Next Sunday. I have only managed to run 9k so far, and this week after tomorrow is madness so no time to run which I don't know if it's good or bad!

Sirzy, I'm doing first 10k next Sunday too and the nerves are definitely building! We'll be fine I'm sure but it doesn't stop me worrying! Mine will be on an almost completely flat course, hope yours is not too tricky. Good luck!

originalpiratematerial · 11/05/2014 22:47

I think you will be fine, honestly! And I hardly ran at all in the week before mine as I had various niggles going on and everyone said to rest! And it was fine. I mean, not super-fast or anything but respectable.

originalpiratematerial · 11/05/2014 22:48

The one thing I would say is that although I was quite used to running up to 10 k without water, for some reason I felt thirsty almost as soon as I set off - probably nerves - and was really cursing myself for not taking water. Had to stop to slurp out of a drinking fountain!

originalpiratematerial · 11/05/2014 22:53

Thank you so much for your input on the Hackney HM Smile. Yes I did think of the poster's friend who entered a 10 mile run with absolutely no preparation Grin. I'm glad that you experienced runners don't think it would be the end of the world if I had to walk a bit of it. I think I will try and get my mileage up to a respectable level again this week and then make the final decision whether to enter at the end of the week.

Sirzy · 11/05/2014 22:53

I'm doing the Manchester 10k which I am led to believe is fairly flat

Sirzy · 11/05/2014 22:54

I am not expecting to be anything close to fast, as long as I finish I will be happy!

Likewise Sirzy! The forecast here is suggesting it might be warm - not too used to that up here so will be carrying extra drinks I think!

cinnamongreyhound · 12/05/2014 07:47

Definitely not the end of the world to walk originalpiratematerial!! Lots of people walk in time intervals all the way round in order to get round. I think it depends how you feel. I pretty much died at 8.5 miles on my first when dh and ds's weren't where I thought they were to support me but I found after 11 something changed and I upped my pace. In my second I was fine until I took too much water at 10miles and by 11.5 I was walking. My last one I got to 12 before I really felt tired but I had my doggy to keep me going. I think you will increase your mileage over the next few weeks and if it's hot you can take it slower but I also wanted to be honest and say I found each half I've done really hard in the last few miles! I cried at the end of the first 2 and said I'd never do it again but within a couple of hours I already started thinking about it! Even yesterday in mile 9 running up a hill into the wind I was thinking why do I do this but I have to finish and was then sad yesterday afternoon I don't have a race for a while! For me I enjoy the whole of a 10k race but anything longer there are definitely some miserable moments before the finish which feels great! Sorry that's ended up a bit long!

I managed to upset a poster a thread I post on regularly and rarely post now KristinaM and I'd really miss this one so I'm always a bit cautious!

cinnamongreyhound · 12/05/2014 08:17

Having said all of that I do have a time in mind and do push myself hard during races so if I took it a bit easier I may enjoy it more!

originalpiratematerial · 12/05/2014 09:11

Thanks cinnamon, that's really helpful. In a way I'm glad to hear you say you've found the last few miles hard - I know I really will but it would be worse if I thought everyone else was just finding them easy, iyswim!

Blatherskite · 12/05/2014 09:48

I say go for the HM originalpiratematerial but then I would Wink

When I signed up for my first one, I was running really well - then I got injured and despite trying to train, by the time the day came round, I hadn't run more than 7 miles in the previous 6 months. I had to walk up the final hill but I ran the rest and it was an unseasonably hot day for March. You'll be fine - go for it. If you have to walk some, just think of it as a training run. The C25K does run/walk when you're building up distance after all.

Slightly concerned that everyone seems to think 5 HMs in a year is crazy. I have a few 10ks to do in between times too! I think maybe my perspective on crazy is slightly skewed as there are a number of friends on my FB feed doing the Brathay 10 in 10 this week which is 10 full marathons in 10 days. 5 HMs spread over a full year seems like nothing in comparison :) I'm aiming to do at least one of my HMs in sub 2 hours. I did number 1 in 2:13, number 2 in 2:06... The Great Birmingham Run and the Nottingham half are supposed to be PB HMs too as they're very flat. If I can keep training up and avoid getting injured, I think it might be achievable.

Oh and a little update on DD - we've been told we can stop testing her blood sugar now and she's fine :) They think the odd readings were caused by the concussion.

Blatherskite · 12/05/2014 09:52

I'd also echo cinnamon in that for both of my HMs so far, I have found anything past 11 miles really, really hard. I blamed my injury on the first one being painful and my lack of training on the second one being hard but there was a part of my head just thinking "you're not built to run this far" and "half marathons suck".

It's obviously not put me off too badly though :)

vladthedisorganised · 12/05/2014 09:58

Checking in with my 6.3 miles on Saturday - so that takes us to 537.9.
My oh my, it poured. I had to stop twice to clean the water off my glasses - time to invest in a cap I think. My trainers still aren't dry and water was shooting out of them with every step by the time I got home. I felt quite dedicated/ daft/ soaked.

Considering the rain, the wind being against me and the fact I'm not particularly fast, managing it in just over an hour was quite good.

Morning running friends. Sorry, I've been a bit busy somehow this weekend to keep up with the thread, but so lovely to read through everyone's trials and triumphs this morning!

Going to try and run later, but period pains and I are just getting reacquainted after a two year break. I know a run will make me feel better, it's just getting out the door.

Treated myself to a pair of trail shoes. I figure if Cornwall is as wet as it usually is, my parkrun is never going to dry out, so I'd just as well bite the bullet and get some now.

fingersonbuzzers · 12/05/2014 10:27

sirzy you will be fine for your 10k. I'd only run up to 4 miles before mine, plus hadn't run since 6 day earlier so you're way ahead of me - your determination will get you through, go for it!

cinnamon - could you take your dog on your HM? Which one was that? Would love to bring mine along for company to run with me.

blathers yes 5 HM's is crazy but I know what you mean about other runners - did you see/do you know the MK lady who did the Marathon de Sable? I am fairly sure I would cry if I attempted that!

No running for me today - whatever bloody virus I had that was affecting my chest is back :( spent most of last night coughing so will have to stay away from running a bit as I have to be extra careful due to being asthmatic :( gutted as was looking forward to a long run today. Aiming to be back on track on Wednesday.

Blatherskite · 12/05/2014 10:34

I know that lady fingers, she's lovely :) She's one of the green lot too. She's signed up to do the 7 marathons in 7 days that run around the MK lakes in March so I'm hoping to marshal again to be there to support her and the others.

TessTackle · 12/05/2014 10:36

Morning, checking in my 4.58 which takes us to 542.48

I'm feeling really disheartened today, struggled in the heat and sun and there were two stuck up bitches laughing openly at me as I went round doing my c25k. It's made me not want to go again and to top it off I've hurt my left ankle/calf so won't be getting out tomorrow.

How can anyone be so cruel? I'm aware I'm not a pretty sigh when running but I'm hardly a whale, I'm starting to tone up and was getting some confidence back as they've completely shattered it Sad

Fishandjam · 12/05/2014 11:04

Oh Tess, that's horrid. Please try to ignore them. They're really not worth wasting emotion on - easy to say, I know, but they are the lesser people, not you.

I hope your calf feels better - though don't forget you need rest days in between runs!

fingersonbuzzers · 12/05/2014 11:18

7 marathons in 7 days! Shock

Tesstackle - you had the last laugh though, you were out there doing something good and they were standing around being idiots. You did a great job, well done!

cinnamongreyhound · 12/05/2014 11:20

You can't take dogs on many runs but I'm now a member of a canicross group on fb and they let you know dog friendly races. We did the saxmumdham rotary coastal run/walk, you can run or walk either 10k, hm or marathon fingersonbuzzers. There's also a 10k local to me called mud and mayhem that you can take dogs on, plus specific canicross runs but they're often too far away for me!

I enjoyed my third the most blatherskite and it was by far the toughest! Not sure if I'm getting used to the distance or having doggy with me kept my spirits up. I'm definitely entering one in November just not sure which and considering one in September so that will take me to 4 this year too :)

briteside · 12/05/2014 11:22

Shock Tess - that is horrible and I can see why it knocked your confidence. Don't worry about those idiots, YOU were the one out there getting healthy. I like to think that they were completely jealous. How much says they could barely run across the road without gasping for breath?

Well done on getting out and I hope your ankle & calf get better soon.

cinnamongreyhound · 12/05/2014 11:27

Sorry TessTackle I missed your post, that's really horrible and I'm sorry you experienced it. I have no idea what makes people behave like that as I never would. You are soon a great job, rest your ankle and get back out there when it's feeling better. You're running for you so try to ignore those woman who clearly have too much time on their hands. You will gain confidence, I only ran in the dark when I started!

ThursdayLast · 12/05/2014 11:37

Oh Tess Sad
What horrid little lives they lead. Lucky for them they don't have anything more important to think about.
Don't let them put you off. Just give them the finger if you see them again
