For all running chat!

OP posts:
zonedout · 14/07/2014 23:14

Thank you cinammon and chinamoon

Yes, that does make sense. I have no idea how to go about sprint training, I guess google is my friend.

How about things like swimming or Pilates on non running days? Do you think they add anything to the ability to run/finish a half in a vaguely respectable time?

All I did ahead of the 10k was run 3 times a week - one 10k and two slightly shorter but my speed has stayed the same for a while, and I guess will do (as will my stamina) without some drastic action.

feetheart · 15/07/2014 06:49

Hello zoned. I have done two half marathons on 3 days training a week using Kara Goucher's plan from her 'Running for Women' book and will probably be using it again for the half I am doing at the end of October. I didn't do anything else as I just couldn't fit it in. I think anything extra will help but don't do anything too drastic or you will end up injured.

Well, I did it, I went to a running club last night and loved it :)
There is one close to home that I have been thinking about going to for AGES but I have never run in the evening and wasn't sure how to manage it. After Sunday's race where everybody seemed to know each other and I knew no-one I decided now was the time. I did a gentle 4 miles with a very friendly group - the first time in 5 years running that I have ever run with anyone else outside a race Shock I'm as stiff as buggery this morning though and will need to work out how and when to eat as although I was hungry afterwards it was 9pm and too late to eat much. Tempted to go again on Thursday though logistically that's a much harder night to manage.

I can add 45 mins to the total - 62:10:51

karatekimmi · 15/07/2014 07:01

Well done feet I'm glad you enjoyed it!! I love my running club and have made so many friends through it.
I think peoples perception of running clubs (hard core, training till you vomit, racing all the time, people being too slow) is very very different from actual clubs!! its just people who get together and run.

cinnamongreyhound · 15/07/2014 07:33

That's great feetheart I love my club!

Sorry zoned out I didn't answer your question! If you can run three times a week you'll be fine for a hm in October. I generally didn't do more than 6 miles on my two week days runs, did a parkrun Saturday for a bit of speed and then long run Sunday. I didn't follow a plan but was aiming to increase by 2 miles each fortnight, so this Sunday I'd do 8 miles after your 10k and repeat the following week and then 10 and repeat (although I did stick at 10 for three weeks) then 12 for 2 and then only 6 the week before the hm but that's very roughly based on what I know others do and no where near a proper plan that will have you doing all sorts of different tempos. Which hm are you thinking of entering?

BeyondBurma · 15/07/2014 08:42

Cinnamon yes well remembered it was me that did the British 10k on Sunday in London (not Norfolk Grin)!

Zonedout that's a great time! It was only my second race and I did it in 1 hour 3 mins (sure there is a cooler running way of writing the times down!). It was an absolutely amazing experience but oh boy was I tired yesterday - more from getting up so early and all the adrenalin and excitement. I'm in my late 40's btw.

Funnily enough I've also signed up for a half marathon in September argh!!! I do have time to train and am following Running Made Easy by Susie Whalley. Am very nervous as it's double the distance I've ever done but will try it and see what happens Smile.

You and I sound very similar - I only started running properly at the end of March!

Lovely supportive thread this - I wouldn't even attempt to try and add my few miles on though as maths def not my strong point Blush.

emummy · 15/07/2014 12:51

Hi all, been on holiday with no phone reception, returning to civilisation now so can add my 3 runs taking total to 64:08:50. originappiratematerial I wear 1000 mile socks, very good, very rarely get sweaty feet!

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 15/07/2014 15:18

Another 5k this lunchtime of 29:22 which brings us to 64:38:12, providing I've added that on correctly.

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 15/07/2014 15:35

5K hill training to add to the total so 65:09:12.
Long slow run tomorrow. Am hoping for cooler weather than today

vladthedisorganised · 15/07/2014 15:37

A very, very hot 35 minutes of intervals today, after stinging my legs to oblivion on a "footpath" full of nettles - ouch! Once I was on a decent path I managed about six sprint intervals before collapsing into a jog. Not really on form after no running last week (work insane, then away for the weekend) and giving blood yesterday.
65:13:12?

originalpiratematerial I love my Decathlon socks!

vladthedisorganised · 15/07/2014 15:38

Sorry Cardiff, x-post! 65.44.12 it is..

Morrigu · 15/07/2014 15:50

Oh my I've missed so much in a couple of days.

Fantastic times for all of you cinnamon, chinamoon and zonedout and beyondburma :) (did I get everyone?)

I'm glad you enjoyed your running club feetheart. I'm thinking about getting a babysitter and joining one of our local ones.

zonedout I'm 35 and only started doing couch to 5k in Feb. I'm doing my first hm in Sept if it all goes according to plan of course Grin I also do 3 runs a week and have made up my own plan by adding 1km and then 1 mile onto my long run. Parkrun 5k is the fast one and another one during the week could be a 6k/hill repeats/sprints - just whatever I feel like. I haven't done any more than a near 11 miles so far and have hung around the 6-9mile mark the last few weeks as I've cut back on running due to hip problems. My aim is to just get round the hm in the 3 hours allocated though. Next year maybe I'll think about a time and do a proper plan.

Soo after a week off and a weekend of excess I finally laced up the trainers and did 10miles. Wasn't the easiest in the world but it's done now. My hip hurt like buggery though, much more than last time and I was thanking my lucky stars every time I was able to stop at a traffic light for a little stretch. My own fault as I've been pure lazy and haven't done my stretches since Thursday. Will be getting a blast tonight along with the roller and getting stuck into them every day again now. It would be a bad idea to take ibuprofen before a hm right? (I do know the answer to this but need someone to tell me it is Grin) 1:40:50 I think takes it to 65:49:40 correct me if I'm wrong.

Morrigu · 15/07/2014 15:55

eep xpost 67:25:02??? You have no idea how taxing my brain found that addition

cinnamongreyhound · 15/07/2014 16:24

I have a friend who has calves that cramp up around 7 miles so always takes ibuprofen before a long race Morrigu so I'd say it's fine.

I'm doing some kind of intervals tonight, my friend who I run with is getting a bit down that she's getting slower so I said we could do some proper training. Personally I'm happy to just run but I thought it was the right thing to do :)

Morrigu · 15/07/2014 17:30

Oh that's interesting cinnamon everything I've read has said a big fat no. Think it was something to do with pressure on the kidneys or something. Saying that the way I used to party in my 20s the affect of a couple of ibuprofen on my liver or kidneys or whatever is the least of my worries Grin Enjoy your intervals tonight.

originalpiratematerial · 15/07/2014 18:00

68.09.02 with my 34 mins this morning. I did intervals and even sort of enjoyed them. I went out on the Marshes so I could run on the grass - it was glorious

originalpiratematerial · 15/07/2014 18:02

morrigu I've also read that it's not good to take ibuprofen before a race although it's fine to take it afterwards to help reduce inflammation. I am no medic though. Whenever you take it, never do on an empty stomach, that's really important.

originalpiratematerial · 15/07/2014 18:04

Thank you so much for the sock suggestions! Am reading the thread in the wrong order, bear with me!

cinnamongreyhound · 15/07/2014 20:27

We did a session designed by my friends husband so did 5min warm up, 3min effort which we did at 7 min miling, 2 min recovery which was walking repeated 5 times then 5 min cool down and I then than home with her and back to mine so a total of 1:01 but 10 mins of that we're walking so I'll add 51 mins. Total 60:00:02

5madthings · 15/07/2014 20:53

I did Sprint training the other day but up hills.,,

35 mins from me today and I really enjoyed it :) a reasonable 5.5km. My fastest pace was 5 min km and slowest just over 7mins a km interesting to see the variation on mapmyrun.

5madthings · 15/07/2014 20:55

So 60.35.02

BetsyBell · 15/07/2014 21:45

23mins of jogging and sprints from me tonight

60:58:02

BetsyBell · 15/07/2014 21:49

Hang on, what's happened there

Erp - 68:09:02 plus cinnamon's 51 is 69:00:02, plus 5's 35 + 69:35:02 + my 23

69:58:02

cinnamongreyhound · 15/07/2014 22:02

What happened was I somehow managed to hit a 0 instead of a 9 Blush

zonedout · 15/07/2014 22:23

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome and all of the replies Smile

beyondburma I was also exhausted yesterday and, even though I'm very used to running 10k these days, my legs were very sore. I agree, it was an amazing experience (and I've already told the charity i ran for to sign me up for next year Grin)

Have you gone beyond the 10k and started your HM training yet? You are doing unbelievably well, to have only started in late March - my inspiration! (Oh and one further similarity is that I can't add up to save my life Blush)

Although I said I can run 3 times a week, I somehow forgot that it was the school holidays and I will have to cram in most of my runs when my boys go to their Dad (I'm a single mum.) So some weeks I won't be able to do anything and others maybe 4 or 5 training sessions - erratic at best!

Morrigu it sounds like you are doing brilliantly too (although a comparative youngster!) I think you are right about the just getting round it and improving on speed in the future. I mean, just to complete a HM is an incredible achievement in my book!

cinammongreyhound thank you, that makes perfect sense. I am actually signed up (eek!) to the royal parks half marathon - a moment of total madness.

originalpiratematerial · 15/07/2014 22:34

Morrigu I'm sorry to read that your hip hurt so much again Sad. Is there any chance you can have more physio? i'm had mine treated twice now and i've also been doing loads of stretches and using the foam roller and I think I'm back on the right track now.
