I hate running on a treadmill would rather run in snow!

emummy · 02/01/2015 18:50

Suzanne I wore the calf sleeves with capris, looked a bit mad but have given up trying to look cool when running. They fit perfectly, didn't slip, felt really comfy.
I enter races cos it's fun and gives a bit of focus to running. It has been nice over the winter just doing the running and building up my fitness, but I like having a race to look forward to. And the medals are good! Doing a 10k in April which will be a family affair, with 2 dcs in the kids race and dh doing the 5k, then the half in May, after that we'll see!

Sorelip · 02/01/2015 18:56

Adding 3.11 to make 138.93

Suzannewithaplan · 02/01/2015 19:00

calf sleeves with capris and then take them off when you get too hot?
hmm
then again might aswell just roll up the running tights if your legs get too hot?

Suzannewithaplan · 02/01/2015 19:10

then again those tights are so tight I dont think I'd be able to get them up over my knee's.
I bought a pair of asics tights, lovely soft comfortable waistband but where they are so tight in the leg they sort of drag down as I run so I had to wear shorts over them to keep them upBlush

emummy · 02/01/2015 19:11

I didn't get hot; it was about 4 here, with chilly wind. My legs don't usually get hot, my arms do, and then body after that, so I didn't need to take them off. Calf sleeves aren't easy to get on & off, don't think I'd like to do it when running!

spookyskeleton · 02/01/2015 19:15

Quick question, do you all wash your running gear normally or do you wash them at a huge higher temperature/with different washing powder?

I am asking because my gear seems to smell after a few wears despite me always washing them quickly - they just seem to smell stale and unpleasant (am paranoid as my friends drive home from our run the other day with the window open despite it being freezing outside and her always being really cold BlushBlush)

emummy · 02/01/2015 19:20

I wash mine on a short cycle at 30, with no fabric softener, I don't think they smell bad! Ds hasn't commented anyway, and he has the sharpest sense of smell of any human I know!
Suzanne shorts are very useful for that aren't they! My Ronhill tights stay up very well though, as long as I give them a good tug up and tie the tie thingy tightly

Anglaise1 · 02/01/2015 19:31

I'd never dared race before joining a running club. I'm glad I started.
The pleasures of racing:
You don't know how fast you can run until you race. The adrenalin and the racing against others means you can push yourself to limits you didn't know were possible before.
The feeling of exhaustion and finishing a race is incomparable to just going out for a jog.
Beating other people (especially those women who are wearing super running kit and intimidate you no end at the start)
The camaraderie you get from running in a race with other club members, or friends and family to cheer you on is fabulous and can really boost you at the end of a race
Getting a nice T shirt for competing;-)

OTOH the pressure of racing plans can be difficult, as can not doing a better time than your previous race.
Sometimes I'd rather go out for a nice long slow run with the dog than do intervals!

cinnamongreyhound · 02/01/2015 20:09

I wash mine with everything else but mine do smell musty sometimes if they stay in the drawer for too long after washing. I've always thought it was a bit odd but don't know if alternative washing would help.

Suzannewithaplan · 02/01/2015 20:15

Thanks for explaining Anglaise, that makes sense, but it's the pushing yourself beyond previous limits which concerns me.

Pushing your cardio vascular system is one thing but I'd be worried that pushing my musculo-skeletal system would do more harm than good, certainly thats what puts me off really long events like marathons.

If you are competing don't you really need to have more down time to recover from the whole thing of peaking for an event?

I think I prefer to go at a steadier pace year round.
(I'm prob just making excuses because I'm too slow to ever do well in any kind of raceBlush :o )

Sirzy · 02/01/2015 20:20

I only race against me. I know I am a slow runner so for me just to complete the 10k last year was the aim, this year I will aim to beat my time.

And after the earlier discussion I have just ordered a Fitbit for myself.

cinnamongreyhound · 02/01/2015 20:21

I always ache after a race for a few days which I never do after just running so it shows I always push harder and do tend to have a few days off but never as much as a week so not too bad.

5madthings · 02/01/2015 20:22

138.93 plus my 3.1 miles makes 142. 03 given I haven't run.since October? The.fact that I managed 5km in under 35 mins is a miracle!

5madthings · 02/01/2015 20:25

I wash mine in a normal wash with coloured stuff.with fairy non bio. I am going.to invest in another.running.bra though, mine.felt uncomfortable a bit today, but.that could just be that I haven't worn it in.ages.

I.had my reflective jacket on.and ended up pushing up the sleeves as I felt warm, bit windy but nice out.

IKYTWTLYA · 02/01/2015 20:26

I'm back with a tiddly 2.3 miles so 141.23?

Did week 1 run 2, although technically my first following the app. I feel a lot more human after tonight than I did on Wednesday, though.

I can't believe I'm actually enjoying this! Grin

IKYTWTLYA · 02/01/2015 20:28

Sorry, 144.33 then

5madthings · 02/01/2015 20:33

Every bit counts IKY!

I am all grinny now, post.run smug! See.I really enjoy it.when I do it, but.then life.gets in the way and.I stop. This time I will be keeping.it up! The half marathon in April and I need to be toned for my.wedding in may! Plus mentally it makes me feel good.

spookyskeleton · 02/01/2015 20:35

I am a bit on the fence about races. I have done a few 10ks and not sure I enjoyed them, it has just been the achievement of completing them. I find training runs much more enjoyable.

My last official 10k, my friends paced me as I wanted to try and get under 1 hour 10 minutes and I hated every minute of it as it was hard, I struggled to talk and wanted to stop constantly - it really wasn't worth the effort just to see a particular number on the clock.

I am doing a parkrun tomorrow but will be near the back and I am not competitive enough to push myself to when it starts hurting, would rather just jog along at my own comfortable pace.

Neeko · 02/01/2015 21:02

I'd like to do a 10k this year just to prove to myself that I can. I can't imagine myself ever aiming for a specific time but then I never used to be able to actually imagine myself running so you never know!

trainersandaches · 02/01/2015 21:03

Thinking of chancing a new park run tomorrow...

Anglaise1 · 02/01/2015 21:20

Suzanne yes, after a race you should rest as you do push yourself hard. But it doesn't have to be that long. I've never rested longer than a few days even after a long race.
Its probably not best to start with a marathon (although some people seem to have no problem), but better to build up gradually. You could start with a 5k, then 10k, then half marathon, then a marathon...and then see which event suits you. Or try trail racing which is less against the clock and more to do with endurance, pacing yourself and getting through obstacles like rivers and mud (and often more relaxed and friendly). The euphoric feeling at the end is the same no matter which race you do. And once you have done one, it can get to be quite addictive and you might find you want to push yourself further. Or you might decide it isn't for you and just keep running for yourself. It's certainly worth trying, even if you decide not to repeat the experience.

GirlOutNumbered · 02/01/2015 21:23

Just found this thread! Can I join in?
I started running last year, got to 7k and then just let it slide. I think I could probably still do 5k, but need motivation!
I live on Dartmoor and really want to try more off road stuff.

Apophenia · 02/01/2015 21:26

I'm doing the Manchester 10k in April. Haven't got anywhere near to 10k yet so I'm not going to be racing anyone! Grin

Apophenia · 02/01/2015 21:26

Or possibly May??
