Found you on the new shiny thread! Lots of new runners inspired by yesterday's London Marathon - hi all.

I got back from holiday yesterday - a week of eating, reading and a bit of swimming - got off the plane at Heathrow feeling like a lump of lard and everywhere I looked there was marathon coverage!

Need to get back out there today. Jet lag taking a hold so maybe just a short one to keep me awake until a decent bed time.

Sirzy · 14/04/2014 15:58

I don't know, just seems to go against everything about making sure you are fueled up I guess. But I have trouble with low blood sugar anyway so I can't see it ever working for me!

I was experimenting a bit last year with doing some longer runs in a glycogen depleted state, there is definitely a case for doing at least some of your runs fasted if you are preparing for a marathon or beyond because it's supposed to help you store more glycogen and use fat more easily but not if you do it all the time - I think 'they' discovered you don't get any extra benefits from doing all your runs on empty and eventually performance started to suffer

it might have been a tri or cycling study, will see if I can find it

Hi everyone

I'm very sore today and can hardly move but yesterday was totally worth it. Can't believe I did it. There were moments when I struggled and the legs got very heavy from about 19 miles onwards but I managed to get to the finish. It was lovely to run down the embankment and see the Houses of Parliament and know that then I could turn into Birdcage Walk and the end was nearly in sight.

It was a truly amazing day. Lovely weather and atmosphere. I had my name on my vest and it was a real boost to be cheered on. I managed a time of 5:27:28 with another Lullaby Trust runner just behind me. It was great to have a photo taken together at the finish.Smile I'm still on a highSmile

EauRouge · 14/04/2014 16:53

Fantastic! I was wondering how you got on. Brilliant, well done you :) I bet your high will last for ages!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 14/04/2014 16:57

HUUUUGGGGEEEE congratulations flutie. Well done!

I think (from my pre-marathon reading) that your body will use whatever fuel it can metabolise the fastest, with stored body fat being the hardest fuel to use, and therefore third choice after glucose stored in the muscles and glycogen which IIRC is stored in the liver. That's why you are supposed to take gels/sports drinks every 30-45 minutes to top up your glucose stores and put less pressure on your body.

I think there is also something to do with speed of running (and how long you run for) which affects how you use stored fuel - the long training runs are to get you used to using glycogen/fat.

sassytheFIRST · 14/04/2014 17:02

Well DONE flutie, your time is similar to my sister. I wonder if we cheered you on while waiting for her? On the Highway, just near the 13 mile marker (and returned to see her on way back at 22 miles).

Fantastic job, well done you. Hope you are putting your feet up today!

Mitchy1nge · 14/04/2014 17:18

brilliantly well done flutie! Grin

funchum8am · 14/04/2014 17:18

Hi all, I have done c25k as a New Year project and did my first 10k since about 2008 last week, and have another next Monday. I am very very slow but have really for the running bug, and considering a 9 mile race in June, then maybe a half later this year.

Well done everyone on being runners!

Sirzy · 14/04/2014 17:27

Well done flutie, that's amazing!

Back out once DD gets picked up tomorrow; still looking for a good sports bra ffs. I'll get there eventually. For now I'll continue wearing a normal bra under my shit nike one.

orangeflutie · 14/04/2014 18:33

Thanks everyoneSmile Sassy it's extremely likely you cheered me on whilst waiting for your sister especially as the times are so similar. I was looking around all over the placeSmile My DH and DDs, my sister DBIL and niece and nephew waited for me at Canary Wharf. It gave me a real lift to see them.

KristinaM · 14/04/2014 19:01

Well done flutie what an achievement! And such a worthwhile cause.

thefemaleJoshLyman · 14/04/2014 19:46

Flutie, that's fantastic! Well done you!!

cinnamongreyhound · 14/04/2014 20:05

Well done orangeflutie! I'm in awe of anyone who completes a marathon!!!!

Sounds like you were near to my club SassytheFIRST, they had a Thetford AC banner :)

May just be my lack of fitness but I did feel something for breakfast would have helped.

Dh and my mum had a big argument last night about my weightloss :( my mum is convinced it's down to running and she won't have it that 30mins 3x a week which is what I did while losing weight and quite a while after won't shift 5st and that I didn't eat much less. She says because I eat chocolate which she can't do means it must be running. It doesn't matter that I make choices as to what I eat and that she drinks at least a bottle of wine a day. Dh thinks she's unfair to me as she doesn't realise just how much will power it's taken to shift the weight and keep it off for almost 2 years. Made me :( as they always get on so well and I know why dh insisits on arguing with her and she doesn't mean to say it was easy but essentially that's what she's saying.

PeanutPatty · 14/04/2014 20:12

Marking place!

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 14/04/2014 20:27

Well done Flutie, awesome, it looks like an amazing experience.

I ran along the canal this evening. The weather was glorious. However there were lots of little midgey flies and I think I have inhaled or eaten at least half a dozen.

KristinaM · 14/04/2014 20:49

Cinnimon -your mother is taking crap. I'm running 50 miles /80 km a week ATM and I've not lost an ounce. Apparently 80% of people training for a marathon don't change their weight at all, while 10% gain and only 10% lose weight. If you are training properly for a marathon you would usually be running 75 miles a week ( 3x race distance ) at least .

No way could you lose 5 stone by exercise alone, let alone by running only 15km a week , which probably burns 750 calories in total . That's not even a small kit Kat a day, is it?

Losing 5 stone is a tremendous , life changing achievement and you deserve a lot of credit for it. I'm sorry anyone is trying to take that away from you. Let alone someone close to you .

I wonder if she is trying to say " well i can't lose weight because I can't run /exercise because of my bad back /leg/heart condition /under active thyroid /whatever so it's not my fault " . Usually when people make these ignorant comments it's not about you, it's about them.

No wonder your DH tries to defend you

Thanks KristinaM, that's exactly why dh says she says it because she finds it hard to loose weight and running is something she wouldn't do so that must be the magic factor. 5k for me is about 300 calories so about a snickers bar, 3 times a week. Your comments are very kind, thank you Thanks
