For all running chat!

OP posts:

I too hate the heat for running (actually I hate hot weather in general). Cool, overcast, and slightly drizzly is my preferred running weather!

I have recently switched to evenings because it's cooler. I used to run in the mornings at weekends (NOT early though - as late as the DCs would allow me to wake up!). I prefer going in the evenings now because when I get home I can have a shower and then just sit and veg without feeling like I'm not being 'fun' enough for the kiddies!

Blatherskite · 17/07/2014 17:22

Hoorah! I actually have a proper training plan for my next half marathon! No more faffing about and then panicking a few days before the race, this time I have a proper, structured training plan written up for me by my physio :) He's even included 2 massage appointments in there :)

Bring on the sub 2 HM Grin

That felt so do-able at the end of Juneathon and so very scary right now! How did I get so unfit and unconfident in 2 and a half weeks?!

originalpiratematerial · 17/07/2014 19:05

78.51.02 with my 47 mins this morning. Did some more intervals - ran up the hill at Springfield four times - God I don't think I've ever sweated so much!

UmBongo · 17/07/2014 21:36

Hello all (Waves madly at cinnamongreyhound and HalleLouja)

I did the Race for Life 5k (just over 32 mins - chuffed to bits!) a few weeks ago and seem to be lacking in enthusiasm to get out running again so I thought I would check in here and you lot could all give me a kick out of the kitchen too near the crisps and back running.

HalleLouja · 18/07/2014 08:28

Umbongo hope all is well with you and the mini-five alives. [Kicks up arse].

I have decided today I am a runner. Not just someone who runs. As today I went running at just gone 7am so I could fit it in before it got too hot. Was still hot though.

So when did (if its happened yet) you realise you were a runner? Also planning birthday presents around running gear saddo emoticon.

I just ran for 30 minutes 79:21:02

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 18/07/2014 09:59

New total is 79:51:02 when I add on this morning's 30mins.

Halle, I think I realised I was a runner when I went to get my first pair of fitted running shoes. It seemed I had started taking it seriously at that point!

BlueChampagne · 18/07/2014 10:07

OK, when I said I couldn't run in the morning, I meant that I don't like to get up any earlier than I have to! However, needs must, so in order to get a decent run in today, I was out of the door at 6 and knocked off 7 miles before breakfast. And, with the help of a few jelly beans, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I may just do it again!

My weekly total is 3:40:07, bringing our total to 83:31:09

Great news Blatherskite - I want a crack at a sub-2 HM too! However, I'm glad I'm not training for anything specific in this weather.

emummy · 18/07/2014 10:19

84:03:50 after a 5 and a bit k fartlek session up hills, lovely morning here in frozen north, good luck to any down south planning a run in the heat, take it easy! Well done BlueChampagne, a very impressive early morning run!

BlueChampagne · 18/07/2014 10:23

Ah but it was riverside running - no contours were harmed during this run!

cinnamongreyhound · 18/07/2014 11:03

Weather forecast seems to be constantly changing for parkrun tomorrow, hoping it's not too hot! Well done everyone getting out, it's not as hot here yet as it was forecast.

UmBongo · 18/07/2014 13:43

Bluechampagne - was that your first morning run? I haven't dared yet - I used to find cycling first thing hard and felt a bit wobbly unless I had a big cooked breakfast. I think I am going to have to try.

ThursdayLast · 18/07/2014 19:12

Hi everyone, sorry I've been so rubbish!
I have running, just seem incapable of logging it for some reason. I hope you're all well.

I did my fastest ever parkrun last week (thanks to a different, flat course) a v slow 7.5 miles midweek and the Relucto-Dog and I just did about 3.5 miles. I will try and tot up my total later Smile

I'm excited to run my first competitive 10k in a month or so, and I'm still gagging about entering my local half. I'm certain that physically I can do it, it's just getting psychologically prepared IYSWIM?!

Also waiting for my annual pair of birthday Nikes to be delivered yay!

SeymoreButts · 19/07/2014 06:00

I just ran 5km in 25:10!! I really wanted to do a little victory dance but there were too people around. I've been ill for ages and on the point of pulling out of the first event I have ever entered so I'm feeling much more upbeat now!

Hooray for birthday trainers thursday!

Is gait analysis and proper shoe fitting a must? Maybe it is over longer distances?

halle I've only been running regularly in the Australian winter so far. When summer hits I will definitely have to work around the heat, maybe I'll feel more like a proper runner then. At the moment I can't run too early because I need to eat and have a cup of tea to get going first!

feet I downloaded the 30 day ab challenge app and threw in the towel on day 2. Blush

HalleLouja · 19/07/2014 08:52

Seymore well done you. I thought I needed to eat before running too but was ok. Was only 5k though. Not sure I would want to do any longer.

cinnamongreyhound · 19/07/2014 16:21

Well done SeymoreButts!! I didn't used to run early in the morning because of needing to eat but have found that I can by for upto 8miles without eating first just a glass of water :)

Well done ThursdayLast on your fast parkrun.

I did a new parkrun (to me) in 27:54 today so with SeymoreButts' 25:10 makes a total of 84:56:54

emummy · 20/07/2014 12:39

Great fun run through the woods in my new trail shoes this morning, so that takes us to 85:53:54. Was so much fun, I'm still smiling!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 20/07/2014 12:45

Sorry for my absence from the thread. I ran last weekend, but when I tried to download my garmin it told me that I needed to update my computer which took me into technology meltdown. I still haven't done the garmin, but I have 30:32 to offer from parkrun yesterday, taking us to 86:24:26 (I think)

feetheart · 20/07/2014 16:00

A hot slow plod from me this morning. Was actually quite pleased I managed over 4.5 miles as had a late and boozy night out with the girls last night Shock

PulsesARagingEyesFullofWonder · 20/07/2014 16:44

Really excited to be able to post here again!
(I joined the thread a couple of weeks ago, then did a park run and fell over just before the end. I took a large amount of skin off the area around my left knee, and have been struggling with pain, dressings and a dodgy hamstring ever since).

I've continued cycling, but have had to stop swimming as the "wound" is very much open still! I've also tried to shuffle out for a jog a couple of times, but had to stop as hamstring was sore.

But today, I went for a run with my friend, and ran/ walked for about 40 minutes.
We made sure we walked regularly (after every 5+ minutes of running), but I actually ended up completing my normal 3 mile route. So am pleased and relieved that I might be able to get back to it again slowly.

Taking it easy, but feeling a bit more positive.

I'll add 35 minutes to the total, as I mostly walked the last bit home before having a really really good stretch!

zombiesheep · 20/07/2014 17:14

Hi everyone. I've been on these threads before, but I don't post much although I always check how people are doing.

Would like a bit of advice/help please!

Today I ran the 5k race for life, I came first of the female runners and did it in 25 minutes. I came 5th in a run a few months back which was 7 miles long. I feel that finally, FINALLY I have found something I am good at and enjoy. I usually run over 6 miles every other day but sometimes I do lack the motivation to get up and run, sometimes I don't run out of pure laziness.

I know that I am not the best, especially on here there are people running marathons and half marathons and stuff (although I have actually applied to run the london marathon next year). However, after running the race for life today I feel I am capable and good enough to start training for half marathons and marathons and there is a little competitive streak in me I never knew I had, but where do I start? How do I train?

The running routes where I live are pretty shit to be honest, I can't see myself running for longer than maybe 7 miles because there is genuinely no where to run. How do I start? Does anyone have any advice? I am 20 and have a very good level of fitness, I can't believe how fit I have become. Is it just a case of plodding on to ramp up the mileage?

Excuse the shameless boasts, just feeling proud of myself! Also does anyone know where the nearest half marathon is in Essex? I live near Colchester!

Thanks! :)

BetsyBell · 20/07/2014 17:21

33 mins today

So with Zombie's amazing 25min 5k I make the total

88:48:26

Zombie I've been trying to level up from 5ks to 10ks and it's going well - I add sprints to the end of my shorter runs - HIIT activities which increase fitness quickly and effectively. So I do the 3-5k run, stretch then do up to 4 30 second sprints with recovery time in between. The 30 seconds is arbitrary, you just run as fast as you can for as long as you can and stop when when you can't go at full pelt anymore, take a moment to recover then repeat.

BetsyBell · 20/07/2014 17:26

( Zombie - I realise that you are way ahead of the running/fitness game compared to me but the HIIT could be the key for you to increase your milage)

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 20/07/2014 17:39

Zombie you sound pretty good to me!

There are lots of HM/Marathon training plans on the internet - most have you running 4 x a week and a mixture of speed, endurance, short and long runs. Some are by distance, and others are by time (a friend is following a time-based plan, which I haven't come across before). Some include cross-training e.g. cycling, swimming. The trick is to find one that works for you and your lifestyle - if you can only do long runs on Sundays, you don't want a plan with a long run mid-week.

Blathers would you mind PM'ing me your physio's details? I think I need to go and see someone - am tired of this constant pain. I have self-diagnosed but think I need a professional opinion but don't want to be told to stop running You will get your fitness and confidence back - as I keep telling DH, I can't believe I was marathon training this time last year!

zombiesheep · 20/07/2014 17:40

Betsy do you sprint on grass or on pavement? HIIT sounds ideal really but I am just so lazy! I will take that advice though, although do you reckon I could add it on to maybe my 6 mile run? Sometimes I alternate between 5k and 10k depending on how tired I am!
Thank you for being impressed! It feels so surreal for people to actually be impressed with what I do, my mum was so proud of me today it just feels strange because I'm hopeless at everything :o and thanks for your advice :)

zombiesheep · 20/07/2014 17:43

Thank you OhOne I will look some up! 4 days a week sounds doable too, as you say I could leave a longer run till the last day. Getting excited now!
