Open for any runners, or any runners looking to get their 'mojo' back.

I have a 10k on Sunday which I am feeling less than prepared for, and the stomach bug is just adding to that. I have a feeling I will be the slowest runner!

Hello everyone, I'm still here, more of a lurker. Have a half marathon next month and still running the london marathon.

Did 7.2 miles this morning. Had a bad case of shin splints over a month so and now my calf is playing up but I will give it a good go with the foam roller. I don't know if it's my shoes though? I only bought them in the summer so surely they can't be worn out yet?

I went on holiday a month ago too so I took a good 6 weeks off and now it struggling to get back into doing my 8 minute miles but today I did improve!

All need to overhaul my diet, I'm a bit chunkier than I was pre-holiday. Can I ask what sort of things you lovely lot eat on a regular basis? Thanks!

zombiesheep · 19/10/2014 21:56

So many typos hopefully someone can understand Blush

Knackerelli · 19/10/2014 22:11

Hi biscuits (love the name btw!) I take my DD to parkrun sometimes and she's 6. She doesn't do any other 'official' exercise apart from normal playing about and can easily walk that far. My concern was that she'd find running it too far and be put off it. Fortunately she is very determined and although has frequent walking breaks (and moans!) has now done her fourth parkrun and enjoys it. Am trying to motivate her now to beat her pb of 35mins which isn't that far off mine Blush the promise of an ice lolly at the end never goes amiss either! You could always take her along with no pressure to finish to see how she does?

IrianofWay · 20/10/2014 08:42

Panic! Running my first 10k next sunday and on my last practice run yesterday I started to get a pain in the arch of my foot. Its bearable but I suspect it won't be if I run. Will find out on Tuesday. Shit! I guess I could just take lots of painkillers and run through it.

IrianofWay · 20/10/2014 08:44

6 miles so 583.7

TessTackle · 20/10/2014 10:02

5miles & all 5 of them felt so good!

Hi Zombie, I tend to eat a lot of chicken(mainly grilled) with various veg, sometimes brown rice. Soups, stews, the occasional cheeky pasta bake. Just cutting out junk food has made a massive difference and upped my recent weightloss I reckon. I'm drinking only slim fast this week though GrinBlush my sisters wedding is on Saturday!!!

588.7

BetsyBell · 20/10/2014 10:39

zombie - I try and steer clear of junk. Currently on a no-sugar couple of weeks. Rarely drink booze, aim to eat mainly complex carbs (so brown rice, quinoa, Vogel bread etc rather than white carbs), full fat yogurt, lots of nuts & nut butter, plenty of fruit, veg, meat, fish & eggs. Also happily eat cheese & butter and do not hold back on using good quality oils daily in dressings etc but don't generally eat fried foods.

On this delicious regime (along with plenty of exercise) I've maintained a lean, slim body all year having lost 4 stone over a couple of years previously. I lost the weight by gradually converting my food intake to decent stuff as above, and then I did 5:2 fasting for 18 months. I still occasionally fast but find I've reached a happy medium and seem to be training up to 5 days a week (martial arts plus running and gym stuff) so have not felt the need for a few months!

Cutting out junk and booze while training is a great and healthy fast-track to lean-ness, and you feel great Smile

Mitchy1nge · 20/10/2014 11:10

fuck this thread moves fast! that;s v encouraging pp's cat I always thought I was too old to ever improve my pace and would forever run for fun and fitness instead (not that there's anything much wrong with that)

I eat constantly zombies it's pretty samey though, porridge with water cinnamon, nutmeg and maybe some fruit and flaxseed at about 7, a snack of a banana or a microwaved apple at 10am, an omelette that is actually a pan full of spinach and other veg just about held together by two beaten eggs (sometimes three Shock and grilled for lunch, rice cakes and almond butter at about 3:30, baked vegetables with feta or chickpeas or salmon in the evening, a yoghurt and a baked apple at about 10pm. Unless life intervenes and I find myself in a restaurant or at some gathering.

Mitchy1nge · 20/10/2014 11:13

oops forgot today's offering of 3 miles, making 591.7

usually have another run later on Mondays but not feeling it today

Pumble · 20/10/2014 12:35

Hi all. I've been following your thread but never posted. I was running between30-40miles a week before I fell over in July just before a race... I have been resting my ankle since then but I'm so fed up of not runnjng-it's really driving me crazy! Does anybody have any experience of how long ankle injuries take to recover? I know I shouldn't but I'm so tempted just to run anyway now!

Sorry to jump in and ask advice but thought you would be the best people to ask (and I'm not sure friends and family can cope with me going on about it much more!!!).

cinnamongreyhound · 20/10/2014 12:47

8min miles is a tough target to set zombiesheep but I totally get that you want to maintain your progress even if you don't improve on it! When I lost weight it was simply by calorie counting, I couldn't spend much time eating only grilled meat/fish and veg. I'd be miserable without bread, cake, chocolate so I eat everything just in moderation and reduced portion size. I think you have to find what suits you.

That's come round fast TessTackle!

If it's that bad then I personally would miss the race IrianofWay. See how you get on Tuesday but I hurt myself when someone got out of their car without looking when I was running past on the path. It was ok but uncomfortable, I pushed it the following week at training and could then barely walk. Took me a good while before I was back to running properly whereas if I'd rested it may have settled much quicker.

cinnamongreyhound · 20/10/2014 12:48

Sorry, hi Pumble! If it was the end of July and you still can't run I'd go and see someone as that's a long time to heal imo. I broke my foot 2 years ago and only had 8 weeks off!

Pumble · 20/10/2014 12:53

Thanks Cinnamon. Worse-it was the middle of July...

I'm just not sure if it's ok to go if there's the odd niggle or not? It's not painful-more a niggle at start of running....

GP first port of call?

cinnamongreyhound · 20/10/2014 12:57

If it's niggly is give it a mile and see personally. Plan a slow short run and see how you get on. GP's aren't great, sports physio better, but if it was broken at least gp could get you an x-Ray as see if its healed in the right place.

rb32 · 20/10/2014 13:28

12.7 on Sunday.....beautiful morning in the countryside, warm and windy, not raining and it was one of those runs that is just really really gorgeous.

IrianofWay - I think we all get these little niggles before big races!! If you're worried, leave it for a few days, go for a short easy 1 - 2 miler on thursday and see how it is.

rb32 · 20/10/2014 13:29

604.4 :)

TessTackle · 20/10/2014 13:38

Hi Pumble, welcome to the mad house!
I went over on my ankle not running at home, fell over a scooter a year ago, and it has only really stopped hurting recently.
I've been running since march with minimal issues.

Hasn't it, cinnamon?! I'm so excited! And the dress fits pretty much perfectly as per the fitting yesterday Grin
How are you feeling?

BlueChampagne · 20/10/2014 13:41

Pumble you're an epic runner! I agree with Cinnamon, try a short (very short by your standards I expect), and find a friendly physio over a GP. Good luck.

12.6 for me last week taking us to 617.

cinnamongreyhound · 20/10/2014 13:51

Great news on the dress, your hard work has paid off TessTackle!

TessTackle · 20/10/2014 14:04

Thanks cinnamon

feetheart · 20/10/2014 14:10

Mitchy - I only started running when I was 47. I'm now 52 (though not in my head :)) and this year my PBs have been falling steadily, partly because I've joined a running club, partly because I've been doing more races and partly because I am in hot pursuit of 8 yr old DS :) My parkrun PB has improved by nearly 3 minutes in the past 6 weeks alone Shock

Hello Pumble - give it a gentle go and see how it feels. My ankles and backside often ache when I start a run but seem to sort themselves out after a mile or so. If not definitely find a friendly local sports physio who are worth their weight in gold.

postmanpatscat - amazing fund-raising, well done you :)

Wimped out of a run yesterday as could only go late afternoon and opted to flake out on the sofa and then cook a curry instead :)
Club run tonight.

cinnamongreyhound · 20/10/2014 14:14

Sounds like you could be a monthly prize winner candidate then Feetheart Wink

Mitchy1nge · 20/10/2014 14:20

thanks feetheart more encouragment still! I hardly ever run with my club, the nights that would be helpful (when they do horrible things!) always clash with hot yoga and while I can pretty much squeeze in a run whenever, I try not to be out too many weekday evenings because it's a bit antisocial of me when I could do stuff with my daughter

plus horses etc, so much of our leisure time gets taken up by them Confused

but I bet if I substituted even just one hot yoga class for a club night a week, even a social run, I would feel the benefit

MirandaWest · 20/10/2014 14:25

Hello Smile. Ran 3.1 miles yesterday with DP and his friend - the friend goes rather faster than us (and dp was a bit faster than me). Felt like I was about to faint and/or be sick but at least I kept going and it was under 30 minutes. Smile

Total of 620.1

TessTackle · 20/10/2014 14:28

Well done Miranda I "run"at a snails pace, it's why I prefer to go alone.
