33 mins is my pb for 5K and I did a 10k around then too, in 72mins. You'll be fine :). I'm signing up for another 10k in July to give me something to aim for.

It's hard to judge what's "fast" I suppose! I feel so slow at Parkrun - I'm one of the last people to cross the line! You've spurred me on to get the 10k booked.

Not that speed is the main factor, obviously I'm after stamina, but was thinking that the time I do the 5k in might be an indicator of how fit I am at the moment.

Welcome new runners!

Enjoyed watching Mo on tv this morning, though I too was getting peeved by the commentators going on about how exhausted he was...he came 8th!!

Back on the treadmill for me today, rather than get lost around Manchester. It felt weird after three weeks of running outside, but I did 11k. I was momentarily excited by being able to run and watch tv at the same time, until I discovered that I could only watch BBC 1 and I just couldn't get excited about running and watching Songs of Praise!

I was really fed up when Brendon (Foster?) kept saying that if he wanted his advice Hmm then Mo should stick to what he knows. I felt quite annoyed at his negativity and was really pleased when Mo said that he would give it a second try. I mean he was completely out of his normal comfort zone and I thought he did amazingly well and was sensible not to completely overdo it to begin with.

I would LOVE it if he won next year!

It's true that Mo specialises in shorter distances but he did bloody well in his debut marathon, so bit silly to say he should stick to what he knows. I think people were expecting a bit much, saying he would win or beat the British record. It was his first marathon!

I found getting from 5k to 10k so much easier than couch to 5k. The hardest part of any run for me is the first couple of miles, then once you get past a few miles you get to that sweet spot where you still have loads of energy, you find your rhythm and your legs just go on autopilot. I want to get fitter so I can make that bit last longer Grin So don't think of it as running 5k twice, it doesn't feel like that at all.

That's what I thought! If coming 8th in your first marathon means you should still to 10k then I'm not sure what everyone else should do! I think he did amazingly well and really didn't expect him to win, 4 mins is a lot over that distance and these are people who run marathons all the time. I don't think he has anything to prove and if he never did another one he's still done really well.

On the 5-10k front I think it's doable in 6 weeks so July should be no probs. Once you can run 30 mins anymore is fine as long as you don't have any specific injuries. Just add am extra 1k a week to your longest run and you're there. I kind of maintain a 6 mile fitness and then build up 2 miles a week to the hm's I've done. I'm not an expert at all and haven't ever followed a plan, don't think I could have gone out and done 13+ miles having not run a lot like OhOneOhTwoOhThree did yesterday but it doesn't take long to build it back up. 10k is a great distance :)

I am thinking that running so far might not have been wise cinnamon. My sore bits (achilles and hip) are no worse than usual but I have some new sore bits to go with them today, especially my arms and the very tops of my legs GrinSmile

Cheered on my sister in the VLM yesterday...such a fab day for spectators as well as runners. Just ace.

I'm going to work on v short, v hilly runs during the next few weeks, we live at the top of a 1:4 hill and I'm thinking if I can run down it then back up (total distance 1.5 miles) then I won't be gone long so the kids will be ok at home on their own (11 and 9 years) and the intensity of the climb back will really push on my fitness. That's the plan anyway!

My shoulders always hurt when I run over 8 miles but they're fine as soon as I stop running. I do think I need to think about nutrition as I think a lot of my tiredness could be helped by something to eat! I did run on an empty stomach yesterday which isn't the brightest plan!

Cinnamon -I used to get a lot of pain in my shoulders when I was running, in between my shoulder blades. Until I changed my bra from a shock absorber run bra to an enell. The weight of my generous norks was obviously pulling on the top strap of the shock absorber .

I have just done my long run in the highland sunshine so I thought I would make you all jealous ....

Beautiful!!

Mine is right in my shoulders and the very top of my arms, I try and run a bit with my arms dangling down to loosen them and consciously try to relax which helps temporarily. I no longer have boobs that will weigh anything down :(

am going to try doing naked running (ie no garmin) for a while, for one thing garmin is not back from yesterday's marathon yet and who knows where the old one is?

it is absurd how anxious I feel about going round a couple of fields without it, but it will free me from the misery of knowing how slow I am

Decided to join the new thread for a bit of support. After a fantastic summer last year, with 10k, 10 mile and HM, which I loved, I've really struggled over the winter and have been back and forth to physio and chiropractor with ligament injury and Runner's Knee. Got some orthotic insoles now that are meant to help but it takes a while to break them in apparently.
Am still running 2 x per week as I love it, don't want to stop and also need to keep off the lbs. Did a 10k last Sunday (6th), then felt stiff and achy in the knees all week so swam, cycled etc but didn't run again until parkrun on Saturday when I limped round :( normally do my long run on a Sunday but legs not up to it so cycled yesterday instead.
Anyone else come back after knee problems?

I could never run without my Garmin. I've almost become too reliant on it! but it would be too easy for me to say ah I'll head back now having only done a couple of miles

I don't know what I'll gain by running without it as am still going to manually log it in garmin connect - at this stage am ecstatic to be running at all to be honest - but I did one of my old trusty 5k routes three times, once walking, once running with dogs (one ate a WHOLE live rabbit yuck) and once on a horse

talking of running on empty my friend ran london marathon yesterday in a fasted state, and a bit quicker than the pace we were aiming to do Edinburgh in together - it's important for ultra runners to get used to not having fuel apparently

I think there are good arguments for and against, it's supposed to improve your endurance isn't it but it does mean you will run more slowly than you could with carbs on board
