Well...nearly!

Thread for all running chat, no matter how fast or how far you run Smile

Maybe, cinnamon. Strava said I did 1/2 mile in 5:10 which is what my more experienced friends are doing. It was probably downhill!

This was tough, but better than the last one. (Less wind & rain for a start, and I avoided the stupidly steep hill this time!)

I'll take the next one steady.

IKYTWTLYA · 11/01/2015 21:16

Hi Rainbow,

I'm using a C25K app as I'd never run at all before. So I'm doing A LOT of walking between runs! Would that work for you?

RainbowLoom · 11/01/2015 21:26

IKYT...gd app...yes just downloaded it. Yes this looks like exactly what I have in mind!!!!! Thanks!!

actiongirl1978 · 11/01/2015 22:20

Hurrah runners trots my favourite conversation!

So yesterday I tried the lowest fibre diet I could think of by comparison to my normal diet. I ate a whole grain bagel for breakfast ( lower fibre than my normal breakfast of cashews and banana), tinned salmon white bap for lunch and risotto for tea. Followed with an evening snack of crisps Hmm

And I STILL needed a poo after 5 miles. Oh and I had a poo at bedtime last night and went three times before my run at 9am. So frankly low fibre doesn't make any difference. I still have to poo behind trees. I hope to god that there are ports loos on the route of my HM in April!!

And I felt disgusting eating all those carbs, not to mention starving hungry all day. So it is back to fruit, veg, nuts and meat for me and feeling not like a bloated person.

It is the rhythm of the bounce that seems to do it to me.

Sorry if that's TMI....

Some euphoria inducing recreational drugs have a laxative effect, I wonder if there are similar mechanisms involved with running?

I know that the gut is well supplied with serotonin receptors, presumably that is also the case for other neurotransmitters?

Could it be adrenalin related, or just the fear that it will happen causing it to happen?

BlueChampagne · 11/01/2015 22:37

Interesting theory Suzanne

Suzannewithaplan · 11/01/2015 23:01

well, it's nebulous as theories go but I think it kind of holds together :o

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 11/01/2015 23:46

982.36

7.4 miles to add from me today.
I decided to run one of the bus routes around my town today so I could see something other than the canal towpath for a change. It was nice, but rather more hilly than the canal!
So 989.76.

JapaneseMargaret · 11/01/2015 23:54

Have to admit, I had noticed how much more regular I was, after I started running regularly!

3.3 from me this morning, so I get 993.06

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 11/01/2015 23:59

Yes, same here. I had the option of stopping for the loo at 4.5 miles, decided not to and within a mile was really regretting that decision, because I had to hang on for another mile and a half and the toilet at 4.5 miles is nicer and not as cold as the 6.5 mile one.

actiongirl I tried a variety of different diets when I was marathon training (and therefore running more than 3 or 4 miles several times a week) but nothing seemed to make a difference. I even tried running without my morning coffee in case that was speeding up my metabolism but that didn't seem to work.

AggressiveBunting · 12/01/2015 01:00

Talking of bodily functions, my morning run/Crossfit session was abandoned this morning due to DD (2.5) spectacularly covering herself, me, the cot and the bathroom in vomit at 1am. Took 45 mins to clear up (DH away, the bastard), then stayed awake till 3 in case she did it again (she didnt), whilst hastily logging onto my gym and cancelling my 6.15 class booking. Ah well. My left hamstring is a bit sore so maybe it's a good thing (they do say god moves in mysterious ways)

kiwikaterpillar · 12/01/2015 07:01

A rather lack lustre 2.4 from me tonight. I make our total 995.46 now.

I think I may need to rethink my diet as felt so lethargic on the run today. Aiming for 1200 calories a day, as also trying to shift some kg, but think I may need to up that a little as still bf twice a day. I also HATE running into a headwind!

Signed up for a 15km fun run/walk that is in march today. I am hoping to be able to run half of it at least of it.

What other exercise do you all do on your non run days? Jumped on the rowing machine yesterday which I enjoyed but was thinking I should maybe give Pilates a go?

Neeko · 12/01/2015 07:40

Kiwi. 1200 sounds awfully low if you are still feeding and you are exercising. You will be depleting your body's stores of nutrients. I'd add at least 300 on to that or, even better, just eat three, good meals a day of the best quality food that you can and listen to your appetite. The weight loss will take longer but is more likely to stay off. Smile

actiongirl1978 · 12/01/2015 07:56

1200 does sound really low. On my most aggressive diets I was eating 1600 and struggling to exercise. Maybe up the cals and look at what they are consisting of, make every calorie count ifyswim?

Suzanne, I was remind that you suggested that the other day that it might be anticipation, but i was absolutely fine for miles and them bam, the first cramp came and then it was a matter of minutes before I had to stop behind a bush! I wasn't thinking about it happening, I felt totally empty when left, maybe I should just accept it is going to happen.

I suppose I am lucky to be running so rurally, the closest I came to being spotted was two cyclists who whizzed past while I was mid squat behind the tree. I do find that wearing high viz clothing can be an issue though......!

Aggressive - I hope that everything is calm again now and remains calm!

Suzannewithaplan · 12/01/2015 08:33

?For me other exercise is cycling and strength training.
Agree that 1200 cals is very low Kiwi, unless you are a very very small person.
I am somewhat diminutive, not lactating and eat around 2000 cals to maintain.

I've a vague idea the walking has a therapeutic effect on the digestive system because the rhythmic movement has a massaging effect.
People who are constipated are often advised to go for a walk to get things moving.
Maybe running can overstimulate the gut as per your own intuitions Actiongirl??

Mitchy1nge · 12/01/2015 09:53

blimey, my PT did some sums and suggests I eat at least 1000 cals a day just in carbs alone and am not running ridiculously high weekly mileage (nor planning to if I can help it, as little as I can get away with) in fact only did about 19 last week. Am not especially tall (160cm) and I'm quite old too.

Suzannewithaplan · 12/01/2015 10:02

?
A little while ago I did a macro nutrient analysis of a typical day's food intake, I ate 300g of carbs, which I think is 1200 cals, and I think I am as old as Mitchy, maybe even olderShock

Anglaise1 · 12/01/2015 10:19

1000 calories in carbs is a lot. I don't think I'd run that off easily even doing 50km a week! Kimi 1200 cals a day is very low, especially if you are b/f and running. With 1600 you would feel better and still lose weight. And hopefully run more than walk your 15km event in March.
An easy 6.1 mile this morning, a recuperation run after the race yesterday.
Amazon has delivered my copy of the 'Lore of Running' - goodness it is big!! Enough reading material to keep me occupied for the rest of the year, I think.
1001.46 I think??

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 12/01/2015 10:23

morning all,

4 from me

1005.46

Suzannewithaplan · 12/01/2015 10:26

?I got mine a couple of days ago, a massive tome I agree Anglaise, I think it may take me up to a week to get through! ?

Mitchy1nge · 12/01/2015 10:33

Grin that's why if you could only have one book about running . . . have not even attempted to read from cover to cover, just dip in and out

I like that there isn't one single unifying approach but a range of views and evidence to browse

Mitchy1nge · 12/01/2015 10:36

I don't think the idea is to run off the carbs but increase glycogen storage capacity

could be bollocks but will bravely become a study of one and keep you posted

Mitchy1nge · 12/01/2015 10:51

I guess that is running them off eventually Confused

Suzannewithaplan · 12/01/2015 10:54

?I was under the impression that glycogen storage capacity was unregulated by training when glycogen depleted?
Or is a two pronged approach which includes increased carb consumption more effective?
I think if I increased my carb consumption I would actually turn into a loaf of bread (homemade wholemeal of course) ?

Suzannewithaplan · 12/01/2015 11:01

The lore of running does look very good, looking forward to reading it, had you not recommended it I'd have been put off by it's being rather out of date though.
I'm also reading Matt Fitzgerald and indeed anything which looks interesting / useful.
I read born to run and thought it was pants.
There's as much 'bro science' in the running world as there is in the strength training community, imo?
