948.66 includes 9.3 miles from me. Was a lovely chatty run.

HesterShaw · 11/01/2015 16:09

Hello all. Hope you don't mind me butting in. For some reason about five days ago I went for a run. I have no idea why, but maybe the Dry January health kick was insidiously taking over my mind. The next day I went for another. Then another. And so on.

Anyway this morning it was suddenly easier and I ran much further than even yesterday. It probably helps that even after doing no concerted exercise as such, I was insanely fit as a teen, and have always been very slim and generally active. I'm not going very far by the way - only about 2k at the moment, but I am suddenly seized with fervour and have found myself googling "running gear" and stuff (it's all about the clothes, right? Hmm )

The thing is, I have always been slim, bordering on skinny. I don't want to lose weight, I just want to be fitter. Yet I read everywhere it's the best way of burning fat. Will me looking emaciated be a result, do you think? If so, I'm going to have to find another way of being fit - I get enough rude comments about my weight as it is. Or will it be a case of just plateauing with the weight loss as I get used to it?

Thank you and again, sorry for butting in!

HesterShaw · 11/01/2015 16:10

Meant to say "after doing no concerted exercise for many years, I was insanely fit as a teen..."

Apophenia · 11/01/2015 16:24

I don't know, the fat might set in globules. I know if I don't drink mine quickly enough it's stuck to the sides of my cup.

originalpiratematerial · 11/01/2015 16:29

Hester sympathies, when I was "just" running last year but increasing my distance all the time, I felt I was getting too skinny for me iyswim - my arms were really scrawny, boobs had almost disappeared, face looked sunken etc. So I joined a gym and started doing strength training as well as keeping up the running and that has really helped. I'm still slim (bought some size 8 trousers the other day) but much more muscly and feel much better.

Also if you do sprints rather than just run at a steady pace you will in fact gain muscle.

And if you really don't want to do strength training or sprinting you can just make sure you eat plenty after exercising - you need both carbs and protein ime to make sure you don't lose weight.

HTH!

Suzannewithaplan · 11/01/2015 16:31

Hi Hester, if you dont want an increase in activity to result in any loss of stored fuel (ie body fat) then you will need to increase your intake of fuel
ie 'eat more'Wink

If dont have a problem staying slim then you probably already regulate your energy intake without making much conscious effort.
So an increase in activity level will just give you a slightly higher appetite

HesterShaw · 11/01/2015 16:32

Thanks original. If my boobs get any small, they will in fact disappear, so I don't want that.

Sprinting sounds a bit hard I think I'll try the "eating lots" option first. What about those protein shakes body builders use?

Suzannewithaplan · 11/01/2015 16:38

protein shakes are handy if you are a body builder who just cant get enough calories down him/her to support the desired level of muscle mass but really for most people I'd say just stick to real food.

If you want to gain weight I'd say focus on calorie dense food, not necessarily protien

HesterShaw · 11/01/2015 16:40

Excellent thank you

Do you know, this morning's run was a bit of a revelation. I wasn't simply gasping my way round thinking "this is a bit shit". I was listening to birds tweeting and my mind was gently wandering and and stuff. Suddenly I got it.

ThursdayLast · 11/01/2015 16:45

Uh oh Hester

You're one of us now...

Suzannewithaplan · 11/01/2015 16:47

Hester, it sounds as if you are one of those lucky people who, even when 'detrained' has a good level of cardio vascular fitness.

Afaik developing a high level of fitness when you are young helps to increase your baseline.

The rest of us mortals have to grit our teeth and push hard for every small increase in fitness (well thats what it felt like to meBlush)

HesterShaw · 11/01/2015 17:17

I'm not sure of that! Like I said I'm not going very far Blush. I've always had a bit of asthma which makes me feel like my chest is on fire sometimes. And when I get back I always want to do a poo. TMI? I've read Paula's autobiography. I know about her and her bowels...

Anyway, off now to read the thread.

ThursdayLast · 11/01/2015 17:24

I also find that running quite literally gets the bowels moving Grin

That's part of what makes it feel so healthy I think.

The whole 'Runners Trots' thing is terrible! Two miles in and I would HAVE to go! I have IBS anyway so not good. Means I now run close to toilets - pubs, supermarkets etc, and if I am away in the country , I take an Immodium before I goBlush

clary · 11/01/2015 18:12

I did a super-feeling 5.2 miles this morning, a bit chilly and I was a bit sluggish but pushed through to my full planned distance rather than cutting it short as I could've :) making it 953.86

MuseumOfHam · 11/01/2015 18:13

Think the total mileage should be 951.16 as Halle and Swallowed x posted. I have 3.1 to add to that, making new total 954.26

I love the feeling of regularity running brings to my life; rarely get trots luckily, just the health benefits of being nice and regular!

orangeflutie · 11/01/2015 18:14

Hi just popping in to add 8.4 miles. It was really enjoyable despite the cold.
I'm hoping for more good runs and no injuries!

The runners trots are really annoying and seem to happen more as I run for longer. Last year I had a favourite route as there was somewhere handy to stop. Otherwise I had to get home asapSmile

Will now go and read rest of thread.

MuseumOfHam · 11/01/2015 18:21

Oh no more x posting. 954.26 + clary 5.2 + flutie 8.4 = 967.86

Anglaise1 · 11/01/2015 19:32

Did my first cross country run today, 5.7kms, for the département (county equivalent finals). It was tough, but I managed to come in 74 out of 144 even with being one of the oldest taking part, it took me 27 mins. Have qualified for the Bretagne Régional finals in a fortnight but I'm not sure I'll bother as I definitely won't qualify for the national quarter finals! Our club has 2 teams in final and there are other younger runners who can take my place.
I have terrible bladder and bowel problems - we set off at around 15kph today and I'm embarrassed to say I wet myself Blush - you can't stop for a pee on short races. On the plus side there was no bowel problems (as I often have on long runs, thankfully so far never in a race) which would have been much worse....
I hate all gels and protein supplements, but might take one on a marathon. No need on anything like that for a HM or shorter.
In total I suppose around 7 miles from me with the warm up and cool down before the race itself.
974.86

feetheart · 11/01/2015 19:43

So glad the runner's trots isn't just me :)

Lots of amazing miles today, can't believe we are close to 1000 already!

5.1 breezy, hilly cross country miles from me for today. Last race of the season and by far the hardest and most scenic - stunning views made the trek up the HUGE hill seem almost worth it :)

972.96

feetheart · 11/01/2015 19:44

Unsurprisingly x-posted - 979.96

IKYTWTLYA · 11/01/2015 20:09

Just back from 2.4 miles at the end of week 2 of C25K making it 982.36.

I'm frankly terrified of what week 3 is going to bring. The first two runs today were hard enough.

This will get easier, won't it? Or do I just lack the genes?!

cinnamongreyhound · 11/01/2015 20:46

You burn approx. 100 calories per mile Hestershaw so unless you're runnig longer distances it won't make a huge difference. I find I'm hungrier on days I run so it naturally makes me keep balance. Agree about bowels, helps keep everything moving. Since I've been pregnant I struggle more and the run itself does seem to get things moving so I find the last mile I'm uncomfortable and desperate to get home Blush

I didn't run today as dh has been moaning we haven't had a weekend morning lazing in bed for a while and I've already run 4 times this week but I have been grumpy on and off!

cinnamongreyhound · 11/01/2015 20:48

2.4 miles is really good for week 2 IKYTWTLYA, perhaps you need to slow the running down a little. I always found the third of the three runs the toughest, perhaps because I knew what was coming? Confused

RainbowLoom · 11/01/2015 21:12

Hello hello! Right, hope this is the right place to be. After no formal exercise for 6 months, I'm starting running this week.

My plan is to run three times a week (as all kids will now be at school/nursery).

Any guidance as to how to start...hate starting after a period of time away as I get so self conscious about having to stop to catch my breath!!!

Any help and guidance to get over that awful time at the beginning when I need to build up my cardio-fitness? How long to run for really at the start. And does a fitbit help?

Thank you!!!!
