Well...nearly!

Thread for all running chat, no matter how fast or how far you run Smile

Suzanne I enjoy the experience of race day, the excitement, the presence of other lunatics who like running too, and the medal after. I don't know if I ever really peak, just try to be prepared so I can enjoy it. I try to do a good time but will never be better than middle of the pack, so as Sirzy says, I am only racing myself.

Sirzy · 02/01/2015 21:40

10th may apophenia. It is a fantastic day, although I hope it's cooler this year

EdithDickie · 02/01/2015 22:26

Hi GirlOutnumbered, we're not too far away from each other. Live in East Cornwall, used to live near Tavistock Smile

I ran on the moor over the Christmas break and it was lovely.

Suzannewithaplan · 02/01/2015 23:07

I think I'll wait until I have a few more months of consistent running under my belt before I look at entering something, very interesting reading other peoples experiences an motivations for competing:)

One thing I like about running is all the data it generates, pace, cadence, heart rate, elevation, I do love spreadsheets charts and graphs:o
And then there's looking on google earth for new routes (or do I just have too much time on my hands Blush )

newdaytomorrow · 02/01/2015 23:23

hi everyone, after reading this thread I thought i'd join in. especially as further up I saw someone said I only race against myself, tomorrow when i'm right near the back at parkrun trying to get below 35mins and being overtaken a lot by faster runners I shall try hard to remember that.
also someone said about smelly running clothes....I have a mix of white vinegar and water (50/50 mix) that's mixed in a small juice bottle with a hole pierced in the top so I can squirt it out onto stinky areas of clothes. after its had few moments to soak in and I've washed it on 30 degrees no smells. needs doing every few wears but it works.

Mitchy1nge · 02/01/2015 23:40

my kit always smells a bit funny after a while and I'm not v sweaty, think it's just technical fabrics? Only wash with normal detergent in normal way

think others have covered the appeal of races, but I even like how anxious I am in the build up in a weird way, it's a heightened state isn't it, but also such a buzz on the day - I like the whole being in a crowd with a common goal but doing it alone type thing

an added incentive for me this year is meeting up with siblings, especially my brother who is back in the UK for the first time in decades, he's a super fast runner who doesn't have anything to prove so will happily lope along at my pace for a few miles before zooming off

not that I ever stick to any plan but I kind of like making them to deviate from and having a bit of structure to keep my running from either getting out of hand or falling by the wayside

EdithDickie · 03/01/2015 05:47

Totally love all the geekery too Suzanne. And dh absolutely loves to see my graphs and figures too I'm sure! Grin

GirlOutNumbered · 03/01/2015 08:10

Hi EdithDickie!
Where do you run? Do you use trekking shoes or normal trainers?
I guess you would run on Bodmin moor?

Suzannewithaplan · 03/01/2015 10:17

?
Edith, I find it helps me to look at the long term trends, even if today's run was harder and slower than last time I went out I can look at the graph / chart and see exactly what progress I've made.
Also what someone else said about beating / competing against yourself , I can look at the totals for last month and make sure this month is better

spookyskeleton · 03/01/2015 10:38

147.4 miles as I have done a parkrun this morning. My second ever one and it was slightly easier than first time round which was about 6 months ago but it should have been as I am a much more experienced runner now. I enjoyed it Smile

EdYouKateShaun · 03/01/2015 10:39

3.1 from me again so we're at 147.43.

WiseKneeHair · 03/01/2015 11:11

Thanks for the welcome everyone.
cinnamon I have been on various weight loss/ MFP threads on MN over the last couple of years. We are MFP friends but I am HappyKite on there. Wink
I'm very impressed with the distances some of you can do. I have never raced, but there is a series of evening races in the summer I want to do this year. 4 races over two weeks on a Tuesday and Thursday evening. I think the distances are 5k, 10k, 3 miles and 5 miles. A group of colleagues have ran them, but chickened out the last two years because I know I will be the slowest!
Wanted to run this morning, but I am waiting for the call from DS1 to collect him from a sleepover, so will have to run later.

MelanieCheeks · 03/01/2015 11:20

Another parkrun to add, which I think brings it to 150.6

Apophenia · 03/01/2015 11:22

152.7 Grin

Knackerelli · 03/01/2015 11:57

A wet and cold parkrun here, so 155.9.

As others have said, I like racing but against myself. I gain in distance and like to look at the charts too. Having said that, my last race I had to give myself a talking too as I was shaking beforehand!

Sirzy · 03/01/2015 12:02

New shoes here and so comfy. Shame I probably won't have time to get out today

Suzannewithaplan · 03/01/2015 12:14

?
Shoes!
What shoes Sirzy?
What were you running in before?
Do tell, we're all obsessed with running shoes (well I am anyway :o) ?

yearofthehorse · 03/01/2015 12:20

First time on here but back from ParkRun with my ASD 9 year old. Cold, wet and muddy, lots of moaning from him but now delighted to see over 2 minutes off his PB. Can we include his km? 165.9

Sirzy · 03/01/2015 12:21

I was in an ascis gel pair now got some saucony ones

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 03/01/2015 12:30

Hihorse and welcome. I think we're still counting in miles, so I make it 152.7 + 9.3 (your, my and your DS's parkrun) = 162

I heart Saucony Sirzy

Sirzy · 03/01/2015 12:31

It's my first pair but wearing them round the house they are comfy and so light!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 03/01/2015 12:34

Which ones do you have? Mine are Triumphs. I love them!

Sirzy · 03/01/2015 12:42

Grid Virrata

GertyD · 03/01/2015 13:01

If we run, do we say so here to get a total mileage? I did 2.1 miles on 1st Jan.

ThursdayLast · 03/01/2015 13:23

That the aim Gerty I'll add yours this time Wink

And my parkrun (nearly got blown away) 162 + 2.1+3.1= 167.2
