In the middle of the road - so rural

Theonlyoneiknow · 29/04/2014 20:14

Seems like I have been running on the wrong side! I have been running on the left hand side!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 29/04/2014 20:36

5 miles run around Green, Hyde and St James's Parks after work. Plus a couple of extra miles walked because of the tube strike, and my usual cycle to and from the station. My legs hurt! Grin

TessTackle · 29/04/2014 20:41

Evening runners!
Managed 5 miles today, did day one of c25k which felt strange and then did some general running. 2 weeks off has made a massive difference and I feel like I've undone all the progress I made :( going out at least twice more this week so hopefully I can get back into my stride.

rusmum · 29/04/2014 20:50

Found road running sooo much easier than around the fields today, did 4.6 miles with fewer walks and at a faster pace Wink

briteside · 29/04/2014 21:00

Hello all!

Some brilliant running - well done all.

I do feel very Urban though, reading about which side of the roads some of you run - I am firmly on pavements or paths in parks!

ohoneohtwo our office has just moved to central london and I cannot WAIT for lunchtime or after work runs through the parks. I am working from home during the tube strikes but am already looking on Runkeeper for some routes. Any suggestions?

How often do you all run? Do you have rest days and (if so) how many in a week?

Sirzy · 29/04/2014 21:04

I try to run 3 times a week, sometimes its more sometimes its less though. Everytime I get into a good routine life gets in the way!

I tend to run mon pm/tues am, thurs am, Saturday parkrun and Sunday.

pootlebug · 29/04/2014 21:28

Sirzy I did the Manchester 10km many years ago pre kids. It was fun, and there was a huge range of abilities. I think 'big' events are much easier than small ones - safety in numbers or something. I am dreading being right at the back of a small triathlon I'm doing, whereas I'm really looking forward to the big ones.

In answer to the 'how often do you run' question I do a bit of a mix - a couple of 'proper' runs per week and then a short fast one (5km max), and/or an in-the-gym short interval one on a treadmill. But I'm triathlon training so I do swimming and cycling too. I'm faster than I've ever been at running and I think mixing up the sports helps for that - increasing overall fitness without over-taxing the same muscles.

PotPourri · 29/04/2014 21:32

Oh can I join? I'm a fair weather runner (do big distances when I am doing it). Would love to be in a virtual club to motivate me to be a regular runner Smile

Mitchy1nge · 29/04/2014 21:32

I tried not to have more than one day off from running in a row, so would rather do two consecutive runs and skip the day off than have two days of not running

however now am returning from injury caused purely and simply by overexerting myself Blush we shall see! I started on one of Galloway's marathon training plans today, it's in a book called 'lore of running' (not by him) which builds very carefully to (please please) injury-free running but begins with and uses quite a lot of his run/walk thing. Am doing 4 minutes of running and one of walking, it doesn't make me much slower than before (have always been slow) but does feel strange. You do this for fucking ages, weeks and weeks, before running continuously but hopefully by then my calf muscle won't suspect a THING. So that was 3 miles today, same again Thursday and then about 4.5 I think on Saturday or Sunday.

briteside · 29/04/2014 21:33

cinnamon How do you split speed/distance of runs across your schedule?

Like sirzy I need to fit runs in around life & kids, so often have to run two or 3 days in a row to get 3 or 4 runs in a week - but struggle to keep the energy levels up and find myself bone-tired-exhausted!

Interested in how others manage it?

Mitchy1nge · 29/04/2014 21:36

that's good to know pootle, am trying to do some cycling to slow the loss of fitness now am hardly running - not sure what is realistic to aim for, how much would help?

feetheart · 29/04/2014 21:45

I try and run 3 times a week, usually early mornings which is great for giving me a smug feeling all day :)

Keep meaning to go to my local running club as it's very close and I think I need a bit of a push to see how much faster I can run (competitive moi?) but I'm really not sure how to cope with running in the evening as I've never done it. I should just go shouldn't I?

Did 4.8 miles on Sunday in 49mins which was another PB (that age-grading is creeping up slowly :)) and plan to do about 3.5 tomorrow morning on my usual 'short run' route.

Sirzy · 29/04/2014 21:46

Pootle, that is what I am hoping - and that the crowd will help me through it!

Anyone any ideas for new thread title?

So Two days à week i dont do any exercise.

zombiesheep · 29/04/2014 21:50

Hi everyone, today I managed just over 6 miles in 56 minutes but I did stop a lot, I think I need a break :o

I've currently signed up for st Helena hospice midnight walk which is 7.5 miles and hopefully a 5k race for life if work allow me to have it off.

I'd like to fit a 10k in there somewhere but I can't find any close to me! Also need to join the running club at my gym on Tuesdays!

zombiesheep · 29/04/2014 21:51

I am also in the ballot for next years london marathon

RhondaJean · 29/04/2014 21:58

H wow a marathon.

My DH is what I count as a Proper Runner, 10k is probably his distance but he does half marathons sometimes (ran 13.1 miles for fun yesterday Envy) but a marathon seems such a long long way. I'm very very impressed.

I've decided to wait a couple of weeks and see whether I am picking up a bit in the time and then register. I'm quite enthusiastic and my legs are fine after last night, I went to my usual kettlebell class tonight without any issue (except my very tight back)

I have a doozer of a blister right on the side of my foot though, I will need to try an insole or tying my running shoes in a different way or something.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 29/04/2014 22:03

OMG 40,000! That's a lot of runners Shock

briteside plenty of options for running in town - either along the river/over the bridges (Waterloo bridge/South Bank and back over Lambeth, past the houses of Parliament and up the Embankment is nice, or you can extend by adding Blackfriars going east or Vauxhall going west Smile). Or St James/Green/Hyde Parks are all in a row - tonight I went into Hyde Park, followed the Serpentine most of the way and looped back, did a lap of Green Park and St James's Park. I did bump into a colleague on his way home which was a bit Blush, although he knows I'm a runner. Those are my routes because they are my neighbourhood Smile

Mitchy1nge · 29/04/2014 22:03

was supposed to be running in the Edinburgh marathon in under 4 weeks

and Berlin in 21 Confused am really not sure what to do about that, the program I started today is a 29 week sort of injury-proofing regime

I think I might be sensible and just build incredibly gradually back to the half distance and then try for a spring one next year?

zombiesheep · 29/04/2014 22:03

I genuinely don't think I'm going to be able to run it but my grandad just got diagnosed with cancer and now I really really want to run for this charity. It's kind of given me more of an incentive to get out there and do it and make everyone proud I'm doing okay though, if I push myself I can see me doing it! I've grown to love running and I was never the sporty type, always last in races, always last to be picked for team games.

Now I think I have found something I might actually be good at and this really makes me happy

feetheart · 29/04/2014 22:13

Sirzy - the other runners, the crowd and the whole event will definitely get you through. I did GNR last year with approx 56000 other people plus HORDES of local people cheering us on, feeding us oranges, custard creams and jelly babies. BRILLIANT, brilliant atmosphere inspite of cold wind and rain showers - I still get high thinking about it :o

zombie - me too, definitely, finally found something sporty I can do and enjoy. It takes some beating doesn't it?

Mitchy1nge · 29/04/2014 22:15

sorry to hear about your grandad zombie Flowers

I started running earnestly again when my friend was diagnosed with a Bad Cancer, it was something to do with all my grief and rage
