New total 159.2 after my run today. Am a bit deflated as the garmin is much more accurate than strava on my iPhone and I wasn't going as far as I had thought. Sad Still did it in 63 mins which is not too bad really! Really need to start doing some more hills and speed work I guess! and lose still a reasonable whack of weight!

Knackerelli · 04/05/2014 19:42

Hi ladies, I'm a lurker although I do occasionally post on the parkrun threads. Just wanted to share with people who would understand really; am feeling really proud of myself! Signed up for a 10k at Christmas but then work went insane so haven't really been able to train. 10k went from being ages away to...gulp...next week. Was really freaking out as most I'd run was 4.5 miles. So went out this morning, enjoyed the sun, got lost and ran 9 miles!

CQ · 04/05/2014 19:53

Wow that mileage has shot up today! Amazing what a bit of sunshine can do for the running mojo.

A great run PostmanPat - especially with no food/water etc - think you must have been on a runner's high.

And well done Cinnamon and CinnamonDog - that must have been so much fun. How do you stop all the dogs from having a big old dust-up?!

I did a short but hilly 2.5 miles today with my 15 yr old DS who has just been declared fit for sport after a broken leg. Even with one wasted leg he was still waiting for me at the top of the hill. 'Come ON Mum', all the way round. Tempted to take him for 6 miles tomorrow and see if I can outrun him

So I think the total is now 161.7

Have any of you done the lowcarb bootcamp and carried on running? If so, did it feel ok or do you feel like you're running on empty? I'm planning to start it tomorrow - I need to shift a serious amount of weight, fast, because I think now I'm doing more running I will find it easier to keep off. I just need to get rid of a couple of stone so I can run a bit faster, then I can run off some more. Hmm

LostMyPants · 04/05/2014 19:55

WHY DID NOBODY WARN ME HOW ADDICTIVE RUNNING IS?!

If only my knees were as happy about running as the rest of me I'd be out every day. If they're better tomorrow i will head out tomorrow. If not it will be Wednesday.

LostMyPants · 04/05/2014 19:55

And thank you for all your responses telling me I'm right and DH is wrong Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 04/05/2014 20:33

Hi Knackerelli! Well done in that in read in mileage!

There we only a few dogs taking part CQ, my doggy was slightly harassed by a boy pointer but otherwise they pretty much left each other alone. I find she's very focused when running at parkrun and she was today too :)

cinnamongreyhound · 04/05/2014 20:41

Should be increase not 'in read'!!

feetheart · 04/05/2014 20:46

Lovely 5.1 miles this morning, beautiful day for running and then spent the whole afternoon wandering around Whipsnade. Tired now :)
Total - 166.8

Have promised DS(8) that I'll take him out tomorrow morning as he wants to start training for Zoo Stampede and Northampton Colour5k in June (is that the one you are doing mummylion? He has also persuaded me that we need to enter a Superhero run in June for our local children's hospice Hmm

youbethemummylion · 04/05/2014 20:56

Nope feetheart mine is in the North East never done a colour run before so really looking forward to something different.

Glitterkitten24 · 04/05/2014 21:35

Hello, can I join you?

I did my first 5k event today in Glasgow (race for life) and really enjoyed it - 35 minutes to finish with training for approx 8 weeks now.
I'm thinking of signing up for a 10k in October to keep me motivated and give a a goal on my way to being a 'serious' runner.

After having dc I've struggled to fit in exercise to my day and am loving being able to pop out for a run when I have a spare 30 mins rather than trying to plan logistics of getting to gym/ timings for aerobics classes etc.

I have caught the running bug!

HalleLouja · 04/05/2014 22:34

3.2 miles done. That's 170 in total.

I ran faster than before. Was quite shocked after my long run yesterday

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 05/05/2014 09:26

Another 3 miles from me this morning, taking it to 173.

PolkaSpottyDotty · 05/05/2014 09:28

Hello everyone :)

I've missed a lot, blimey you've been busy! I think it is going to be almost impossible to catch up completely...

I'm pleased to say that I've continued pushing on, and now I've gone from not running at all at the end of March to running 7k comfortably (no stopping yippeee!) and just getting a PB for 5k in 31 minutes. Very happy.

I need to have a bit of a vent though; DH seems to have turned this all into a bit of a competition. He's not a runner, never has been, but decided to see if he could "keep up with me" while I was doing C25K. He's never been happy with not matching my time or distance, and has joked too many times that he won't be beaten. Last night he ran the same route I took for my PB 5k and, of course, ran it quicker. He pushed himself hard because he didn't want to finish in a slower time. My goal, as he well knows, is to do my 5k race next month in 30 minutes or less. Well guess what? He did the same route in 30 minutes. I'd asked him not to be so competitive last week and told him he wasn't spurring me on (as he claimed to be trying to do) but just making me feel a bit shit as I've had to work really hard to get to this point and he just goes out once or twice and trashes my time and feelings. So I was a bit upset last night and told him he was being a prick ( Blush ) and spoiling it for me. I don't want him to stop running but I do want him to stop being so bloody competitive. He's not normally like this!

I could probably write a whole AIBU on it, but I thought you lot would be more gentle and understanding :)

Hope everyone is well and injury free. And all those knobbly knees are behaving themselves!

anotherbitofcake · 05/05/2014 09:34

Polka that is amazing going. Pffff to men. Tell him that he actually needs to run sub 23 ( or thereabouts) for it to be of real comparison. That should keep him busy for a while.Grin

Another 3 miles from me. What a lovely day. Running used to be my release and now even more so with little one about. Cherish every run I'm able to go on. Bliss! No crying! Proper me time.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 05/05/2014 09:42

Polka that's annoying of him! Tell him from me he's being an arse! Grin Seriously though, you can choose to not let his time get to you. His time has no bearing at all on yours. He is male, he hasn't got your legs and isn't even going to be in the same race. Tell him well done, not bad for a man. Wink Maybe you could get dh to do parkruns so that he can compete against men in his own age category. If you go too, you can both see how you are doing in your own age and gender category too.

PolkaSpottyDotty · 05/05/2014 09:49

You are both so right.

I'm judging him by my own standards - if he had a goal which I could achieve before him, I'd leave it. There's no way I'd get that time before him, I'd let him have it as his achievement iyswim.

It's never been about competition for me - 4 years ago I was on crutches and under a chronic pain management team and I didn't think I'd walk unaided again. He should have the respect to hang back and enjoy the achievements with me and not against me. He doesn't see it like that and apparently I should be honoured by him doing this as I've inspired him Hmm

feetheart · 05/05/2014 09:58

Polka - I'd be very pissed off if DH did that to me. I agree with getting him to do parkrun or have a look at the age-grading thing as that takes gender into account. Then he can compare fairly if he has to compare at all
And well done for your achievements, it is really inspiring (just not in a competitive arse way)

1.5 miles this morning with DS (8). We did 3 laps of the park (a nice 0.5 mile loop) - 1 slow, 1 quicker and one alternating slow/fast. He was good company and is talking about another run after school on Weds. It is going to take some interesting logistics to fit his runs and mine into a week!

Total 174.5

DotToDott · 05/05/2014 10:03

Braving a run today, despite being bogged down with a cold and sore throat.

Any advice? normally i wouldn't bother going but i have my first race in two weeks, i can't afford to skip sessions!

it's only 5k, not a long run but i've only managed the full thing twice before now.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 05/05/2014 10:10

It sounds as though it is the way he is doing it, rather than the bare bones of what he is doing that you're feeling is unreasonable. Really, you've done well to not give up. Don't compare, and ask him not to either. Perhaps for a lot of men, being competitive is all they know in terms of encouragement. Maybe model the kind of things you want him to say and do, and he will might learn.

You are getting a lot more involvement and interest than I get from DH. He lies in bed and makes me feel guilty for going out early, or sits in a cafe while I run and buys me cake and chocolate. Not a great personal trainer! Grin

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 05/05/2014 10:19

Dottodott my advice is go do a 5k 3 or 4 times this week, varying how much of it you actually run, depending on how you feel. Go somewhere not too public so you can not mind if your nose is running or if you need to spit phlegm into the tall grass! Sip drinks all day, drink more than you normally would. Make sure you also get enough salts and calories/carbs (you can lose your appetite with a cold).

BUT if you get fluey/achy/feverish then don't run. Just put your long term health first and cancel going to the race.

officelady · 05/05/2014 10:24

4 miles done so that brings our total to
178.5
Well done everyone! Great to hear all the stories of personal triumph. I did my furthest run to date this morning, when I started C25K in March I never imagined I would be able to do 4 whole miles with no walking. Amazing how you can build up gradually as long as you stick at it.
polka you and dh can't compare times - has he never watched sport on TV? Men and women compete separately for a reason! It's like comparing apples and pears! Tell him to stop being an idiot. Well done on your run - especially after your previous problems. Amazing achievement!

ThursdayLast · 05/05/2014 10:38

Ahah lostmypants you're one of us now....

Welcome Knackerelli and Glitter!

Well done for yesterday cinnamon, I hope you're treating yourself today.
And well done officelady too! I love those times when you get an epiphany - Holy Shit, I couldn't do that the other day and I JUST DID IT!

And hello everyone else, sorry this thread moves so fast!
polka, your DH sounds a bit of a wolly. Ignore him. Use us instead Smile

Relucto-dog and I did 5 miles this morning, with added sprints at the end which did not go down at all well.

New Total 183.5

DotToDott · 05/05/2014 11:03

Thanks YeGods.

I'm certain I will be better for race day, and in any case i will walk the thing if i have to- it's my first so i don't want to back out and have raised lots of money for charity in sponsorship, so don't want to let myself or anyone else down!

Plan to run my 5k route today, tomorrow, thursday friday. I do have an ok appetite so will make sure to eat plenty.... i did wonder about having some lucozade sport or similar before my run? just to keep energy/salt etc up. not something i'd normally bother with but i'm not well so the boost might help.

My elbow joints are a bit achey Hmm which does annoy me, sore throat but ok other than that.

Polka your DH is being an arse! ignore him and don't give him any acknowledgement when he brags!

PolkaSpottyDotty · 05/05/2014 11:05

Thanks everyone for the support, I knew you'd get it!

Have spoken to him again this morning. I told him if he wanted a competition and a challenge then he could have one - but had to make it comparable. He looked interested until I told him he had to run 5k in 23 minutes the day before my race, and he needs to go out and do 7k in 45 minutes tonight. His face was a picture :)

He didn't see it as I did, but has said he will lay off. I'm going out twice today, I just want to get going! Will update my miles later.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 05/05/2014 12:28

Milk is a good drink too. Also, at a different time of day, a vitamin tonic with iron and an orange juice chaser is great.

Lucozade looks and tastes like it is full of crap to me, but idk if the sports version is better. There are other sports drinks. I'd be looking for a range of salts in it (potasium and magnesium) not necessarily just sodium as there's already plenty in food. I tend to stick to drinking water and try to eat fish, eggs, cheese, meat and veg through the week for the salt.

Oily fish is good (mackerel, sardines, salmon, trout rather than cod or tuna) and the omega oil and vitamins would probably help your elbow.
