Thanks to a couple of birthdays pulses I'm now back on the sugar! But yes, I did 10 days without any added refined sugar. So fruit is fine, ice-cream, cake, sweetened yogurts etc not fine. I avoid any ready-made stuff with 'hidden' sugar in too like baked beans, supermarket tomato pasta sauces.

In theory you could pig out on fruit to get the sugar hit but in my experience I don't eat any more - 1 to 2 portions a day. I did avoid dried fruits though.

I find that once I'm not mindlessy picking I have a better diet anyway - so it helps with the no snacking business!

Raw nuts are brilliant. In theory they are hugely calorific but they are one of my main food groups these days and I have lost loads of fat and increased my muscle in the last few months, so I think they have a different effect on your body than say, biscuit calories. Very nutritious too.

thanks postman and Betsy
I think I'd really struggle to remove the hidden sugar. I'd also hate to give up dried fruit.
hmmmm.... will have to think about what I'd do and how....

Agree with you about nuts! I was also really relieved when I found out recently that they lower cholesterol! I have to keep an eye on mine (family history and pregnancy induced hypertension), so that was a really nice surprise.

(it was on this episode of Woman's Hour, in case anyone's interested:

This stuff is amazing for a nut protein fix, I discovered it out here so hopefully they sell it in the UK. It's delicious on apple slices! abc butter

postmanpatscat · 23/07/2014 15:04

pulses it's not easy when everyone around you is eating sugary stuff but it is possible. I don't even eat fruit any more! I usually have Greek yogurt with desiccated coconut for breakfast, it keeps me going til lunchtime. I still eat carbs, just avoid refined ones when possible. Low carb is near impossible as a vegetarian so I wouldn't bother to try. So for me it's no sweets, chocolate, cakes, biscuits, desserts, refined flour, dried fruit, fresh fruit, fruit juices/squash. I miss Costa hot chocolate and I've barely drunk anything but peppermint tea and water in almost six weeks, but I'm quite content to continue.

I was inspired by Sarah Wilson's I Quit Sugar but I'm not following her programme.

BetsyBell · 23/07/2014 16:48

In normal life I try and avoid added sugar on weekdays but allow it at weekends - not that I want it necessarily but it stops that craving for something you can't have. But I don't avoid dried fruit usually. A couple of times a year I try and take a full week or 2 off, especially if I notice my intake's been creeping up on weekdays.

Having been a massive sugar addict I have now found a balance that works for me and allows me to do interesting baking from time to time.

I avoid refined carbs most of the time too.

Except for right now; it's the end of term and I've come home with goodies from school. The kids or DH may end up eating most of it though - I don't enjoy it that much really anymore - feel a bit sick after a couple of low quality chocs.

vladthedisorganised · 23/07/2014 17:02

Hi everyone!

After a most embarrassing and painful run on Saturday (twisted ankle a mile into the long run, had to limp back while wearing shiny new HM t-shirt. I hope any runners felt sympathetic rather than 'what's that eejit doing in a half-marathon t-shirt?'); I've been taking it a bit easier.. so 20 minutes from yesterday and 30 minutes of boiling hot intervals just now.
94:40:58

Need to face getting up stupidly early in the morning - DH has to leave by 7am on weekdays..

Please, weather, give us light drizzle by September, eh?

Much respect to zombie for an amazing 5k time and to everyone else running in this heat!

HalleLouja · 23/07/2014 18:26

30 minutes yesterday makes 95:10:58.

BetsyBell · 23/07/2014 18:51

Right, we're now on school hols (I work in a school) WHOOPEE! However, this now means no option for a leisurely mid-morning run so I'm going to have to get my early morning mojo working so I can get out and back by the time DH needs to leave for work at 8. Not tomorrow as I'm currently drinking celebratory beer, but on Friday. Stating my intentions, which will make it happen I hope...

cinnamongreyhound · 24/07/2014 08:02

59 lovely minutes from me, already warm by 6.30 and too hot by then!! 96:09:58

Mornings are best BetsyBell and Vladthedisorganised! I'm usually back by 7 weekday mornings :) sorry to hear you hurt yourself!

Blatherskite · 24/07/2014 09:14

I was thinking of you lot last night. I was supposed to be doing Fartleks but my hip is still sore so I went for a quick-ish run instead - and stopped at exactly 30 minutes to make it easy to add on Grin

BetsyBell · 24/07/2014 09:49

I know I know cinnamon - used to get out at 6am last summer but I've not been waking till 7.20 recently. Kids must be being quieter or something! I'll have to ask DS2 to wake me up - I'm sure he's noodling quietly in his room from 6ish.

feetheart · 24/07/2014 22:13

I do love early morning runs though am trying to get used to evening running club times - haven't quite sorted out eating yet though! However I have just done my first speed session with the running club and LOVED it :)
Also, I finally got the results of the 5k I did a few weeks ago and I broke 30mins (29:45) for the first time ever :o It felt hard and horrible at the time but worth it now.
Happy runner here tonight :)

feetheart · 25/07/2014 06:38

Hopefully that makes the total 97:09:43

cinnamongreyhound · 25/07/2014 07:39

That's great feetheart, well done!

BetsyBell · 25/07/2014 08:33

Got out at 6.15! It wasn't a great run for me - I managed to get up the long hill without problem but then I just ran out of energy. Perhaps an early run after a gym workout the night before wasn't the ideal combination! Ah well, lesson learnt. Runkeeper spanged out on me and randomly added 4km so my data is not accurate but I'm rounding down the actual running time to 45minutes as I did a fair bit of walking on the return journey.

I think I'd eat a banana or something before bed next time I plan a long morning run. 5k would have been fine. Or just not accidentally end up pounding the crosstrainer the previous evening.

Wonder if the kids will notice if I sneak off for a nap now...

HalleLouja · 25/07/2014 08:42

Another half hour from me yesterday in the sweltering heat though I ran in the shade.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 25/07/2014 09:03

Have had to have a couple of breaks from running due to pulling a muscle in my foot. Have seen the podiatrist a couple of times and tried out some orthotics which seem to be helping.

Has anyone run with Hash House Harriers? We went along this week and joined in with a 7km run/walk in the heat (currently abroad). This morning I ventured out from our flat and managed a slow 4k.

Loving all thw foodie tips as I'm trying to keep to unrwfined carbs, but have let it slip since being away from home.

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 25/07/2014 10:29

New total is 99:34:43 after my long slow run this morning. Still very hot but it's either cooled down a bit or I'm getting used to it!
DS beaks up from school this afternoon so my running routine is totally out of the window!
Well done on the PB feetheart. Smile

HalleLouja · 25/07/2014 10:44

I am thinking of doing Hatfield House 10k on 5th October. Thought it might be a nice course to run round. Here

feetheart · 25/07/2014 10:52

HalleLouja - I'm tempted :)

HalleLouja · 25/07/2014 10:54

I am doing the Herts 10k the week after but this one looks better. Go on Feetheart you know you want to.

BlueChampagne · 25/07/2014 11:39

Another pre-breakfast longish run for me, so my weekly total is 2:17.56 taking our grand total to 101:58.09!

Grin at Blatherskite timing a run to make the maths easy!

Blatherskite · 25/07/2014 12:23

It's the way forward Blue, so much easier to add on :)

I'm supposed to be doing a 45 minute easy run tonight and am hoping it cools down. Wonder if I can make it exactly 45 minutes....

Blatherskite · 25/07/2014 18:27

Someone come and convince me that I want to do the club run on Sunday...

On the one hand - According to my HM training plan, I need to do a 1 hour 15 minutes LSD run (Long, Slow Distance) and I know that I am crap at making myself do any sort of distance so even though the club run is long (planned to be 1hr 30 and usually go at least slightly over) it's probably my best chance of actually getting out and making myself do it....

On the other hand - It's a trail/offroad run and I hate trail....

But - The WOLF run is coming up which is trail so the training would help there. I should cover 9 miles-ish on the club run and WOLF is only 10k. They've even said we should take road shoes if it's dry so it can't be that trail-y....

Or - I could go for a road run with a friend but would have to leave really early and would probably end up going long there too as she's planning 9 miles. Would be slower though...

What shall I do? Someone decide for me. My brain is too addled and the kids have only been on holidays for a week!

cinnamongreyhound · 25/07/2014 19:54

I'd go for the club run as I like trail but as you hate it go with your friend as long as she's not going to bail and lead to you not going :)
