I feel like I have achieved something today. Legs are in bits though my IT band makes my knees so sore, so I will mainly be spending this afternoon on a foam roller.

This week I have read 'Running with Kenyans' and 'Running like a girl' and so now I seem to be overwhelmed with a desire to run a marathon Hmm is this and urge that will wear off soon or will I have to act on it? Grin

I am already running on VMLM day so thoughts of a last minute charity place are scuppered. I do have a charity I have raised money for a few times though, how soon in advance should I look into getting a place for 2016? Might just go off and google marathons.........

emummy that looks amazing! where are you?!
cinnamon thanks for the tip, I will have a scoot around ebay

1471.3

HesterShaw · 18/01/2015 16:47

Lovely view emummy! Is it the Tay?

1.9 from me - it's slowly creeping up and there were two hills. Hurray!

1473.2

I'm now starting to look at Proper Clothing on Tinternet. At the moment I am wearing a thermal base layer T shit, a cagoule DH bought me to wear when I'm cycling, some fat face "joggers" (annoyingly flared so I tuck them into socks) and just normal daps. Should I get proper running shoes? What's the difference between them and normal daps?

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 18/01/2015 16:47

Do it action Grin. Just look after that IT band (mine is messed up too)

There are lots of smaller marathons around that aren't as hard to get into as the London marathon.

We have an event locally which is over 3 days - a 5 mile on the Friday night, 8.1 trail on Saturday and HM on Sunday, so if you do all three you have run a marathon over the weekend Smile. I did it last year and my cumulative time was a LOT slower than my proper marathon, but the terrain was really hard, I hadn't spent 20 weeks training and it was the midsummer weekend and really hot Smile. I am considering entering it again this year -must be mad--

HesterShaw · 18/01/2015 16:48

PS You can take the girl out of Wales but not Wales out of the girl. Daps = trainers obv.

HesterShaw · 18/01/2015 16:49

Definitely mad OhOne! I don't know how I'll cope when it gets warmer.

Knackerelli · 18/01/2015 16:49

Do it actiongirl!

Marking place sadly as still haven't been out for a run all week due to painful hip/lower back Sad. Fingers crossed the doctor tomorrow will have a magic wand and all will be fine. (Hopeful)

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 18/01/2015 16:52

Not sure what daps are Hester (trainers?), but the advantage of "proper" running shoes is that you can get the right one for your gait and foot shape - so depending on where/how you strike the ground (front, middle or back), how high your arches are and whether you pronate (roll onwards or outwards) you can get the right shoe to make you run more efficiently and protect yourself from injury. You're supposed to change shoes every 300-500 miles.

If you are just starting out and not going far you should be fine with normal trainers to begin with, but worth thinking about some decent ones from a sports shop who do gait analysis if you are going to carry on.

Once you know what brand/style suits you, you can go online and find them cheaper. I'm always a year behind the latest model as they are half the price Smile

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 18/01/2015 16:53

Arf Hester I worked it out Grin

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 18/01/2015 16:57

Hope you feel better soon Knackerelli and the doctor can sort you out.

Hester worth getting some running tights/capris so they aren't flapping around your ankles - Sports Direct usually have good discounts. I pay a bit more for Nikes, because my cheap Karrimors split on me when I was running my first 5K nothing to do with my huge rear end, oh no. I've had one of my pairs of Nike capris for over 2 years, worn and washed them at least once, often twice a week, run 100s of miles in them and they are still as good as new. I also have a long Asics pair, but they have developed a little hole near the pocket.

HesterShaw · 18/01/2015 16:57

A gait analysis? Gosh! Do you run on a machine and they tell you? I know I have high arches.

Not really worried about changing shoes every 3-500 miles. That should take me a decade or two.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 18/01/2015 17:02

Apparently so, although my running shop just made me walk up and down barefoot - they had a running machine but didn't put me on it (and I didn't volunteer Grin)

Once you start it's hard to stop...

I was reminiscing to DH today that I started C25K a few Januarys ago (can't remember how many, probably 3 or 4). Within a year I was running my first HM. I NEVER imagined that people like me (over 40, not that fit or slim, not very fast) ran 5K, let alone 10K or a HM or a full one...

emummy · 18/01/2015 17:56

I know what you mean ohone I did my first 5k last April and am doing first hm in May, having said 5k was far enough!
Glad u liked the photo, am in Aberdeenshire and the river is the Dee, looking towards Aboyne. Am very lucky to have such nice places to run.
Do get proper trainers Hester they feel amazing!

Suzannewithaplan · 18/01/2015 18:00

I have to agree, finding the 'right' trainers for you is a key thing
I've not had gait analysis though

5madthings · 18/01/2015 18:00

Re running tights/trousers. I wear karrimor and have found them great, I like 3/4 length. I have one pair size 12 that I didn't like, only worn once, in a size 12. If anyone wants them just shout and I will stick them in the post.

HesterShaw · 18/01/2015 18:04

Just noticed my "T shit" typo! My fingers are clearly too used to typing the word shit.
