For all running chat!

OP posts:
thefemaleJoshLyman · 12/07/2014 09:51

Meant to say, I have Brooks Dynamic and they are ace.

cinnamongreyhound · 12/07/2014 11:33

54:35:52 with my parkrun this morning. I'm seizing up now, not sure how my 10k tomorrow will go!

thefemaleJoshLyman · 12/07/2014 12:27

Oh no, hope you don't get too stiff cinnamon.

Good job I'm not a trainer salesperson, my trainers are Brooks defyance 7.

originalpiratematerial · 12/07/2014 12:28

Well, I spent as much of yesterday evening as I could stretching and using the foam roller and it seems to have paid off as I did parkrun pain-free this morning (although was a little stiff straight afterwards). I didn't attempt to run fast though - was just really pleased to be running at all. 32 mins so that's 55.07.52.

Morrigu · 12/07/2014 16:21

Brilliant pirate.

No running today. Was a dirty stop out - only home an hour ago Grin and nursing a bit of a hangover. Think I've managed to talk a friend into coming out with me tomorrow though.

Brooks here too. The adrenaline gts ones. I love the bright colours of the saucony trainers I've seen online but nowhere here seems to stock them.

originalpiratematerial · 12/07/2014 17:05

I have the Brooks Adrenalin ones too. I find them quite hot and sweaty in this weather though - but perhaps all trainers are hot and sweaty when it's, er, hot??

Fishandjam · 12/07/2014 19:10

Hi all. Been AWOL for a bit - have been feeling really rough (possibly anaemia) but managed a holiday parkrun at Lanhydrock this morning. Nearly killed me! I'm not used to hills Grin Forgot my barcode so no official time, but I think it was about 40 mins. Far too knackered and full of Cornish fish and chips now to do accurate maths but I think that makes it 55.08.32?

cinnamongreyhound · 12/07/2014 19:16

Thanks TheFemaleJoshLyman, I've got some doms going on but not as stiff! Canicross isn't hardwork if you've got dogs who love it and run and listen to direction changes and slow down (the most difficult thing) to your pace.

That would be 40seconds fishandjam, the 55 is hrs, then mins then secs. We'd have run a long time if it was 55 days Grin total is 55:47:52 with your 40 mins :)

Fishandjam · 12/07/2014 20:28

Oops Blush

monsterowl · 12/07/2014 21:39

Now done 20k in my new, brooks glycerin and they rub :( Wondering whether to persevere for a bit or exchange them as the shop where I got them lets you exchange them within 30 days if you don't get on with them. Planning another run on Tuesday so might leave it till after that to make a decision ...

originalpiratematerial · 12/07/2014 21:49

Question about increasing distances - in the week before my hip became very sore, I had just started my HM training and I did about 16 miles. Then I had a week of doing virtually nothing. Now I've done six miles in the last couple of days. What do I do about increasing my mileage again? How doe s the 10% rule apply? Do I do 16 miles this week? More? Less?

monsterowl - what a PITA Sad. I must say when I've bought running shoes that I've been able to try on first and test on the treadmill I've never had any rubs at all - they've been comfortable for 5 - 6 miles right from the outset. So if the shop really will change them for you even after you've run in them, I would be tempted to go for that.

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 12/07/2014 22:07

Hey owl. I too have not experienced any rubbing from running shoes I've had fitted. Are you wearing proper socks with them? If you are I would take them back to the shop, to ask for advice if nothing else.
Pirate, I don't know, a greater expert than me will surely be along soon with sound advice. Although I'm sure it is best to err on the side of caution when running back from injury.

I haven't had a chance to try out my new clothes yet. DP went to play golf earlier and appears to have forgotten his way back from the clubhouse. Hmm
However, I have signed up for Windsor women's 10K and next year's Reading half marathon!! Shock Time to step away from the chocolate biscuits and take this running malarkey seriously.

SeymoreButts · 13/07/2014 04:53

Yay Cardiff! When's the 10k? Surely training for a half requires more not less chocolate??

Cinnamon I think you are right. I'm still suffering from a bug, I went out today and managed 8km but my chest was hurting. I don't think I can make 14km less than a month from now! Hopefully I can get my money back.

56:27:52

BetsyBell · 13/07/2014 07:29

Great to hear so many wear Brooks. I Haven't yet tested mine out on a run but have a session planned this evening so will report back on my Ghost 7 later Smile

Fishandjam · 13/07/2014 08:17

Saucony Hurricanes here. I overpronate a bit and they're fab for correcting that.

originalpiratematerial · 13/07/2014 08:24

Me again, still fretting about how much I can run this week.

Basically I've only got seven weeks until half-marathon so if I am to have any chance of doing it I need to crack on. So Im going to do Week 3 of the RW HM plan this week, and if that goes ok I will carry on, if by this time next week I'm struggling again then I may have to accept that it's not to be!

Interestingly, RW has some suggestions for things to do after workouts to strength gluteus medius (which I think is what's giving me problems) - clams, side planks & leg raises so I'm going to do some of those as well.

karatekimmi · 13/07/2014 08:30

I have new balance ones and nike free's which I alternate. Need to order some new ones soon!!

1 hour 47 min 9 mile run on Friday night and 34.47 parkrun on Saturday which makes us ...

58: 48 :39 I think!!

cinnamongreyhound · 13/07/2014 08:40

Where do they rub monsterowl? Did they slip when you ran in them in the shop? When I had my nike ones I had to lace them differently as they were quite open around the ankle compared to what is has before and that worked a treat. Also what kind of terrain and was it dry? I almost always get blisters on long distances if my shoes get wet and have a spot under my arch on my trails that run if it's very uneven.

We're you doing 16 miles total in the week originalpiratematerial or was that your long run? I'm assuming weekly total. I think the 10% is added to your long run not your total but I could be wrong. I think you need to listen to your body and if your hip is struggling then that's probably enough. A week off won't put you back loads so if you feel up to it do 16 this week and increase from next I would say.

I don't think you'll get your money back SeymoreButts, if you still have the bug then you'll struggle but once it's gone you should be able to get back into it. 8k while still ill sounds pretty promising for when you're not ill. Don't make any decisions for another week or so.

originalpiratematerial · 13/07/2014 10:14

That was the total for the week, cinnamon. Yes, I will listen to my hip!

Talking of blisters - I find my feet get really sweaty and I think running on consecutive days doesn't help as shoes don't really get chance to dry out. This leads to blisters. Any suggestions for the best socks for wicking away sweat? I have Balega socks which are awesome in cooler weather but really don't seem to be helping much atm.

monsterowl · 13/07/2014 11:49

Thanks cinnamon ... the left one rubs at the back, where the top of the shoe touches my leg, and I have a blister there. Also, for some reason, on both feet my big toe rubs against the next toe, and I have a blister at the tip of the second toe on the right foot. Have experimented with looser vs tighter lacing. Terrain was tarmac, but country roads so parts of the tarmac not that well-maintained, and it was dry. Almost feels as if the shoes don't fit properly, which is annoying because I had a gait analysis and proper fitting and advice, and tried them out on the treadmill in the shop before buying - although admittedly only for a minute, which doesn't compare to a full outing. Will take them back to the shop tomorrow and see what they say ... I have 30 days to decide whether to exchange them but they have a sale on at the moment so don't want to risk not being able to exchange for something affordable (I have to pay the difference if I exchange for something more expensive).

Annoying .. I chose the Brooks Glycerin partly because they seemed comfortable and partly because they were such a good deal (half price at £60). I also really liked Saucony Ride 6, but they were £80 (reduced from £100). Should probably have gone for those!

cinnamongreyhound · 13/07/2014 13:46

It sounds like you could with half a size bigger for the toe thing monsterowl. With running at the heel? If I understood that right, apparently brooks have made their trainers quite low and it may not suit you try lacing with the loops like this

Did my 10k in 57:08, felt awful through a lot of it but still a good time! My clu mate got 2nd lady and a friend from parkrun came second overall, he's well chuffed! Total 58:45:47

originalpiratematerial · 13/07/2014 15:25

great time cinnamon!

chinamoon · 13/07/2014 15:36

That's a brilliant time Cinnamon. Wow. Respect.

I'm feeling v happy. Just did my first ever race in my life today, and I'm 50!

Started running with the C25K plan last November, so been running for about 9 months. 5 miles (8k) in 54.37 mins today. That's 10 mins less than I estimated. Really really pleased. And lovely DH, DC and my best mate were there at the finish line. Lovely!

I love running. For 50 years I hated it with a passion. Now I love it with even more passion Grin

monsterowl · 13/07/2014 15:36

Congrats on your time cinnamon! And thanks for the lacing tip - it had never occurred to me that the lacing pattern might make a difference. I think, if anything, the shoes might be slightly too big. The lady in the shop advised a larger size than I would have bought. I've only been out twice in them (running approx 10k each time, two days in a row) and the first time I felt like maybe the right one was laced too loosely, so I tightened it the next time. I guess it's possible that it rubbed the first time because it was too loose, and then rubbed the second time because my foot was already a bit sore ... I think I'll give them one more outing on Tuesday then take them back for an exchange on Wednesday if I still have problems.

feetheart · 13/07/2014 17:52

Did a 5k race this morning and according to their timing I may have broken 30mins although according to my watch it was 31:04!! Am waiting very impatiently for the official results. Am going to test my stopwatch and see what's going on as it seems to work OK as a watch. Might be time to upgrade from a £4.99 market watch :)

Was hard going and I went too hard to the start so felt like dying at the end but I feel good now (6 hours later :))
