dotty Try Vaseline where the tops rub. It's recommended for shorts rubbing so I can't see why it wouldn't work for sleeves too.

fingers the Silverstone course goes round the race track so it's very, very flat and yes, totally devoid of shade. I'm also told that it is fairly boring as there's not a lot in the way of scenery and that anything more than 2 laps of the course (ie 10k) is mind-numbing. The half marathon does seem popular though - although maybe not more than once Wink

If you're not far from Silverstone you may not be far from me. There might be loads of other races I could suggest for you :)

Felt like running through treacle, one of those days!
Have a 10k on 18th so was planning to run 5k twice next week but am now getting nervous and thinking I should do 5 and a 3 instead so I have plenty of energy. Any opinions/advice? Have never doe a 10k race before, so am getting increasingly nervous! Have done it in training 4 times now so I know I can, just nervous anyway!

fingersonbuzzers · 06/05/2014 16:56

Silverstone sounds promising for a pb then! Blathers, any suggestions would be very welcome, thank you. This race on Thursday is in Caldecotte in Mk.

Morrigu · 06/05/2014 17:00

Good luck for your 10k tomorrow Blather and yours on Thursday fingers.

Have you tried Vaseline on the bit of the t-shirt that's rubbing dotty? I'm sure I read it as a tip somewhere. I've started to wear vests myself but bought this t-shirt to wear over my vest as I'm not brave enough to wear one by itself. It's very light (and see-through so you need a vest) and loose cap sleeves.

Blatherskite · 06/05/2014 17:17

I'm hoping so fingers. I need something under 56:45 to get a PB and I set that over a year ago at the MK Festival of running so I'm hopeful. I'll be fine as long as this ache that's returned in my calf turns out to be nothing.

Caldecotte I know very well as I help out at the marathons that run around there regularly. In fact, it's where I did my half PB a few weeks ago :)

Blatherskite · 06/05/2014 17:36

fingers there are a few of us from here going to do the Whipsnade Zoo Stampede next month which is a 10k and fairly local if you fancy it?

fingersonbuzzers · 06/05/2014 17:45

Thank you morrigu. I've been a bit under the weather for the last week or so but aiming to shift it - going to an exercise class tonight rather than running then I guess I'll just have to wing it on Thursday - it's all good fun, eh? Looking forward to it in a weird kind of way..

Good luck blathers, will be thinking of you tomorrow and hoping we don't get too much sunshine! I like the fact that you got a pb at Caldecotte! Not run much round there but done Parkrun around Willen a bit - no zigzags at Caldecotte I take it?!

Just googled the zoo stampede - that looks awesome and it's DD2's birthday next month so could possibly combine it with a family day out...will see how I get on on Thursday before I commit!

Let us know how you get on tomorrow!

feetheart · 06/05/2014 18:02

fingers - entrants get 25% off ticket prices that day if that would help you decide :)

There is also: Superhero 5k in Harpenden on June 15th June
Northampton Colour 5k
and a 3 race series run by Luton Athletic club at the end of June/beginning of July.
Not sure if they count as local to you?

fingersonbuzzers · 06/05/2014 18:08

ooh, feetheart, didn't know that about the discount - sounds good.

Those others look good too, thank you, am in MK so they aren't too far - I like the look of the colour race Smile

Blatherskite · 06/05/2014 18:09

No, no zig zags :) Caldecotte is fairly flat. There are a couple of 'undulations' where you go over the weir but nothing too taxing. It definitely has PB potential and is a good bet for a first run as you can just keep plodding to get round if you need to. It's about 5k all the way round so I'd guess you'll be doing 2 laps but you start and finish at a pub at least :) Parking will be easy too. My tip would be not to get too excited as you dip under the road on the opposite side of the lake to the pub. You feel like you're really close to the pub and the end of the lap must be coming soon but that other part of the lake is deceptively big and in actual fact you're only about halfway there. I run round there regularly at lunchtimes and have found that it's easy to get disheartened if you think you're nearly done but you're not. I hated that bridge on the last lap on my half marathon :)

I have a few friends running in that race tomorrow (they'll be the ones in those green shirts you see at most of the local running events) so I'm very tempted to come over and say "Hi" but don't want to overload you for your first 10k.

I'm regularly at MK parkrun so if I don't, I'm sure it could be arranged to bump into one another there at some point if you liked?

Tomorrow is an evening race too so it won't start until 7:30pm and the sun shouldn't be too bad. I need to take a few doses of antihistamines before then though as the pollen will be starting to settle and I struggled at last weeks parkrun thanks to my hayfever. I'll be back with a race report just as soon as we've finished at the pub afterwards Grin

fingersonbuzzers · 06/05/2014 18:34

Ooh, that's a great tip, thanks blathers. I don't live that far from Caldecotte and you saying that has just reminded me that I walked down there one day last year in the blazing heat with DD in the pushchar. I walked all the way round the lake and did that exact thing thinking I was nearly at the pub then finding a whole other loop to go around first. Thank you very much for that I will bear that in mind!

Ah yes, I know the green runners :) If you see a knackered looking mid 30s woman in a black nike t shirt that'll be me (I suspect there'll be a few of us though!)

Will def look out for you at parkrun next time - was thinking of going this Saturday but will see if I've recovered from Thursday first!

Hope the sun and the pollen are forgiving to you tomorrow. Like the sound of finishing in the pub!

Am also planning on doing the OU 10k at the beginning of July, though slightly scared of that one as I think it's part of the Grand Prix and lots of v good runners in it.

Blatherskite · 06/05/2014 19:06

Hooray for me being useful Grin

Those green runners get everywhere. We have a saying that they're a bit like rats - you're never more than about 6 foot away from one Wink They are very good at finding a pub to celebrate the end of a race in though.

I won't be at parkrun for a few weeks as my friend and I are doing some tourism until she reaches her 100th but I'll be back on June 7th and more regularly after that. If you can make the week after next then you should go along as they're changing the route at MK on the 10th which should make the start less congested. You'll still have to run up the zig zags though :)

The Silverstone 10k is the first of the Grand Prix series and the OU one is the last I think. It can't be that full of v good runners as I'm doing it Wink

cinnamongreyhound · 06/05/2014 19:33

I know someone who did the silverstone half and he said you never cover the same bit of track in the same direction twice so hopefully not too boring as I'm thinking of doing it but it's a similar time to the Cambridge half I believe.

PolkaSpottyDotty · 06/05/2014 19:44

3.47 miles in 33:52.

I'm just going to have a lay down.... Grin

HalleLouja · 06/05/2014 19:55

Bumped into someone on my warm up and ran with her for a while. It was a short run as I left it too late and then had to pick up kids.

Anyway forgot to switch on runkeeper so have no idea as went a different route. It was about 4km

It was my first run with someone.

Runkittyrun · 06/05/2014 20:10

Blimey everyone's been busy. Did a Jillian Michaels DVD yesterday (No More Trouble Zones) to work on my core, and give my knee a bit more rest.
Went out this evening and did 6.5 miles with strides, fairly slow but knee held up Smile hooray!
Total now 273.3

Wondering whether my knee will be ok for the first of the Kevin Henry league 5k races on Thursday. Hmmm.

Runkittyrun · 06/05/2014 20:12

Oops didn't add Halle's miles , so that's 275.7

briteside · 06/05/2014 20:15

Hi all,

Some good runs going on there! I had an awful, awful run this afternoon - I did 8km but only managed 3km before I had to start walking/running, then I got lost and...urgh....it was just so annoying. I couldn't get my breathing right, I couldn't find my rhythm to keep going. This is the second 'bad' run in the last week and I am sooooo frustrated.

Welcome dotty (I promise I am normally more positive Blush )

I also struggle with running tops (More because I want to hide my tummy!) I have this top from H&M which is really soft material so it doesn't rub at all and might be what you are looking for on the arms? www.hm.com/gb/product/15227?article=15227-A

briteside · 06/05/2014 20:18

And the new total is 280.7 miles

ThursdayLast · 06/05/2014 20:19

Oh help. I realised that now I'm only bfing once a day but still eating like DS is having a growth spurt I'm getting tubby again.
So I did x training again today and now feel a little bit sick.
Anyone else find that while running is obviously great for your fitness, your body becomes accustomed to it?

briteside · 06/05/2014 20:32

yes thursday !!!!!

I agree completely. The first time I started running regularly (Before kids) the weight fell off me. I seemed to eat what I wanted and still regularly lose weight.

Not this time. Not at all!

I do wonder if increasing Fartlek and Hill training would help (But haven't actually started any Grin )

originalpiratematerial · 06/05/2014 21:31

briteside ThursdayLast - my experience is definitely that my body seems to have got used to running - the weight just fell off me when I first started but I've been pretty steady at just below 9 stone since January now although I've increased my distance a lot.

originalpiratematerial · 06/05/2014 21:32

I'm still lurgified and therefore not doing the Tower of London 10k thing tomorrow - really disappointed but I still have a really sore throat, my chest is scratchy and I feel knackered. No proper exercise since Friday - I hate it Sad.

Mitchy1nge · 06/05/2014 21:39

new total is 282.4 with my excessively cautious contribution of 1.7 miles

am enjoying not being in pain anyway :)

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 06/05/2014 21:44

No running for me today, but great to be able to come on this thread and see what everyone else has been up to!
DP didn't get in until after I'd eaten my dinner tonight and I didn't want to go out on a full stomach for obvious reasons. Blush
So I did a thirty minute sprint interval session on my trusty exercise bike followed by 40 squats, 40 lunges and a 30 second plank. DP watched me from his armchair, totally bemused I think!
