Respect to anyone who was out there today. No miles from me, but just popping in to say that a kindle daily deal today is 5 Minute Fitness by Zen Somebody - it looks pretty good - well illustrated mini workouts, and lots of explanation. Worth 99p anyway.

postmanpatsnewyearresolution · 11/01/2015 05:05

5 miles to add from yesterday making 849.88

karatekimmi · 11/01/2015 06:40

After parkrun was cancelled I managed 6.8 miles running to a cupcake shop!! It was a lovely run, although we had to turn back at on point due to a downed tree!!

562.8 new total

karatekimmi · 11/01/2015 06:42

Sorry must have missed a few pages!!
New total 856.68

louwn · 11/01/2015 09:31

Hi all
I am doing a half marathon 4 weeks tomorrow and only just started training.... work etc got in the way before xmas! I have another in 12 weeks which I am feeling more confident about than this one!! About to go out and try to run for 70 mins...wish me luck!!

No1runner · 11/01/2015 10:02

Long time lurker, first time poster with some questions I hope you can answer.
Have completed the C25K and can run nearly 4km in 30 mins (am old and overweight!)
I would like to enter a 5km fun run which is being held at the end of March so my questions are about what I should do next:
-should I run for 5km so I know I can cover the distance and then try and improve my time?
or
-should I run for 30 mins but try and get faster so my time is fairly respectable?
-lastly my DS (8 yrs) want to do the fun run too. He is fit and healthy - does he need to train or is it reasonable to expect he can just manage the distance on the day? Thanks

karatekimmi · 11/01/2015 10:09

I'm sure more knowledgable people will be along, but if it was me, I'd try to cover the distance first. Is there a parkrun nearby?

3.1 for me to add!!

karatekimmi · 11/01/2015 10:09

859.78

Mitchy1nge · 11/01/2015 10:15

good luck louwn (do I 'know' you from edinburgh marathon thread last year?)

no1runner, I think the advice is generally speed or distance and usually distance (endurance) first, speed comes later - so on that basis I'd focus on completing the 5k in whatever time, you will find adrenaline a great performance enhancer on race day anyway!

Mayvis · 11/01/2015 10:16

No1runner - I've recently completed c25k and made sure I could run a full 5k before I did a parkrun. I think, for me, I have more confidence knowing I can do the distance. My times for running 5k are variable anyway, from 31-34 mins at the moment, depending on where I run (flat/hills/mud) and the weather.

I think I'd take my child out first too, see how he gets on having a run with you. But I'm sure he'd complete the fun run, even if you have to walk. I think finishing is more of a reward at this stage rather than time on the clock.

Mayvis · 11/01/2015 10:18

859.78 + my 3.2 =

862.98

emummy · 11/01/2015 10:57

A lovely run in the snow the morning. No cy bits because the man from the council in his little tractor had already been out and gritted the whole town! Most impressive at 9am on a Sunday I thought. So 7.6 from me, makes 870.58

emummy · 11/01/2015 10:57

No icy bits that should say!

GertyD · 11/01/2015 10:57

862.98 + 3.1 = 866.08

GertyD · 11/01/2015 10:58

870.58+3.1= 873.68

x post Smile

cinnamongreyhound · 11/01/2015 11:00

Hi No1runner, try to build up your time so you can get to 5k even of its a minute at a time. How do you feel at the end of 30mins? My first 5k was 34 mins my PB is now 26mins but others at my parkrun have been trying for a while and are unlikely to get under 30mins and that's fine. When I finished c25k I tried to speed up a bit of I felt ok and did travel further each week but I felt great to have completed a 5k and I carried on running for a bit too :) I would say take da out with you, a lot of children go off way too fast and then have to walk, if he can do some of your runs with you it'll teach him about pacing and chances are he'lol have to stick with an adult in the fun run anyway unless its a specific kids only one.

louwn · 11/01/2015 11:02

Hi Mitchy yes you do - I got to 18 miles in training then got injured so didn't run in the end - did you? Just done 6.8 miles in 70 mins, not amazingly fast but feeling pretty good now.

Mitchy1nge · 11/01/2015 11:08

yay well done! no, I strained my right soleus (grade 2 so not the end of the world but was painful enough for me) and then had all these compensatory issues in my left leg, and just one injury led to another really - achilles problems, plantar fasciitis, suspected stress fractures and so on - am stupid enough to try again (not edinburgh but one in Essex which is much closer to me) but a bit wiser and working with a rehabilitative personal trainer (who doesn't know yet am training for a spring marathon but will tell her this afternoon

what was your injury? it's absolutely gutting isn't it, it really knocked my confidence and I was so anxious about entering any races but survived a half in the autumn (with the lovely cinnamongreyhound! although we didn't make contact Grin) and a seven mile race so am feeling hopeful

MontserratCaballe · 11/01/2015 11:12

5k from me this morning and 3k on Friday. That's 8k which is 5 miles I think so 878.68 in total. Feel a bit better about it now I see it as 5 miles, albeit in 2 sessions. I am old and overweight too, so improvement is very slow. I finished C25k over Christmas and am just going to do that for a bit, as I think bridge to 10k might be a bit much just yet.

Cinnamon, I could barely walk by 28 weeks, let alone run! You are amazing.

MontserratCaballe · 11/01/2015 11:13

X posted with virtually everyone on the distance, sorry

louwn · 11/01/2015 11:23

It was a hip flexor injury, healed with some physio and 3 months off running. The longest I have run since is probably about 7 miles. I feel so much healthier and happier when running! When is your planned marathon mitchy?

Mitchy1nge · 11/01/2015 11:26

May 10th!

so plenty of time to increase long run from 13 to about 20ish - bit scary though

am glad you have recovered fully! do you worry about recurrence?
