That's brilliant Chinamoon well done! I did the British 10k London Race today and that was only my second race ever and I'm rapidly approaching 50 so hats off to us Grin!

chinamoon · 13/07/2014 18:09

Thanks BeyondBurma. It's a great feeling isn't it? Well done you too. Where did you run in London?

Feetheart - that's v good. My only 5k was a parkrun not a race and not many people came in under 30!

cinnamongreyhound · 13/07/2014 19:46

Well done feetheart!!!

Fab time Chinamoon, I'm 33 and I only started running 2 years ago. Feel like I've been missing out all my life!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 13/07/2014 19:56

Well done cinnamon, brilliant time for your 10K Grin

pirate A tip I got from another thread was to put vaseline on my feet to prevent blisters, and it works for me. Don't tell DH, but once when I arrived at a race (in Cambridge cinnamon Wink) I had forgotten the vaseline, but found a chapstick DH leaves in the car which did the job just as well on my toes and bra-line.

feet was it you asking about one of the Bedford Harriers 5K races? I'm not planning to do it because it's the same route as parkun, but let me know if you decide to come and I will come and cheer you on Smile

Tested out new shoes today - I like! I have a varicose vein so thought it was time I got some compression socks rather than using a tubigrip so I'm not compressing one calf muscle whilst compressing the vein. Anyway, they're great but sweaty so I might wear a pair of cotton socks underneath.

Anyone else wear compression socks? Any advice or recommendations?

33mins to add

Arse, on wrong page again

59:18:47 (I think)

YAY to new runners loving it and great times. I really didn't feel like a run today but it was planned and I did it and of course loved it. Grin

Blatherskite · 13/07/2014 21:54

Who me CardiffUniversityNetballTeam?

Erm, in a word, Yes. We did the 2.5 hour drive to Bristol this weekend to join someone we knew doing their 50th parkrun. Grin

Fab 10k time cinnamon. Well done

postmanpatscat · 13/07/2014 23:02

Some great achievements on here, as always!

I did my first run in almost a week yesterday, 6km along the cliff at Bournemouth, down the steps to Boscombe Pier, along the seafront to Bournemouth Pier, back to the Eastcliff zigzag path and I even ran up 3/4 of that!! We were away for DP's 50th and had a fabulous time. So, fogot my Garmin but I think it was about 35 minutes.

originalpiratematerial · 13/07/2014 23:11

60:13:47 with my leisurely 55 min run this afternoon. Blimey it was so hot and humid, I could not believe how heavy my running kit felt when I took it off.

originalpiratematerial · 13/07/2014 23:13

Well done chinamoon, feetheart and Burma! I will be 50 next year and didn't start running until I was nearly 48, I too wish I'd known what I was missing out on!

originalpiratematerial · 13/07/2014 23:15

On the subject of blisters - this afternoon I soaked my feet in cold water, dried them really carefully and then put anti-fungal powder on - it seemed to help a lot. I guess that's almost the polar opposite to putting vaseline on them though Confused. Anyway i was pleased it seemed to work - five miles in really warm weather in new shoes and nary a blistered toe in sight (I only get blisters on the tips of my toes ever).

MazzR · 14/07/2014 07:18

60:53:51 from me this morning. Found it hard today even though it was the same route as usual. Maybe because I went for a cycle yesterday for the first time in a year or so?? Thighs were aching a bit. Well done everyone who did races this weekend, or any run in the heat!!

feetheart · 14/07/2014 11:59

Another one who only started running in her late 40s, did my first half marathon at 50 and the GNR last year at 51.
The joy of starting running later in life is that I am still clocking up regular PBs :)
Still no word on yesterday's race

Ohone - it was me that mentioned the Bedford 5k. I don't get the chance to do parkrun usually so am tempted but haven't parted with cash yet. Support would be great though I do have to warn you that Im not a pretty sight at the end of a race and have a tendency to throw up Shock Lots of bushes in Bedford park though!

standingonlego · 14/07/2014 13:19

I just popped in to share my excitement - I've just bought some new running shoes Grin. Saucony Omni 13s

standingonlego · 14/07/2014 13:26

This will be my 5th pair of Omnis but making a jump from version 9 x3 (had pink, green then blue) to Version 13 - they are SO much lighter. Hope I get on ok, lots of shoe trouble on the thread at the moment :(

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 14/07/2014 13:58

Haven't run since last Tuesday so just did an easy paced 5k this morning. Took me 32 mins, so that brings us to 61:25:51 if I've added it up right.

cinnamongreyhound · 14/07/2014 14:42

That's just mean OhOneOhTwoOhThree, your poor dh Wink

Nice trainers standingonlego!

The body is a strange thing, I was aching pretty much everywhere Saturday after parkrun but yesterday I felt ok before the race and fine today! I was trying to keep hydrated and wonder if lots of water helped with it?

zonedout · 14/07/2014 21:26

Hello, I wonder of I may join?

I ran my first ever race yesterday, the British 10k London Road race - finished in 57.36 - and loved every second! I've just turned 40 & only started running this February. I really enjoy a 10k run but really do feel it's currently my limit and wonder whether I could have some advice from you experienced runners - what do you think my chances of making a half marathon in October are? My main concern is I don't have a huge amount of time to train so wonder if it's just a crazy idea for this year... Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

zonedout · 14/07/2014 21:28

Oh and cinnamongreyhound, I see our paths may have crossed!

cinnamongreyhound · 14/07/2014 21:32

Oh really? I'm intrigued now!

zonedout · 14/07/2014 21:48

I mean, just because we had similar times in the 10k yesterday. Unless I'm getting confused and it wasn't you who wrote that? And of course we may have started at very different times in which case we wouldn't have run anywhere near each other... Oh just ignore me, I'm starting to confuse even myself!

cinnamongreyhound · 14/07/2014 21:52

Ah I see! I thought I'd seen you somewhere without knowing. It was BeyondBurma who was in London I was running 10k in a little village in Norfolk Grin

zonedout · 14/07/2014 22:02

Oh, sorry! Now I realise why I so rarely join these threads!!!

cinnamongreyhound · 14/07/2014 22:08

Don't be sorry! You're very welcome here! Would have been cool of we'd passed each other and then chatted here :)

chinamoon · 14/07/2014 23:01

Zoned that's a very respectable time for 10k on a first ever race. I'm sure you could definitely get ready for a half marathon by October, but it would be hard if you don't have much time to train. One thing I've been trying is sprint training - not to speed up on longer runs but because it gives you better cardio fitness for the long runs, if that makes sense. And it doesn't take as much time out of your day.
