Zombie I like these guys. I think the BUPA plans are supposed to be good as well. I am someone who needs a plan Grin

BetsyBell · 20/07/2014 17:58

Zombie I sprint in the park on grass. It's great fun and no real effort to add it on to the end of a run. 25mins is awesome! I used runkeeper on a 5k race for life today and it was actually 5.3k!

iwantgin · 20/07/2014 19:07

I did the Leeds 10K today.

I was slow. My slowest ever 10K. but it was bloody hot! and my longest run in recent months is 3 miles

Now feeling the love to really get serious about training and book in for anothe r10k soon.

iwantgin · 20/07/2014 19:07

Am envious of your 25 min 5K zombiesheep

cinnamongreyhound · 20/07/2014 20:00

Well done zombiesheep!! The easiest way is to add a mile a week onto one run and make that your long run. Lots of people use parkrun as their speed run without a specific plan.

5madthings · 20/07/2014 20:29

Evening, pulses glad you managed a run today, what time did you go? It was hot/muggy.

I did a 33min 5km today, interesting looking at split pace times, my first km is always my slowest, ad I warm up and then 2 and 3 are faster, 4 a bit slower and 5 is faster again basically because I am on the home straight!

Well done on the 25min 5km zombie that's fab.

ohoneohtwo and others with aches and pains hope you all feel better soon.

zombiesheep · 20/07/2014 21:24

Thank you everyone you're all so lovely :) :) :)

The plans look fab, gonna give it a go this week, 3 shorter runs and then one longer run at the weekend. And I will include some sprints somehow because I hate sprinting!!

Also for HIIT training, there is a footpath on a hill by my house, I usually run up it as a warm up. Could I sprint up that? Because then I could do it at the end of my run and it isn't that long (but long enough to run up iyswim).

I also wrote out a timetable for my exercise last week including lots of weights as I'm keen on building a bit of muscle, now I'm going to have to change it and include more runs!! Can't keep track of how much I want to do lol :o

Thanks for the help!

Knackerelli · 20/07/2014 22:12

Evening ladies! Wow zombie that's a fab time, am very envious! Have no times to add as volunteered at parkrun and been busy with family all weekend but wanted to pass on a code if anyone was interested. It's for 10% off at sweatshop and works on sale items too. It's LWSTN. Hope it helps someone!

SeymoreButts · 20/07/2014 22:19

Just popping on to ask does anyone have a GPS watch and what do you think of it? My phone died on a long run yesterday and I'm so annoyed because it was defo my longest run so far! The watches seem very pricey though.

sunflower49 · 20/07/2014 22:48

How are runners coping in this weather?I usually do 5k a day ish but I just can't do it!Turn into a panting mess and have to stop and walk. I haven't ran today because of the heat and I'm considering going now, instead because It's cooler now It's dark-bit nervous though will stick to well-lit streets obviously!

postmanpatscat · 21/07/2014 08:16

School hols at last, might actually fit some running in this week! Did a gentle 5k in the gym on Saturday as DP thought it might be cooler than outside, since the aircon is mediocre and there's no breeze in there, we're not convinced he was right. That's a measly 33 minutes to add from me in a whole week!!!

sunflower I can't cope with running in 25C and over, which is what it has consistenly been in London this week. The temp is barely dropping at all overnight. I've done lots of walking instead.

iwantgin · 21/07/2014 09:21

seymorebutts

I have a Garmin Forerunner 10 pink

It is pretty good once it finds the gps! I have had to send it back as I couldn't get it to pick up the satellites - even after re-setting.

Touch wood it seems okay now. I wouldn't have wanted to pay much more.

No HRM , but it has current pace - which is what I was after.

PulsesARagingEyesFullofWonder · 21/07/2014 09:35

Just to add to the list of people who are incredibly jealous of your 5K time zombie :) Good luck with extending the training.
I've done a few half marathons in the past on 3 or 4 runs a week, but with other stuff in between (swimming and cycling mostly, sometimes gym), so don't discount carrying on with other things if you enjoy them.

The key to my training when I used to get (relatively) decent times seemed to be a decent long run once per week (although I never used to go above 10 miles or so beforehand), and long reps for any "speed" work.

So I used to run to the seafront (I grew up by the sea) and then do 2 or 3 1-mile reps at a decent pace, with a minute or two rest in between. Or I'd do 4 or 5 800m reps. And when I did hill runs I'd find a loop with a long-ish hill and run up and round it however many times...

It is so hot out there. And I'm still dragging a lot of fat around with me everywhere right now, which isn't helping!
I ran at 9am yesterday 5madthings. It was actually okay, and we headed straight for the woods!
That was going to be my suggestion sunflower : just head for somewhere shady... but that's not a lot of help if you're in the middle of a city. We're fairly lucky here that there's lots of trees we can head for!

Hamstring is definitely not quite back to normal, but it's not hurting today after my run yesterday, so am hoping to head out for a shuffle round the block some time tomorrow....

feetheart · 21/07/2014 22:42

Slow 45mins from me tonight. Second time I've been out with the running club and it was a beautiful evening, had Sting's 'Fields of Gold' running through my head :) However I think I need to try a faster group as I didn't feel I got to stretch my legs tonight.
Going to try a speed session with them if I can get there on Thursday.

Zombie - well done you. That competitive edge is quite a revelation isn't it?

Ohone - are you doing Bedford parkrun on Saturday? I have passed the responsibility of taking DS to gymnastics to DH so I can do my second ever parkrun :)

Total 89:33:26 (I think!)

sunflower49 · 22/07/2014 00:27

I managed it today just running/jogging my usual route, wore shorts and a cooler vest than usual, instead of leggings and took it easy but it was HARD!I may go back to using the cross-trainer but I do prefer being outside. Also , I began a thread about year ago about my dog who I prefer to take with me but who hates running in any weather and in this weather I have no chance.

I went out last night, to run-LATE!About 11ish whenever I posted my last post on here, just did a few laps of the well-lit streets around here, would anyone say that's dangerous or not the thing to do?I liked it, but is it dangerous to run late at night?Really? With a big dog with you?I love running and it does keep me fit but in this weather I'm finding it so much harder!

Just read upthread, well done everyone!

SeymoreButts · 22/07/2014 01:54

thanks iwantgin I may have a look at a couple, but I'm also thinking about compression tights, not sure I can justify both!

MadMonkeys · 22/07/2014 06:51

I've been lurking for ages, time to delurk...

Sunflower I'm a 5k-three-times-a-week girl, but in this weather I'm missing more than the occasional run. It's just too hot, saps my strength and enthusiasm!

I've been running 5k for months now and always feel like I'm at the end of my endurance by the end. I've come to the conclusion that I just need to push it if I want to run further - no good waiting for the 5k runs to feel easier, it's just not going to happen! But I'm not pushing anything until the weather cools down a bit. I did c25k in the spring - anyone recommend a 5k+ programme?

emummy · 22/07/2014 08:47

Up to 90:05:58 after an early morning hilly run. Nice temp, didn't enjoy getting up early but it's the only way in the school holidays. MadMonkeys welcome! I gave up waiting for 5k to feel easier! One way to increase distance is just to add a little each week, so I remember doing 5.5 k then 6, taking a few weeks at each new distance or longer if one felt tougher. Good idea to wait till it gets cooler though!

HalleLouja · 22/07/2014 09:25

Another 50 minutes from Sunday 90:55:58. Am hoping to run tonight and on Thursday at my first run club meeting. Am ever so slightly nervous about attending......

cinnamongreyhound · 22/07/2014 22:01

I run evenings and mornings sunflower49 so it's not too bad but definitely tougher! Have heard you need to build up from shorter distances in the heat. I run in the forest in the winter with a head torch, although not as late as 11. I think dogs are a great deterrent but not a fix all, so I'm very aware of my surroundings.

I have a garmin 110 SeymoreButts and I get on very well with it. Does all I want and not too pricey but it was a gift!

Hi madMonkeys, I genuinely think to still feel ok at the end of 5k you will need to run further than 5k at least once a week. Second choice would be to take it slower than you are now or do a faster one so your current pace feels comfortable.

45 min hill session from me so 91:40:58 total.

SeymoreButts · 22/07/2014 23:14

40 min hill session from last night and 90 mins from Sunday

93:50:58

PulsesARagingEyesFullofWonder · 23/07/2014 09:33

Did 20 minutes yesterday, but can't really add it to the total, as it was more about getting hamstring used to running again than actually running.

I walked, stretched, shuffled, walked, stretched, shuffled, walked, stretched etc... but the main thing is that my leg feels fine today, and also the actual running felt fine, so I think as long as I build it up slowly enough that I don't re-injure myself, things'll be fine eventually.

Did someone talk about giving up sugar ages ago? I'm really interested in learning more about this....

PulsesARagingEyesFullofWonder · 23/07/2014 09:38

Ah. It was BetsyBell
Do you give up everything with sugar in? Or just refined sugar?
I need to do something!! I probably just need to give up snacking rather than all sugar, but I'm tempted by the cold turkey approach, as I'm a bit "all or nothing" in most things.

feetheart · 23/07/2014 10:10

Cold turkey is not easy as there is sugar in EVERYTHING

postmanpatscat · 23/07/2014 10:59

31 minutes from me yesterday morning. Will go out again later.

pulses it might have been me...I gave up sugar over five weeks ago. My original goal was to last until the end of term, but now I'm just carrying on as I prefer it and don't want to slip back into my old ways. There have been a few exceptions for special occasions, e.g. two slices of birthday cake and a dessert for a meal out for my friend's birthday (she insisted!)

In that time I've lost 6.5lbs and I feel so much better for overhauling my diet.
