Open for any runners, or any runners looking to get their 'mojo' back.

I have a 10k on Sunday which I am feeling less than prepared for, and the stomach bug is just adding to that. I have a feeling I will be the slowest runner!

My iPod nano doesn't use gps - it's just between its receiver and the sensor on my trainers.

It was too short on the park run (4.85 km) and then too long today (3.22 k instead of 3.06). I wouldn't mind so much if it were consistent but this is too much variation!

DP just muttered about getting me a garmin watch but I'll try and just steal his for a bit Grin

Blatherskite · 03/11/2014 15:42

Get a Garmin Miranda!

DH wanted to borrow mine this weekend as he'd left his in his room he rents near work. Seeing as the last two times he's borrowed it he has a) swapped it into kms and confused the hell out of me the next time I ran and b) not reset the watch so his run was added onto the end of my last one necessitating much faffing with file data to try and remove it, I said "No".

He wasn't impressed.

MirandaWest · 03/11/2014 16:01

But I like listening to music and being able to press a button and it talks to me how and says how far I've gone and it tells me when there's 400m, 300m left etc. I think I like the instant verbal feedback (and listening to mysic)

ScienceRocks · 03/11/2014 16:30

I've just bought a garmin Smile

You lot are a terrible influence Grin

Mooogles · 03/11/2014 16:32

Some great parkruns this weekend!

I did a rainy 5k yesterday and 6k today on the treadmill - am soo much faster on the treadmill..

So total is now 90.6.

I want a garmin!

TheBigBumTheory · 03/11/2014 16:32

Science rocks

You won't regret it-they are fantastic.

originalpiratematerial · 03/11/2014 20:21

Hello all! Been out injured but have completed a second rehab run (following a plan I read in RW) today and so far a cautious thumbs up!

Hope everyone's well. Off to read the thread now!

Quick question - was just looking at high viz running jackets on SportDirect website - they have Karrimor fluoro ones for 17.99 which sounds like a bargain! Anyone got one? Are they ok? I need one as my current running jacket is too dark - I went running at dusk on the canal bank tonight and felt really worried that a cyclist might hit me!

originalpiratematerial · 03/11/2014 20:22

I did 1.6 miles today, if we are keeping a tally for November? Smile

Blatherskite · 03/11/2014 21:16

I did 5 miles tonight. It was really good. One of those runs that just feels easy and enjoyable.

So with pirates 1.6 that makes 97.2

EdithDickie · 03/11/2014 21:51

Science you will love it Smile

Runkittyrun · 03/11/2014 22:31

6 miles in November from me (5m race + warm up) - 103.2 new total. It was yesterday's local clubs Cross country race with a fair bit of rain in places. Lovely marshalls, very understanding drivers waiting as ~500 runners went past!

The race makes my total for this year to date an even 1200 miles Smile

Originalpirate - hope you're doing well with getting back to it. I'd give it a go - sounds a good price! I've got a adidas gillet from Runners Need in the sale (full price was Shock)

feetheart · 03/11/2014 22:36

4.8 to add from me for tonight - good tough run with club :)

108

ThursdayLast · 04/11/2014 08:08

Welcome back original, I think the hi vis-ness of the item doesnt really depend on price, so you'll probs be ok with that.
I recently treated myself to a vvvv bright yellow nike jumper and the quality is amazing. I was also v glad to be wearing it last week when I was essentially running in a cloud Grin

Haven't managed to get out yet since parkrun, real life and all that.

ScienceRocks · 04/11/2014 10:06

2.8miles from me this morning. I thought I had gone further because it took me nearly 35 minutes but the dog, the cold, and a hill must have slowed me down a bit Sad Glorious morning for a run though, really sunny, and actually quite dry under foot.

Total 110.8

Can someone please give me idiotproof instructions on how to download the couch to 5k plus podcasts? I think there is a stamina one and a speed one, and I'd like to follow something to build my confidence now I have finished the C25k.

actiongirl1978 · 04/11/2014 10:45

Morning all, I agree with ScienceRocks, a stunning morning for a run today, Hampshire looked glorious in the mist and sunshine.

A 3 miles from me bringing the total to 113.8

Still struggling with my new trainers - after gait analysis and trying on about 9 pairs, I was given the Brooks PureFlow. My left foot seems to have adapted to the midfoot strike, but my right foot is still heel striking and my achilles and calf are grumbling considerably. Does anyone else have the PureFlow?

OriginalPirate - I have a brilliant orange highviz jacket from Decathlon. Its a few years old, but I prefer it to my ronhill one and I think they have some pretty stylish ones in this year, you can get them online.

Mitchy1nge · 04/11/2014 10:55

aren't you MEANT to heel strike if you heel strike naturally?

I was told that running on my toes (and there are just toe prints in the mud) was bad over longer distances but that altering my gait could make things much much worse

emummy · 04/11/2014 11:01

3.9 this morning, interval session and a real slog. One of those runs where I just couldn't get my legs to move freely. Sigh. Still, it's done.
117.7

actiongirl1978 · 04/11/2014 12:55

I think my problems arise from the PureFlow shoe which has a much dropped down heel area to encourage mid foot and discourage heel strike, so my mid foot is slightly raised in comparison to the heel. This means when I heel strike my Achilles has to stretch more than it should, leading to pains and niggles! Off to Pt tomorrow going to get him to watch me run and look at the shoe then may return it for a more normal shoe.

Brooks market the PureFlow as 'transition' between traditional running shoes and 'barefoot' running.

Mitchy1nge · 04/11/2014 13:10

oh right

it sounds a tiny bit dodgy but there is so much conflicting advice and thought on these things it's hard to know what to make of any of it

I only know that I've been told my running style could potentially be a factor in my vulnerability to calf strains, achilles tendon problems, plantar fasciitis and so on but that it could be worse if I tried to change it - that was just one physio though, although she was at least a runner, it was only her opinion

a chunk of my pt session does involve trying to 'walk normally' Hmm on a treadmill, using the whole of the bottom of each foot as my left heel rarely touches the ground at all

Mitchy1nge · 04/11/2014 13:12

the transition to barefoot thing sounds dodgy I mean, I thought everyone was over the whole barefoot stuff now Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 04/11/2014 13:56

I have a podcast app on my phone ScienceRocks, you can just search nhs and it'll pop up on that.

I'm a firm believer in run as you're meant to but I do know one lady who I run with who is actively changing her hair as its causing her a lot of problems. She's having physio and got special Pilates exercises to do.

Blatherskite · 04/11/2014 14:01

If you take off your shoes and run - along a beach for example where you're not worrying about shredding your feet - you'll probably find that you will naturally fore-foot land. It's only because we wear hugely padded and cushioned running shoes that heel striking is possible and there is a theory that this is what causes most running injuries as the forces going through our heels are not what they were designed to cope with. I know quite a few barefoot runners - some who favour Vibrams and some who run in Luna sandals, even going totally barefoot sometimes - and they do all seem to be fairly injury proof. The change from heel striking to fore-foot landing can cause some problems along the way though.

They all swear they don't get cold feet but I'm not convinced ;)

I finished reading "Born to Run" a few weeks ago and the inference in there was that running shoes are an invention of Nikes that do nothing for runners but cause injuries and make Nike money.

I think Vibram were forced to change some marketing that was proved to be bullshit though Grin

Mitchy1nge · 04/11/2014 14:07

that's interesting, I never finished born to run (but have started eat and run, and I liked running with the kenyans!)

I don't get on well with very cushioned or any kind of stability shoes, I like some contact with my terrain, but I definitely run the same barefoot or shod.

actiongirl1978 · 04/11/2014 14:13

We'll I have read around the subject comprehensively since I got the shoes and I am no wiser!

I only got the shoes as they felt most comfortable in the shop, so there was no plan to buy transition shoes. But as I have them, I may as we'll try and be a bit conscious about their impact on my running, even if so I far I have done nothing but worry!

My personal trainer wears the vibrams and another more conventional barefoot shoe and swears by them, so I do at least have someone who knows about this stuff in real life. I am so achy after my hilly three miles this morning and it feels like my hip flexor this time, honestly I might just need to adapt to them. They only last three hundred miles anyway, so I can re-evaluate in six months If need be and if I haven't damaged myself beyond repair by then!

The shop have said they will exchange them, but then I am worried I will go back to traditional shoes and like blathers says put all the pressure back into my back - I have always had lower back pain after a run, sorts itself out on the foam roller, but I haven't had that at least with the new shoe.

Pah, I only went in to the running shop with a pair of Brooks ghosts in mind and came out with a whole new reading obsession!

ScienceRocks · 04/11/2014 14:59

Thanks cinnamon. I assume the woman who you mention as changing her hair is actually changing her autocorrected gait? Grin
