My shins stopped hurting after I stopped running and are fine when I do the 30 day shred. Thank you I will try and get some fitted running shoes.

Blatherskite · 28/04/2014 21:34

I had my first ice bath the day after my last half marathon on the advice of one of my nutter-multiple-marathon-running friends. It doesn't have to be ice, just as cold as you can manage but I still found myself hardly able to breathe as I sat down in it! I got used to it after a few minutes though and it wasn't so bad. It definitely helped with the soreness too.

Blatherskite · 28/04/2014 21:36

Shin pain only when running is most likely shin splints Amelia. Proper shoes should help and then gentle runs while your body adapts.

thefemaleJoshLyman · 28/04/2014 21:38

Hello all, been away for a bit. This thread has moved so fast that I can't keep up!

Had to stop running for a bit and was too sad to come on here. Strange lower calf/Achilles pain/discomfort. Was really frustrating, have missed nearly 10 days of running Sad. Just feel flabby and want to get back into it but know I might have to do it slowly. Starting to feel better now, perhaps another couple of days off...

On a positive note, my family have bought me a Garmin Forerunner 10 as an early birthday present to help me train for my HM, my birthday is not until September so it is rather early but September wouldn't be much good for an October marathon. Just can't wait to try it.

rusmum · 28/04/2014 21:38

Hi cinnamon!!!!! You are a shining example of what perseverance can achieve? Wink

AmeliaToppingLovesShopping · 28/04/2014 21:40

I had read about shin splints and that's why I stopped, they sound painful.

There is a specialist running shop fairly close to where I live so will pop in there and ask to be fitted. thanks.

QOD · 28/04/2014 22:01

How have I missed this thread?
Been running since last Jan, go 3/4 times a week. 2 x 5 to 6 miles and 1 or 2 speed sessions
I'm still short fat n slow though Grin

yegodsandlittlefishes · 28/04/2014 22:21

Wondered where you'd gone, thefemaleJoshLyman sorry to hear you've been in discomfort and pain. I had something a bit like that a few months ago and was only comfortable in walking boots for a while and could bear my running shoes on. Sad No idea what caused it.

Welcome QOD!

thefemaleJoshLyman · 28/04/2014 22:21

Anyone on Garmin Connect? Is there a MN group?

Sirzy · 28/04/2014 22:24

Qod.

Short fat and slow describes me perfectly too!

Mitchy1nge · 28/04/2014 22:29

thefemalejosh - yes! it's called team mn connection

I think it's set so anyone who wants can just waltz in and admire our latest activities but am not sure, garmin connect went a bit odd during the last upgrade

thefemaleJoshLyman · 28/04/2014 22:38

Doesn't seem to like me Sad

I get a picture of a puma(?) and then an error message when I click to request an invitation, so I guess it is not working at the mo Mitchy

Mitchy1nge · 28/04/2014 22:42

it says you are a member?

but your privacy settings have to be relaxed a bit to your connections and groups I think

thefemaleJoshLyman · 28/04/2014 22:54

All sorted Mitchy thank you! I have a friend!!!! Grin

Impressed with your activity you seem to be very busy. Smile

RhondaJean · 28/04/2014 22:55

Can I join you lot?

I've barely run at all since my leg injury last year,my trainer made me go out and run last week and tonight I've gone and done 5k(walk/jog but al, the same). It took 38 minutes but I wasn't completely done in so I am really happy!

However I'm now sat with ice on my left calf which had a pain I thought had run off until I cooled down and I have a huge blister on my right sole - but it was worth it.

I'm thinking of signing up for a 5k o. June12th what do you reckon?

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 28/04/2014 23:04

Do any of you belong to running clubs? Just wondering if there's any point joining one.

Sirzy · 29/04/2014 05:56

Go for it Rhonda!

lazypepper · 29/04/2014 07:32

Ooh yes, sign up RhondaJean - it's a good few weeks away - and a good motivation to carry on.

Anyone tried Gap running capris/leggings? They have some on sale at the mo?

I do need new pants- but always end up in Sports Direct for the cheapos.

lazypepper · 29/04/2014 07:34

No, SoftKitty but I also have been considering it.

Depends how you like to run I guess. A friend's husband does loads of marathons - but has always just run alone. Others find it helpful to have a group environment.

I get a bit bored running alone sometimes. I have running buddies and it does mnake the time pass more quickly if there is a lot of chatting going on ;)

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 29/04/2014 08:07

Despite the vile weather I have packed running gear so I can run after work this afternoon. I have probably picked a bad day to try to run in central London with the transport strike, but I can blame the crowds for slowing me down Grin

Blatherskite · 29/04/2014 08:33

Up until recently I was a member of 2 running clubs! It's only because I can't get to the sessions of one now DH has changed his job that I'm not still a member of 2.

I joined at the end of the Summer before last when the evenings were getting darker and running by myself in the evenings once DH got home from work was getting a bit scary. I love being a member of the club now and hardly ever run alone any more.

For me there are loads of reasons why I love being a running club member -

  • I don't have to run alone in the cold, dark and wet in winter. Better from a person safety perspective and also from a motivation perspective. This works in Summer too obviously but is definitely more keenly felt in Winter.
  • I don't have to plan routes and think about where I'm going - the run clubs plan a variety of routes which change round regularly and all I have to do is follow. It means I've seen bits of the city which I never knew about and the fear of taking a wrong turn and getting lost are relieved. My sense of direction is awful.
  • I don't get bored on long runs. I hate running alone for hours. Plodding along chatting to friends is much nicer.
  • I get challenged. It's that end of parkrun thing where you pick someone ahead of you and try to keep up/overtake them - but with every run if you want it. I've become a lot faster since running with a club.
  • Variety of training. If I were alone, I would probably just run, maybe up a hill or two if you're lucky. With the clubs I've done Farlek sessions, intervals, proper hill sessions and track running amongst others. Plus, with people to run with/against, I tend to push myself harder.
  • Most running clubs have a discount worked out with the local running shops which is handy
  • I have made a huge amount of friends by joining the club and finding people with similar interests. Only yesterday, I was laughing because the new Facebook "people you may know" was full of pictures of people in running gear. I've gone from being a fairly lonely SAHM to someone with a fairly busy social calendar as my club is definitely a "drinking club with a running problem" sometimes Grin
lazypepper · 29/04/2014 08:36

blatherskite your running club sounds fab.

especially this bit "drinking club with a running problem"

:)

Chopstheduck · 29/04/2014 09:20

I keep thinking about running clubs, but feel too slow to join one! Yours sounds fab, blathers!

3.75 miles this morning. It was hard though, still a bit sore from the weekend, and didn't really get into it til the 3 mile mark, but then had to stop and behave as today was supposed to be a shorter run. Going to get showered, put another set of sports kit on and cycle to Windsor before it rains.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 29/04/2014 09:39

Oh I love the idea of a "drinking club with a running problem" Grin

I have been giving some thought to joining a running club for the winter months, but have always had it in my mind that I'd be far too slow!

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 29/04/2014 09:48

Thanks Blatherskite. I love the sound of a running club but like Chops I'm concerned I'd be too slow and unable to either keep up with them, or wouldn't be able to run the same distance that they do. I'm a compete beginner - might look into it further in a month or two when I've hopefully improved a bit.
