Happy new year runners!
Just checking in and place marking. Welcome to all our newbies.
My first run of 2015 will be tomorrow morning, am hoping for about six miles.
My first goal to aim towards is Reading half marathon in March. Only twelve weeks away now! Confused

EdithDickie · 01/01/2015 17:15

Aw cinnamon I am sure you look fantastic and it was surprise at running! I did say to dh most days I was expecting dd "do I look fat or pregnant?"!

5.56 miles for me today. Windy and drizzly. Kinda nice actually! Smile

Good effort on day 1!Grin

TheSkinnyProject · 01/01/2015 17:29

Happy new year everyone.
I did a quick 3 miles this morning

Set a goal on Runkeeper to run 1000 miles in the next year. Did over 600 this year so its a tough goal but hopefully motivating one.

cinnamongreyhound · 01/01/2015 17:32

Has everyone else got the same add for activewear at the bottom of the page? Apparently flattering fit, I personally don't think about what my bum looks like when I run (try to forget about it!) and woman's slinky bum will not make me buy leggings or is that just me?

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 01/01/2015 17:36

I haven't seen that one cinnamon. I have been getting lots of "learn to knit" ads, but as I can already knit and crochet perfectly well I have been
ignoring them Smile

stilllearnin · 01/01/2015 17:48

Can any of you experts offer a novice some advice please? What is the best way for me to get from 5 to 10k? I have limited time but can do two longer runs a week. Other than that I have 30 min lunches (if that) but I do work at home which means I can sit at my desk to eat (and all honking!). I don't have a garmin thingy or a phone with gps.

Sazorchard31 · 01/01/2015 18:02

Despite having enjoyed half a bottle of wine this aft (I cooked for 11) I think I may squeeze a quick run in once dd is in bed! Feeling sleepy after wine and loads of food but a couple of brews should wake me up!

Sazorchard31 · 01/01/2015 18:03

Reading this thread is so motivating!!

spookyskeleton · 01/01/2015 18:06

I hate HIIT workouts whilst doing them but I do feel that they work and like the idea of only half an hour of exercise but god, it hurts!

I try and mix them up with long runs but I do need to be organised and plan my weekly workouts better rather than it being all higgledy piggledy. I am determined to fit in one body pump class a week as well.

No running from me until Saturday's parkrun, I do only run 2/3 times a week so won't be contributing the mileage that some of you seem to do.

Happy New Year Wine

Mitchy1nge · 01/01/2015 18:09

well I love running club because that's the only time I do intervals and hills and tempo runs and shit with running, I do like it but am lazy and just plod by myself otherwise

found insanity workouts incredibly addictive but they did trash my knees a bit, I do like HIIT but just wonder how they can burn fat as effectively as a longer slower workout

Mitchy1nge · 01/01/2015 18:10

anyone done the Athens marathon?

Sirzy · 01/01/2015 19:22

Thankfully I didmy run before wine!

Sazorchard31 · 01/01/2015 19:49

A shocking run as was into the wind for much of it (downside of living on the seafront!) But I can add 3.5 miles, so with 3 from theskinnyproject I make that 69.26 for Jan so far!

Suzannewithaplan · 01/01/2015 19:56

I often run along the coast and if there's a strong head/tail wind I try and arrange the route so that I run into the wind for the first half and then have the wind behind me for the second half.
I often get it the wrong way though and it is a struggle with a strong headwind

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 01/01/2015 20:00

stillearnin there are some bridge to 10K programs around which are based on C25K. A friend of mine was following some NHS podcasts to build distance and speed - I will have a google and see what I can find, but it won't be this evening.

actiongirl1978 · 01/01/2015 20:01

Hi everyone,

I am logging 4 miles today, I was planning a LSR but I frankly can't seem to garner the energy. I also had a strange dream in the night that running alone in the countryside on New Year's Day would leave me vulnerable and I might be attacked Confused so I cut it short and did my standard loop!

I am loving all the newbie chat, our miles will be serious this month!

I didn't post my New Years intentions so here they are...

Run my Southampton Half in April in less than 2.30 ideally 2.15
Actually do some intervals and sprinting, I am yet to be convinced it can help but I should give it a go on a REGULAR basis rather than once a month like I do now!
Lose some weight. I don't need to but I don't think it would hurt ifyswim? A few pounds and I might be a bit faster. Also as mitchy said above! I would also like to nail better nutrition for sports and running! I kind of make it up as I go along which I am not sure is so successful!

stillearnin I think the best way is to work out a route and try running it. I extended to 6, then 7, then 9 and now I can do 15km at the weekends. I was only running 5 in September... Also, slow down to cover the distance or you will wear yourself out. I also recommend some strength training on legs and core, it's made a huge difference to me. There are loads of exercises on google for running strength, they could be done before work or when you are having lunch working from home.

69.76

Sirzy · 01/01/2015 20:02

I wish I lived close enough to the sea to run along the coast! I love it when I am away and can go for a run along the beach.

actiongirl1978 · 01/01/2015 20:02

74.26 corrected after I took too long to type and post!

cinnamongreyhound · 01/01/2015 20:22

I would suggest gradually building up one run at the weekend into your long run will be fine StillLearning, I tended to add a mile then run that distance for two weeks and then add another mile for two weeks etc. I'd also recommend making one of your weekday runs intervals of some kind, I was much quicker when going to week day training although I'd much rather just go for a run!

Did someone ask how to find a club? Or was I imagining it? You can google or check out local races and see which clubs crop up regularly in that or even look at the clubs at your closest parkrun. I was lucky that I was dragged along by ds1's teacher and once there I got on wth lots f people so decided to join.

I think running with others has to involve compromise or being similar paces. My friend I run most with isn't as fast as me but we run together and chat and I run at her pace. If I want to push myself I tend to run alone as I can't talk and run at my fastest pace. It's good to be pushed by someone faster but you can't do all your runs like that, it's demoralising. Our doggy runs are with some super speedy people who do pull the rest of us along but it's nowhere near there fastest pace. They are happy with this for one run a week as we get a lot from running with the dogs and run with faster people other days. I wouldn't do my long run with them or I'd die and equally I wouldn't want them to slow for me. A club helps you find people at your pace as you'll relaise who you tend to run with on social runs or at training and if you get chatting can get a running partner that way.

Mayvis · 01/01/2015 20:22

First ever parkrun for me - 3.1

Mayvis · 01/01/2015 20:23

MrsMargoLeadbetter · 01/01/2015 20:59

I'd like to join pls.

I dabble, but want to do more. Any recommendations for distance trackers pls? An app? Then I can add my distance Smile Currently just track the time.

Sirzy · 01/01/2015 21:01

I use runkeeper

EElisavetaofJingleBellsornia · 01/01/2015 21:08

Hello, I'd like to join too if that's ok. I have been running for about a year though lost fitness in November with a nasty bout of bronchitis - working back up now.
