Well done all Grin

I didn't run today (apart from after dd between rides at a theme park - soooo exhausted!) but I have ordered 3 new running tops online. I only went on "to have a look". Oops Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 08/02/2015 20:08

Well done LaughingM, that's a load to knock off!

Why the shoe decision originalpiratematerial?

Love the freezing hair karatekimmi, glad you enjoyed your run!

Well done to your kids emummy!

3.5 miles from me with my canicross club this morning, was lovely out but was quite a slow run so felt very comfortable with dogs pulling too.

Will have to start a new thread soon!

4.6 glorious miles today. Freezing cold for the first 10 mind but then crested the huge hill just as the sun rose and it was lovely from then on.

sassytheFIRST · 08/02/2015 20:12

So 606.2 now.

Mayvis · 08/02/2015 20:31

Well done Agressive, inspirational!

Catching up with the thread slowly.

Got 3.1 to add so 609.3

5madthings · 08/02/2015 20:55

8 milea from me, my longest run ever! And I got my fastest mile ever at 9:37. I.kept putting off running all day, really was not feeling Like it but made myself go once I put the madthings to bed, so glad I did!

617.3

Naicecuppatea · 08/02/2015 21:17

That's fantastic 5madthings. I can't even imagine doing that distance!

Sazorchard31 · 08/02/2015 21:24

Well done 5madthings. Are y o u training for an event? I get lost on everything happening!

5madthings · 08/02/2015 21:29

Yes trying for a half marathon at end of April,I signed up for it with my sister. I must be mad! Am adding a mile or so a week to my long run. Running four times a week. Next week I have a 10km run described as 'undulating' which I figure will be good for me. In Norfolk, not many hills normally! I'll be doing hill sprints this week!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 08/02/2015 22:32

Thank you for the foam roller chat - I have ordered one from Amazon. Can't wait to try it!

AggressiveBunting · 09/02/2015 02:06

Another 4 from me makes 621.3

Congrats to madthings on your longest run and PB mile!! My mum's from Norfolk and she always says "There's a lot of sky" Grin

EdithDickie · 09/02/2015 05:56

Nice one 5madthings! Am also doing a half marathon in April, it definitely feels close now doesn't it!

TheSkinnyProject · 09/02/2015 08:28

Adding my 4.1 from this morning, the birds were singing in the dark. Definitely seeing signs that spring is on its way.

Total 625.4

feetheart · 09/02/2015 09:55

Wow Aggressive, fabulous achievement, I am in awe :)

Well done on longest run 5madthings and to Emummy's DC.
"He collapsed over the line and declared that he was never racing again!" - I think all of us can relate to that, it seems to be my mantra after most races :o

5.5 sunny miles from me yesterday whilst DD was at Church Parade with Guides. First time I have run on my own for ages and I really enjoyed it. I tend to go faster in a pack but the time wasn't too shabby.

630.9

familygermsareok · 09/02/2015 10:39

Well done 5madthings, sounds like you will have no trouble doing hm in April.
I am also doing hm in April, must be a good month for it. I have done this one before and it finishes on a long steep hill for the last mile which I try not to think about! It is all a bit undulating here, though. I used to live in Norfolk and remember the miles and miles of flat fens with a lot of sky Grin.

Lovely sunny run this morning, clusters of snowdrops seem to have appeared almost overnight and I had to take my gloves off half way round.
6.5 so *637.4

PollyPooic · 09/02/2015 12:46

I'm from Norfolk originally and the sky is biiiig, it still is all the way across the border into Suffolk

will be back logging miles in no time, have survived physio and it is a calf tear as per usual, have a clear rehab path to follow (when 25 painless seated calf raises are possible progress to standing, when 25 single leg standing calf raises are possible progress to walking, when walking painlessly is possible progress to run/walk, then back to running - which could all happen quite quickly, it's already so much less painful)

can't remember if anyone else but me was wondering but don't foam roller a calf strain!

actiongirl1978 · 09/02/2015 13:46

Ooh why not polly? I pulled my calf at a race the other week and my PT told me to roll it ( he is v physio type). So glad you are starting to feel a bit better.

Well done everyone on all the weekend running, sounds like we were all delighted with the sunshine yesterday and today. Birds are singing, sun is shining, it's lighter in the morning and evening - I am willing spring to arrive.

I can add 14 miles from a long 11 and a 3 before school run this morning in the dark with my head torch. I have been reading a lot about marathon running and even though I am not training for one, i seem to be thinking I am and getting all worried that I am not running enough or fast enough. I need to stop reading these books and just be happy with what I am managing for the HM.

Suzannewithaplan · 09/02/2015 14:20

re calf strain I'm guessing that any foam rolling or massage would increase the inflammation, in an actual tear then it could just increase the general tissue trauma?

Rollering is intended to be a preventative treatment, stretching the muscle fascia and generally massaging the area.

Thats my understanding anyway...probably different experts have different opinions?

Was there a specific incident which led to the tear Polly?

PollyPooic · 09/02/2015 14:45

in an actual tear type pull it would probably make it bleed even more too? also it would be far too painful, is still quite tender just to run fingers over

don't know specifically what caused it other than running in general Confused

Suzannewithaplan · 09/02/2015 14:59

that's what I was thinking...you said you had a bruise, which would be consistent with torn muscle fibres and bleeding.

Afaik it's pretty normal for exercise to lead to micro tears/muscle damage which then is repaired so that the muscle becomes more able to handle the activity which has stressed it.

I suppose a more serious tear could come from stressing it just a bit too much and/or not quite allowing time to recover?

Anyway, it's great that you have a diagnosis and solid guidelines for rehab:)

familygermsareok · 09/02/2015 15:59

That's great polly, really good you are getting better and have a plan.

Do foam rollers really make a difference in preventing injuries? I've never used and generally been quite lucky in injury dept. Chronic Achilles tendinopathy is all, which I manage by easing off the mileage and increasing frequency of stretches and icing whenever it flares up.
Legs aren't usually achy or anything. I probably don't push myself much.
Is it worth getting one if I am doing fine without?

Anglaise1 · 09/02/2015 16:04

Polly so pleased you have a diagnosis for your calf, and some treatment. I'm going to continue with resting my knee, I was supposed to be doing a 10k next Sunday but it is probably better rest and concentrate on being healthy for the HM I'm doing in marathon prep on 28th Feb. Doing a 10k now and risking making my knee worse probably wouldn't be wise. I've got 4 more sessions with the physio for shockwave treatment which will hopefully do the trick. Am hoping to be running again at the end of the week, I just hope that the rest won't have had too much negative impact on my marathon fitness!
Action concentrate on your HM training, don't worry about a marathon just yet. One step at a time is best. I'm dreading my marathon never having done one before, although I've done a lot of long short trail races (a short trail race is anything under 50k I think...)

Suzannewithaplan · 09/02/2015 16:21

Do foam rollers really make a difference in preventing injuries?

who can say, I just do it anyway just in caseWink
it might just be a superstition, like wearing your lucky socks on race day.
I swear by regular yoga, then again I hear plenty of running gurus who say that stretching is bad.
Its all very confusing!

HesterShaw · 09/02/2015 16:40

3.4 from me. Legs fine, breathing fine - stomach cramps not. Starting to irk me a little now Angry

654.8

Am reading the foam roller info with interest though can't work out how they work really! I guess you get instructions with them.
