?The whole ultra distance running thing has really taken off just lately hasn't it.
Suddenly marathons are for lightweightsShock
I'm in awe at the idea of 50k races?!

Funchum, Re childbirth, I seem to remember hearing or reading that it does something to your pelvis which makes you a better runner?
Does that sound right? ?Confused

ultras really appeal because I will never be super fast or even mildly fast, I rarely even do sub-30 5ks unless as part of a longer run where I'm forgetting about pace - my calf problems are very pace dependent and 10 minute miles are a perfect compromise, no need to break a sweat but still get the mental benefits of running

?Also I am hearing more and more about super high weekly mileages, seventy, eighty, a hundred and more.

How can the body deal with the pounding of it all? Yet people do, does your body just adapt? ?

I know top athletes train a lot, but I don't know how 'ordinary' people find the time to do 80 miles a week! I've done 50 this week, but only because I haven't been working and the DC weren't around, usually it is around 30 miles.

I am quite happy to stick to 10ks!

Suzanne I do foam rolling in the evening when watching tv!
As for ultra running, I think the body just adapts, especially if mileage increases gradually. People run twice a day I think, and lunchtimes or get up at ungodly hours of the morning! Moving up to half marathon this year will be enought for me I think!

Hi runners!

I've done a couple of running-in-the-forest events in 2014, which I loved, so I'm hoping to do a bit more trail running in 2015. Any shoe recommendations?

Other goals (apologies to those on the parkrun thread who've already seen these)

  1. Earn my 100 T shirt. I'm still waiting to receive my red 50 one, even though I earned it back in August!
  2. Get round all 19 of the Norn Irn parkruns. I've done 10 so far, 4 are easily enough reached on a Saturday, the other 5 will take a bit more planning.
  3. Complete my training as a "guide jog" ie being certified to assist a visually impaired runner. Largely to help parkrun be more inclusive, but we might be able to field a relay team for the Belfast marathon.

Related to that, I want to stick more consistently to doing 2 sets of 20 each push-ups and squats each morning, and some hula-hooping for core strength.

Can I join - back from a break nursing DP (he is better Grin ). Did 3.7 miles today (6K) - about average for me but I really want to improve distance, speed and form - will be thinking on 2015 goals for the New Year fire tonight.

Well, all this chat of ultras...I'll just sneak in to chuck my 2.3 miles that I managed this morning into the pot. Think that takes it to 986.8

It was lovely, and the first time I've run outside for months. Took DS swimming this morning and planned to head back to run on the tread this pm, but luckily spotted the notice which said they close at 2pm today, which is what pushed me to head outdoors instead. Gym is closed for the next 2 days, so may even do it again!

I started running for the first time when ds2 was 15 months but I wasn't getting back into it funchum8am! I'll let you know how it's going in may though.

I did think my aim seems a bit random the new people, I'm 26 weeks pregnant so my running as long as I can is while I'm pregnant and then hopefully be fit enough by December to run the 10k having stopped for a bit.

I run mostly on trails and have done some Trail races but most do seem to be road. Did my first cross country in November and really enjoyed it. Missed December one as Dh had to work but hoping I'll still be running when the January one comes around its only 3 weeks :)

I am aiming to get my 50 parkrun tee and I would really like to focus on my hill training to get under 25mins at my local parkrun.

I have done 25.01 elsewhere (flat) but living in Cornwall that simply won't happen without a lot of training Grin

Oh funchum after an EMCS in April 13 I was back running that summer - obviously vvv gently, I basically went back to couch25k and worked my way up again.

The most important thing to do is listen to your own body. It will tell you what you're ready for. My need to get out was for my mental health!

Wow everyone, you started a new thread in style!

Welcome to all the new people. The most important thing to remember that also helped me as a newbie is the quote (not sure who by) "if you run, you are a runner".

Don't feel that you aren't qualified enough or have the right gear, or don't look the part physically. Like Suzanne said, if you are running you are doing a lot more than people who are still sitting on the sofa! The endorphins are addictive and the fresh air really helps sort your head out and keep you sane.

Another crap day here, everyone still ill, I did a food shop and then went to the gym for a good weight session and they were about to close, so no exercise, unless you count sprinting up and down the garden with DS 4, or the 10 squats and burpees I did while the kettle was boiling!

So no miles to add, but I am definitely running tomorrow as it is due to be warmer, so hopefully we can kick off the new total with a good number Smile

Hello newbies.

Happy new year runners.

Whoop we smashed 1000 miles.

In other news my club got an award in the 10 mile race I did. As I ticked a box I get a medal. Whoop.

Hi, can I join in?

My 2014 goals were to run 5k in under 30 mins (pb is now 29.20), to enter a race (did the Race for Life) & to run 10k (did it for the first time this morning - it took a long time!)

2015 goals will be to run the parkrun in under 29 minutes, to enter a 10k race & to run 10k in under 60 mins. Smile
