25 mins from me, and a sore knee again. I think I am going to have to give in and go for a gait analysis for the sake of my knee!

Hello you lot Grin Been on an extended MN break and it's nice to see the running threads are still ...erm... running! I'm under a new guise but recognise some names.

Myself and an MNer named Twink started the first running threads back in 2004. My knees are just about holding up 10 years later!

7k today. With a big hill.

originalpiratematerial · 08/07/2014 21:08

SeymoreButts I read somewhere (RW I think) that coffee before a run is really helpful. Certainly I find it so. On the subject of armbands, I have a Tunebelt one and it's quite comfortable.

I had pretty much given up sugar BUT since hip went doolally on Friday, I have been stuffing myself with bad food, including sugary crap, so I'm going to have to go through the withdrawal bit again Hmm - so effing stupid.

TheIncidentalGoat - I'm sure I know you...I certainly remember Twink!

I had a sports massage yesterday - very tight in all the muscles around the hip, and a massive horrible knot in my glute, and really tight all down the front of the quads as well - I felt exhausted afterwards [tiny violin] but unfortunately my hip is still a bit achey. So I cancelled my gym workout today. I have an absolutely awful day in prospect at work tomorrow Hmm and no chance of going for a run and I'm Wine tomorrow evening to deaden the pain, but will try a gentle run on Thursday and see how I get on.

Sorry - really moany post! Blathers I'm glad your leg is feeling a bit better. Morrigu that sounds like a good run!

originalpiratematerial · 08/07/2014 21:12

Sirzy - sympathies - where are you going to get gait analysis done? I think I need it, and something a bit more than just going to Runnersneed!

Sirzy · 08/07/2014 21:23

Hello incidental

Original I will probably go to the running shop in Southport they are supposed to be very good

TheIncidentalGoat · 08/07/2014 21:34

Oh you know me Wink

I think about Twink quite often. She disappeared from here after she lost her dh.

BetsyBell · 08/07/2014 21:47

Sirzy I'm doing the same tomorrow for an emerging hip problem that isn't quite going away. It's mainly caused by twisting kicks in Tae Kwon Do (now stopped doing them) but aggravated by running more than 5k. I'm hoping that my old knackered trainers are part of the problem and that fabulous, shiny new ones, correctly aligned for me will sort it.

I've given up sugar (and booze) for a bit - I do it a couple of times a year to stop the crazed sugar addiction I'm prone to creeping up on me! On day 3 and doing well.

Sirzy · 08/07/2014 21:54

I have the same sugar addiction, and a carb one. trying to get back on track with controlling it and failing badly

Good luck!

I do 5:2 fasting too which has done wonders for carb/sugar addiction, but I have to add a bit of cold turkey here and there just to keep everything in check when I realise I'm eating sugary shite 5 days a week.

originalpiratematerial · 08/07/2014 22:12

I didn't know that, IncidentalGoat - that's sad.

Ten years, eh Shock.

TessTackle · 09/07/2014 12:48

Oh guys I'm so shit! Set my alarm for 7 to be out of house by 7.30 to run as long as far as I can... And slept until 10 Blush

Did 30 day shred instead and will try to get out tonight/tomorrow.

5madthings · 09/07/2014 14:09

Wow jealous of your lie in tess

No running here today but I did go to the pool and swam for 70 mins, did about 80 lengths, I suspect I may feel it ttomorrow as I haven't been swimming for months! It was so good though! I am going to go each Wed when madthing5 is at pre school :)

Blatherskite · 09/07/2014 14:42

I managed a tentative 3.5 miles this lunchtime - on the physio's advice before I get told off again! My hip is still very sore and was uncomfortable the whole way round but it's certainly better than it was.

Resting it now before the weekend's parkrun as it's supposed to be a hilly one.

BetsyBell · 09/07/2014 16:37

I can't even remember what sleeping till 10 is tess!

I've got new shoes! I've been running in clapped out old trainers for a while and thought it was high time I got proper kit. I'm usually a bit allergic to spending the bucks but my emerging dodgy hip has convinced me otherwise...

I have some Brooks Ghost 7, if that means anything to anyone, and very nice they are too Grin I have discovered I am neutral in gait and my running is a bit bouncy. It's true, I set off like a labrador puppy on a good day! I had to give up on the running machine and run around the shop instead - I always run outdoors and treadmills just feel very odd.

FreeButtonBee · 09/07/2014 17:11

Managed 4k today in 21 mins. Not awful but definitely room for improvement. Aim for the next few weeks is to get up to 5k over the next two weeks and then speed up. Then I will think of my next challange,

had a nice run around the City today - along the river and past st pauls. I often go north into islington as it is quieter but fun to amble about in the sunshine and tourists a bit and feel like a proper londoner. After practically being under house arrest last year with twins, I am still inordinately happy to get out and about without children in tow!

TheIncidentalGoat · 09/07/2014 19:02

I'm currently wearing Brooks Betsy. Have been a lifelong Asics wearer but the offer on these was too good to be true and they've been fine.

Rest day for me today. I run 3 or 4 times a week, any more and bits of me start to fall apart.

louwn · 09/07/2014 20:32

Hi I'm a newcomer to the running threads, was supposed to be doing a marathon and then back in Feb injured my hip after an 18 mile run. Getting back to running now, in my 4th week of training and building up gradually. Did a fast (for me!) 4 miles at lunch with a colleague - v sweaty afterwards as it was warm. Going to do 5 miles this weekend as my 'long' run.

MazzR · 09/07/2014 20:38

Hi everyone, haven't been out for a run in a week until this morning and actually really missed it! Everyone is doing so well. So, 39:55 from me this morning. I'm off sugar/carbs now since Monday and feeling great and not bloated!!

cinnamongreyhound · 09/07/2014 20:45

Hi louwn! Sorry to hear about your injury.

Glad you're on the mend blatherskite.

It's an RSI problem TessTackle from having weight in your hand and the holding position from the repetitive action of your arm going forwards and backwards.

I am a brooks convert BetsyBell but I did like my saucony before that.

Hope shoes help Sirzy!

First day of my 4 days of running tomorrow :)

originalpiratematerial · 09/07/2014 22:11

Hi louwn! FreeButtonBee that would be awesomely fast for me Grin.

I am finally feeling a bit better physically, although after a mega-stressful day at work, I'm afraid I'm hitting the booze this evening. I am going to attempt a short run, nonetheless, in the morning (probably only about 2 miles) and if that goes ok, do parkrun on Saturday.

I'm now really behind on HM training, oh well. And because I haven't been exercising, I've slept really badly, but dreamt fitfully about running when I have been dozing. I think I need to get a catch of myself Grin.

Well done blathers, hope this means you're on the road to recovery.

originalpiratematerial · 09/07/2014 22:12

cinnamon - does that mean that carrying a water-bottle is also bad? I like my circular one - it is easier to hold than a phone I think. I do swap fro hand to hand quite often.

cinnamongreyhound · 09/07/2014 22:15

Yes, it's not a great idea. Although like everything some people will carry one regularly with no problems and others will only have to do it a few times to feel the affects. All the longh distance runners I know have bottles in belts.

originalpiratematerial · 09/07/2014 22:29

Thank you - I shall think about that!

Morrigu · 09/07/2014 22:42

I'm also a brooks wearer myself, the adrenaline ones as I overpronate.

That's some amount of lengths madthings. I used to love swimming but doubt I could do two these days.

Hi IncidentalGoat and louwn

Glad you're feeling much better pirate. Enjoy your Wine or whatever it is you are having tonight. My hm training has also gone out the window too lately with injury. Rapidly approaching two week sunshine holiday won't help either. Sure these things happen.

This is going to sounds really strange but since starting the longer distances the odd time I've noticed a real ammonia smell once I hit home. Didn't think anything of it other than my nose must be playing up but last night I googled expecting nothing only to find out it's quite common. Has anyone else had this?
Apparently it's the body has run out of carbs for fuel so is using protein which obviously I don't particularly want to happen. Don't get it as I love carbs and have always ate loads of them, only thing being that I don't eat for about two hours before running. Should I be eating something then a bit closer to going out? I also take a handful of sweets with me on longer runs and usually have a few so it's not like I'm running on empty.

TessTackle · 09/07/2014 22:50

Welcome louwn

cinnamon I run with both my phone and my water bottle Blush I'm going to try sewing a bigger pocket into my capris!

Attempting an early run again tomorrow, let's hope I actually get up!
