Wow mitchy that sounds really muddy!

Good luck mayvis we all have bad run's I think where you just can't get.into the groove. Sometimes changing my playing helps, the more upbeat the better, I have a mix.of scissor Sisters and.pulp and ABBA at the moment!

Mitchy1nge · 05/01/2015 18:45

I wish I could listen to music while I run, has been a long time since I last tried, but the truth is am brainless enough to be quite happy with the sound of my own breathing (in two three four, out two three four) and footfalls or squelches and thoughts tumbling around my head (eg oh look a yellowhammer)

itsveryyou · 05/01/2015 19:32

Thanks so much for all the advice on HM training, you guys are awesome! I run around a 12min mile comfortably, I'm reckoning on about 2hrs 30 ish (maybe more) for the HM. It's a flat course, weather will most likely be good (am in America) I'm not planning to go crazy, but I would like to finish it without losing the will to live! You're right, I'm not naturally a long distance runner, I don't think I'm physically or mentally built for it at all, but am turning 40 this year and want to challenge myself in lots of different ways. DH is also doing the HM so we can train together at the weekends, if we can get childcare. Also a few friends are training too, so I have support. I'll let you know how the next run goes, planning on going tomorrow :0)

Does anyone run with headphones listening to music or whatever during a race? It is a pet hate of mine but I'm sure there must be reasons why people do it. For me one of the pleasures of racing is being with other competitors and on longer races when you aren't too out of breath, chatting. You can't do that when people are listening to their phones/ipods etc.

Mitchy1nge · 05/01/2015 20:03

nah not me

increasingly seems to be forbidden anyway, threats of disqualification etc (although people still do it)

holmessweetholmes · 05/01/2015 20:33

Interesting to read comments about HMs - I've just signed up for my first, but it's not until June! Determined to make it to the starting line this time (had to pull out before because of injury).

5madthings · 05/01/2015 20:46

419.7 with my 3.2 this eve, that was a really good run, I just got into a really good pace and felt like I could have just carried on. Love it when a run feels like that! But am running again tomorrow and following the plan so half hour easy run it was. Plus until last week I hadn't run since Oct/Nov so don't want to push it too much, just build back up gradually.

Re music if running on my own I listen but if running with friends then we just chat. I did the London bupa 10km and you weren't allowed headphones for that. You can get those headphones that don't go in your ear, they go on the boney bit just infront of your ear and transmit the music through like that? Not sure how they work but as they don't block your ear I wonder if they would be allowed and you could still chat with them? No idea Tbh. I like having music as I use it to pace myself and because generally my running is my 'me time' and I like to just switch off. It is nice at times to run with friends but I need a mix of both I think.

EdithDickie · 05/01/2015 20:48

I can't run and listen to music, it's too much for my senses to cope with on top of the physical exertion! Plus I like the sound of my breathing, brain space etc.

2.76 miles lunchtime run today. Really good pace for me as just had 30 minutes (I know not very impressive really but good for me Grin)

cinnamongreyhound · 05/01/2015 21:09

My first hm was all road and banned headphones and actually threatened disqualification so I learned to run without music. Dh doesn't want me to run on my own at the moment so I'm usually chatting. I did struggle with motivation when I was still having morning sickness and tried music again, but it didn't help!

A lovely head torch run in e forest with the canicross club tonight, 3.8 miles to add 426.26 with EdithDickies too :)

Swallowedbyasnake · 05/01/2015 21:10

Just did 3.4 so along with the previous 2.76 think that takes the total to 425.86 almost couldn't face the dark and rain but reading everyone else's posts shamed me into it. I usually listen to music when I run although at the moment listening to Good Omens from radio 4 over christmas.

Swallowedbyasnake · 05/01/2015 21:11

Oops cross posted, 429.66

JapaneseMargaret · 05/01/2015 21:14

I did 5.3k this morning so converting that to miles brings us to 429.15.

JapaneseMargaret · 05/01/2015 21:16

Oops, then it's 432.95 :)

standingonlego · 05/01/2015 21:42

I went to running club for the first time -only just over 2 miles but it was all sprint / run repeats and recoveries (apparently a "pyramid session" for you experts on this thread !) takes us to a rounded up 435.0

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 05/01/2015 21:51

I always ran with music (I started running with C25K), but had to stop when I accidentally put my iPod though the wash in the pocket of my running jacket. I got used to running without and like the headspace now.

I had one song that was just over 10 minutes long which I used to love having on my iPod if I was struggling, because I could put it on and tell myself I'd be a mile further by the end of it Smile

lego that sounds like fun

All this HM talk is making me want to do one even though it would be foolish with my aches and pains

MelanieCheeks · 05/01/2015 21:59

3 miles form me, takes us to 438

I find it hard to run without music - it helps to drown out that negative voice in my head going "just stop now, what's the point?"

AggressiveBunting · 06/01/2015 04:53

15 from me makes 453.

spookyskeleton · 06/01/2015 07:58

I am on the fence about running with music. I always felt I needed it but did C25k in a big group setting and we weren't allowed headphones so I got used to running without it. Plus I rarely run on my own so obviously don't use them then.

However, I do still feel the need for music if I am running on my own/on the treadmill at the gym as it distracts me from the pain and exertion.

I know some runners are vehemently anti-headphones but not really sure why.

Suzannewithaplan · 06/01/2015 08:09

?
I find gym cardio very difficult without my ipod but I listen to podcasts more than music.
Outdoors I like to run and walk whilst listening to podcasts but am happy to run without.
Cycling outdoors I never do with headphones. ?

AggressiveBunting · 06/01/2015 08:11

I think there are a couple of things against them

  • It can screw your pacing if you're what I think hypnotists call suggestible
  • In races it can be dangerous as it reduces peoples' awareness of their surroundings/ positioning relative to other runners, and makes overtaking harder on narrow sections. I have been right behind people and they haven't known I was there - then you tap them on the shoulder and they nearly jump out of their skin.

I think some people also think they're not compatible with the purity of running, but I dont subscribe to that.

I use them on the treadmill so I dont go out of my mind with boredom, occasionally use them on the trails, but know I shouldnt, and never use them in races due to overtaking issues. Plus I always have the risk of running into some wildlife and if there's a disturbed wasp nest round the corner I want to hear them before I come round the corner.

Anglaise1 · 06/01/2015 08:11

When I do long runs on my own, I listen to something, the radio, audiobooks or music.
It is the runners who run in a race with headphones that I find bizarre. In France it is still common to do, sadly.

cinnamongreyhound · 06/01/2015 09:59

I've had that problem AggressiveBunting! My first 10k I was stuck behind someone who could hear me behind and it was very narrow. Road races are ok as they're usually banned but I have seen people hiding headphones and sneaking them out once away from marshals. When I used to use them I only ever had one in so you're still aware of the world around but I'm happy with my own mind these days. I don't mind them but I do hate to see cyclists on the roads wearing them, just because of the danger of it. Yes, you're right the purist runners who been running forever, always with a club and seriously racing are very particular.

ThursdayLast · 06/01/2015 12:40

I couldn't race or parkrun with headphones - isn't the point that you need to be aware?
But I do enjoy listening to podcasts as I run, usually comedy ones. If they're topical it's usually how I find out what's been going on in world!

With the Garmin though it seems kind of pointless taking my phone too - I'm sure at some point it'll be worth it, on a longer run maybe.

Mitchy1nge · 06/01/2015 13:22

464 I think (adding 11 to the last total I could find)

emummy · 06/01/2015 14:41

2.2 from me, just a wee run to test my sore adductors and it was ok, phew. Afterward went to my friend for a sports massage, and it seems adductors are the least of my worries! Oh dear. More painful massages to come!
I can't run to music, it doesn't work for me, so I listen to the women's hour podcast for distraction. I don't mind running without it in a race though.
466.2
