lost I think you're right. I haven't done couch to 5k but don't you build distance through running for longer, even if you need a walk break now and then? I can remember the effort it took to reach 5k and you're making good progress. Tell DH to cheer you on and stop being negative! Does he run too? Sometimes they're the worst sort voice of experience

I think other runners often think what works for them will be right for someone new to running but I agree with postmanpatscat, he's completely wrong, every beginner plan that is based on a run/walk thing will increase the distance up to 5k and then you run continuously

am doing a whole marathon plan based on run walk intervals at the moment! apparently it is a good injury proofing approach. when I couldn't run at all I kept walking the distance and am sure it helps maintain endurance and fitness, walking is seriously underrated

I did nearly five miles but run keeper wasn't working properly today so didn't properly track. my legs are knackered now.

I think you should do what you feel comfortable with LostMyPants! There's absolutely nothing wrong with running further with walking breaks though and you can then reduce the walking breaks once you're total is up to 5k.

I can't run 5k nonstop at the moment, but every time I go out I do my 5k route and walk when needed. You can even time yourself, so many minutes running/a minut break, or count street lights. Personally I think it's better to do the longer distance. I make sure I always end on a run section too because the psychological high of that is great.

I joined at the end of the last thread - only started running last weekend and in my second run on Monday I ran 5k in 40 mins, which is very a bit slow and I was practically walking near the end. How likely am I to be able to run 10k by the end of September? There's a local 10k that I fancy entering but as a complete beginner and someone who's never entered a race before, I'm not sure if that's a bit ambitious. What do you think? If achievable, what's the best way to approach it and where would I find a training plan for it, please?

I've downloaded Runkeeper and Endomono, as both have been recommended by friends, but which of these is the best? I'm hoping to get a Garmin in a few months but need an app to track my progress until then.

Hoping to get out tomorrow afternoon but it'll be a short, slow run as I'll be running with DS.

Hello again. Been a while since I've posted having been totally lax about running since the half I did back in March. Hard to get my running mojo back, and I needed a break tbh.
But today (drumroll) I did my first ever Parkrun. How much fun are they??? Feeling v stupid for not discovering this sooner esp as I'm about a mile away from our Parkrun venue, which is the one where it all began apparently but it's fab to have a new focus. And clearly it helped that the park was drenched in sunshine, birds singing etc etc...
So with my run to and fro, I can add another 5 miles to the total, making 77 I think.

SoftKittyWarmKitty - it is def doable! I would carry on with the 5k distance, and then do one longer run each week and add 1k at a time. Well done on the 5k! 40 mins is perfectly respectable for a first. Smile

I wish i could do park run! Ours are a good half hour drive, plus then I have to pay for parking on top, so as much as I would love to go, it is so much easier just to head straight out the door instead.

kitty I started running in mid-January and can run 10k now - first race in a couple of weeks. So totally achievable, especially if you can already do a full 5km, which I emphatically could not when I started!

I think you have to listen to your own body, whether it is starting running, building up distance or recovering from an injury. Whatever the general rule of thumb is, take into account your own fitness, health, height, weight, attitude/drive and especially your own experience. No one else has been running in your body and knows what it feels like and no one else has to suffer the consequences of pain/injury if you get it wrong. There will always be other races.

I did 5.6k on Friday and a parkrun (my first) yesterday, so another 6 miles to add to the total of 85 miles.

Blisters: use surgical spirit on them before they pop to harden the skin. I hate blister plasters, they give me a weird achy feeling below the skin and make me want to itch inside my foot. Confused I've also managed to mostly avoid blisters with karrimor ankle socks (3 for 2 in Sports Direct).

Rowers use thick zink oxide tape around their hands to prevent blisters. I think I'd put that on my feet if I were doing marathons, to avoid being skinned, probably not recommended though (and I cannot envisage me ever doing a marathon).

Injinji toe socks great for blister prevention as is zinc oxide powder (like talc) and yes taping blisters if they appear on race

I am feeling very low-tech for relying on a good coating of vaseline on feet and other bits which get rubbed (bra band, and where the seam of one of my tops catches the inside of my upper arm) Grin

4.5 miles this morning in lovely sunshine , knee still not happy so keeping it easy. So total is now 89.5 miles.

Softkitty - that's the sort of timeframe I worked up to a 10k race in. I used a runners world plan. Well done DottoDott on conquering your big hill!

softkitty if you have already run 5k (doesn't matter how slowly - you still did it!) you will be okay for a 10k by September. That's assuming you stay injury free of course. I'm using Runkeeper, if you go on the Runkeeper website there are some 10k training plans which take about 16 weeks to complete, it's a very gradual build up of distance and/or pace. Really helpful for beginners like me who haven't got a clue how far/fast/often to run.

I have been on the Sports Direct website this morning and bought All The Things! A couple of new t-shirts, a long-sleeved top with thumbholes, some capri pants and yet more Karrimor socks. I also ordered a new pair of trainers because I noticed that the sole of one of mine has started to come away slightly at the front - disaster!! I know I should get properly fitted and all that, but am hoping the pair I ordered will at least be comfortable and tide me over until I can get a proper pair sorted out.

According to my training plan I should be doing a 6k run today which would be my longest to date. However I am stuck in the house because we're having our fence repaired and dh is away on a lads' weekend. He's due home later but not sure he will be in any state to go running! Confused
Luckily due to bank holiday I can do my run tomorrow morning if I don't manage to get out there today.

Did a 2m interval session this morning round the park while DH did the tedious playground bit so new total is 91.5.

So sold on speed work now - my recovery pace now was my fast pace a month ago!
