I think just keep running those longer distances itsveryyoy. The more you do 5 miles the easier it becomes. I was regualrly up to 6 miles when I started training for my hm and so just added a mile a fortnight. Once you start pushing yourself if just becomes more normal. If you can, get someone to run with you at least some of the time. It may also be that you're not a longer distance runner and you'll do one hm and say never again! I think you find your favourite distance but you'll never know until you push yourself :)

actiongirl1978 · 05/01/2015 09:14

Itsveryyou I am also HM training! I am currently getting my distances up by running VERY VERY slowly! So start running at your normal pace then force yourself to slow down. It will take you longer to run but you will find it quite comfortable to cover the distance. I am up to nine slow miles, though have had two weeks off where I've done a couple of ten k's so will start back at 8 or 9 next Sunday.

I am still not sure I will ever have the strength or energy to run a half marathon at 'race' pace, I think I may run around slowly!

More experienced runners, I assume that you don't run a HM at the same speed as a 10k unless you are very fit and very experienced?

Sazorchard31 · 05/01/2015 09:17

Actiongirl1978 ive done 3 hm and only ever run them at my normal training pace, you don't want to start off too quick doing what you think is race pace only to find yourself struggling half way.
I'm a slow runner, guessing experienced runners do run quicker on race day!!

No- otherwise you're running your 10k too slowly Grin or rather, not as fast as you could run it.

With a HM, they key thing is not to get sucked into the "pack pace" but make sure you run the first few miles nice and steadily- you can always speed up in the second half, but if you go out too fast, you suck through your glycogen supplies rather than optimising fat burn, and then it's very difficult to get that back (end up needing gels etc which you shouldnt really need in a half). It's also much more mentally tough to be getting overtaken in the latter stages than to be overtaking. Here speaks the voice of experience - 43km trail race. Placed 4th after 40km, placed 11th at the end. GUTTED.

Anglaise1 · 05/01/2015 09:52

You definitely need to pace yourself more for a HM. If you know your speed for a 5km or 10km you can predict your HM time with this kind of www.mcmillanrunning.com/calculator
The calculators have been pretty accurate for me so far. Yet to see if they still are for a marathon.
6.2 miles
350.1

Apophenia · 05/01/2015 09:58

5k from me this morning.
353.2.

5madthings · 05/01/2015 10:28

So I tweeted saucony UK and asked them if as an adult but with small feet I can wear the juniors, they said the juniors are suited for 'growing feet' and that I should get the women's ones... But the specifications read the same...I am going to go try some on I think.

EdYouKateShaun · 05/01/2015 10:44

3 from me this morning. I'm 30 miles into my 100 mile running challenge. Tired legs!

383.2

cinnamongreyhound · 05/01/2015 10:51

Interesting calculator Anglaise1, based on my 5k time my expected hm matches my fastest hm time but the 10k is nearly 2mins faster than my pb. Maybe that's why I enjoy 10k's more, because I'm not pushing myself as much as I should be!

HalleLouja · 05/01/2015 11:09

5mad I have bought kids trainers before. They obviously don't want you to buy them as even without the VAT differences they are cheaper cynical moi?.

Suzannewithaplan · 05/01/2015 11:25

I'm with Halle on the kids trainers issue, in what way are they suited to growing feet I wonderHmmHmm

5madthings · 05/01/2015 11:43

halle yep.they are loads.cheaper! I.have found some.on.sale for £25! As.opposed to £60-90 for women's ones, I am going into town and.will try some on but for that price difference they have to be worth trying!

feetheart · 05/01/2015 11:47

At the opposite end of the scale - does anyone run in men's shoes?
Thought I might have more chance of getting men's shoes in my size in the sales - wear 42 normally but run in 43 which are as rare as hen's teeth.
Not sure if a man's 43 would come up bigger than a woman's, they can do in ordinary shoes.

Suzannewithaplan · 05/01/2015 11:55

?
I absolutely would run in men's shoes if they fitted but they tend to start at a 6 and I am a 4 to 5
Afaik men's shoes are often wider and I find many shoes too narrow ?

Suzannewithaplan · 05/01/2015 11:57

Thing that bugs me most about women's shoes is all the fucking pinkAngry

Suzannewithaplan · 05/01/2015 11:58

excuse my languageBlush

stilllearnin · 05/01/2015 12:11

I run on men's 8.5 but I'm no pro so I don't know if they are too wide. They fit me well, I suppose you'll have to try some on. I am non girly but not keen on the grey I ended up with.

stilllearnin · 05/01/2015 12:12

Sorry I meant not sure if they are wider than ladies 8.5

feetheart · 05/01/2015 12:13

I'm with you Suzanne both with the language and the pink :o
I don't like pink - I'm 5'10" with feet to match and look like a beetroot after 2-3mins. Pink is SO NOT my colour Angry I am usually found in sports shops muttering darkly whilst surrounded by various shades of the damn colour.

Suzannewithaplan · 05/01/2015 12:20

I think it is partly that physical prowess is traditionally a masculine trait.
Sportswear manufacturers probably ultimately sell more if they present products aimed at women in such a way that said women are reassured that they are still feminine.

Suzannewithaplan · 05/01/2015 12:21

It wasn't so long ago that women were thought incapable of running marathonsShock

Anglaise1 · 05/01/2015 12:24

I hate the pink too! Just treated myself to some purple and green Asics, before the only models that were in stock or my size were pink..some really pink Angry
I'm a size 42 in running shoes too, so could wear men's, but my feet are really narrow so not an option.

Suzannewithaplan · 05/01/2015 12:35

pink must sell, or they'd not make so much of it?

Mitchy1nge · 05/01/2015 13:11

but I love my pink trail shoes they're soooo pretty
