Sorry blathers - two different friends - one did the PB 10k, the other did the HM distance!

kato I can understand you being a bit Hmm at her saying she "ran" the 10 miles but at least she finished in one piece and yes, maybe she'll take up running properly now.

welcome officelady!

KristinaM · 27/04/2014 22:48

Well that's good news, I was worried she might get ill or injured.

I wouldn't worry about her saying she ran it, I think most people know that 3 miles per hour is walking pace

Lily311 · 28/04/2014 05:14

Morning,

This thread moves fast. I went for a 6k run on Friday with my cousin, swimming on Saturday and did 4k on treadmill yesterday. Going out at 8 for a run, booked babysitter so no turning back I guess.

What's your favourite music to listen to while running? I need inspiration.

officelady · 28/04/2014 06:36

Lily I listen to the sound of my own laboured sweaty breathing! I definitely need to sort out a playlist, at the moment I'm running with my headphones in one ear only because I'm paranoid about getting run over by a car or a bicycle (or even an elderly lady with a shopping trolley!). And I haven't put any music on, I just have my MapMyRun app telling me my pace & distance every so often. Now that I'm a proper runner Wink I think I can have music, yes?
Is there any way to match music to your pace? According to my app, my pace is all over the place from one minute to the next, but I can't really tell when I'm running, I just keep putting one foot in front of the other. If I had music which kept a steady rhythym I reckon it would help enormously.

cinnamongreyhound · 28/04/2014 07:13

I stopped listening to music while I trained for a half marathon in November as I wasn't allowed any in the race. I found I actually preferred it, no strings everywhere, emptied my brain more and listened to everything around but I mostly run in the forest. My phone has a speaker so I can hear endomondo with pace updates without them too. Some have a specific playlist based on their personal pace, some have inspiring tracks, some just songs that they've run well to before.

MelanieCheeks · 28/04/2014 07:21

Morning all! Was a ParkRun tourist on Saturday (and have started a blog on the various ones I have/ plan to visit). Nice recovery run on Sunday, and am off to Portugal today. But I'm packing my running gear, as I'm in a relay team in next Monday's Belfast Marathon, so I need to keep up the training.

I have a playlist of running racks, more for their inspirational uplifting feel than for the pace. Faves are daft Punk "Harder Faster Stronger", JLS "Billion Lights", Seal "Amazing", and Sam Sparo "Black and Gold".

Blatherskite · 28/04/2014 08:12

officelady If you google running music you can usually find websites which will help you work out which BPM you run at and will then list songs which a close to that speed. I used to pick my favourites from the list going from the right BPM to a bit quicker to make my play list.

As cinnamon says though, a lot of races will ban headphones on runs so while it's good for training, it can be a pain if you come to rely on music when running. I was reading the instructions for the Silverstone 10k I'm doing next week and they state that anyone wearing headphones can be disqualified. It's a safety thing. When out on the club run yesterday, 1 lady was wearing headphones and couldn't hear everyone around her shouting "keep left" when a bike came through. Someone got her out of the way in time but she was totally oblivious

Would love to see your blog melanie (although I hope you've not used capitals in the word parkrun all the way through it! Wink) I love parkrun tourism and will be doing a bit myself over the next few weeks. Wonder if we'll be anywhere near each other?

Morning all!

You have all had a v busy weekend, but thankfully my jealousy is no more.
I did parkrun on Sat, and (in spite of a bit of a hangover) got 29.08. And my knee feels fine yay!
Yesterday went back to where I do my parkrun, but this time with friends and DP and DS and did a lot of walking with my 2stone DS on my back Smile - knee still ok, so I'm going to go for a little run in a bit!

lazypepper · 28/04/2014 10:16

Gosh, this thread is fast moving. I couldn't read all the pages.

:)

Had a great run at the weekend. Was in Brighton - and luuuurved my 5km along the seafront. So nice to have a change of scenery.

It's made up my mind to definitely sign up for the Brighton Half in Feb.

cinnamongreyhound · 28/04/2014 11:09

Great news ThursdayLast!

ThursdayLast · 28/04/2014 11:11

5 miles Grin
I feel great!

cinnamongreyhound · 28/04/2014 11:11

I love the sea too lazypepper! I have never run by the sea as when we were on holiday last year I was injured so I couldn't run :(

Mitchy1nge · 28/04/2014 11:23

how are people who are half asleep meant to keep up with this thread?

sounds like some great runs over the weekend :)

am going to start one of the galloway plans I think, although will feel STUPID walking for a minute every 3 or 4, have read some mixed reviews but enough to see it could be an injury-proofing alternative to Normal Running

is annoying that Monday is always a day off

Blatherskite · 28/04/2014 11:37

Yay Thursday! Well done :)

If you did that at your local, that's even more impressive! Your parkrun is hard.

Chopstheduck · 28/04/2014 12:32

I hate the idea of running without music, I'm not sure I would want to listen to my own panting for an hour or so! I have yurbud running headphones which are designed not to fall out and also allow ambient noise in so I can still hear noise around me providing I don't turn them up too loud. I'm currently listening to the Now That's What I call Running 2014 album on runs.

Mitchy1nge · 28/04/2014 12:34

I can't run with music

I wish I could because scant opportunity to listen to stuff I like these days

CQ · 28/04/2014 12:49

Afternoon all, what a busy weekend everyone's had. Mostly great times, some disappointments and some aches and pains - pretty much sums up running, doesn't it?

I've just been out with my running group - first session since before the holidays. We did about 4.5 miles mixed in with 120 lunges, 120 squats, six sprint intervals and a bloody big hill Shock

I was seriously regretting those Easter eggs!

I am sitting here at my desk feeling myself seizing up - time for a hot shower and some stretches.

cinnamongreyhound · 28/04/2014 13:21

I was the same chopstheduck but I love it now. I used to run with only one to hear background noise but the idea of running a race and getting disqualified was enough to stop me. Although during the hm that I stopped because of, I passed at least 4 people with headphones in.

ThursdayLast · 28/04/2014 13:38

Thanks Blathers! And cinnamon too!
Just so you don't think I'm some kind of super woman, I did not, repeat not carry DS around the parkrun course hahahaha. That really would be crazy behaviour.

I listen to podcasts when I run alone at home, but when surrounded by other people like during parkrun I don't. I'm not sure why really, feels a bit rude almost...

Just come back from taking the dog out and I've only gone and split my big toe open! Don't think it's too bad, but it was on the same bit of road I nearly fell over on and hurt my knee...cursed???

Theonlyoneiknow · 28/04/2014 16:15

Hi Everyone!

Managed my (longish) weekend run but Endemondo lost signal again. It's sooo annoying. DP doesn't understand why I got vexed about it!

At least it keeps signal on my Tuesday night runs home from work. Managed to do it 3 mins quicker last week so was pleased! I really like the time and pace updates each km.

Does a Garmin lose signal like a phone app would?

I always run with music (dance music all the way - Leftfield, House Anthems, Daft Punk, Ministry of Sound Mash Up Mixes etc !) but am looking for new headphones (not those small in ear ones though as they keep falling out) any suggestions? Would you recommend the yurbud ones you have chops ??

A friend ran the Highland Fling race at the weekend - 53 miles in 13.5hrs!

I didn't know some races banned headphones! (not that I've entered any races yet - not sure if I am a social runner or not?!!!)

KristinaM · 28/04/2014 16:21

Hi all

Impressive amount of running going on this weekend. Must be the spring weather .

I've just done my final Long run of 16 miles in traing for my HM next month. I've now done race distance or over 6 times, so I know I can run for that far. But I've still no idea if I can do it at target pace, rather than the 40 sec slower pace I've been doing for the long runs.

Ho hum, I guess I just have to trust the programme. Only a week of poepr training before I start to taper. It's very tempting to add in an extra week but I'm, stick to the plan , as I have a 10km race in 2 weeks .

Blatherskite · 28/04/2014 16:28

Which plan did you use Kristina? I'm thinking I might try some proper training before my next HM :)

I've got an ache in the bottom of my left foot and have managed to convince myself that it's the onset of Plantar fasciitis so I'm having a couple of days rest before my relay on Wednesday and then will see how it feels. I've got the Silverstone 10k next week which I won't really train for as I do 10k+ most weeks so I'm confident I can at least get round but I'd rather do it comfortably than in pain.

KristinaM · 28/04/2014 16:53

Blathers -I used the second one on this page.

As you can see, it's quite short at 10 weeks.and you get a recovery week every 2-3 weeks.

But I did a base phase of about 11 or 12 weeks in which I did lots of long slow distance to get my mileage up to 40miles per week . I needed to build up gradually as I was only running about 10 miles per week at Christmas .

Also I'm very old and this my is first HM so I wanted train up slowly and hopefully remain injury free.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 28/04/2014 17:22

Can I please join you all? I've started C25k several times in the past - the last time being about a year ago - but never finished it Blush. I've wanted to get back into running for a while so on Sunday DS (7) and I did a short run of just under 2 miles, interspersed with some walking when I he got tired. This morning I went out for a longer run and managed 5k in 40 mins. I know it's slow but I'm pretty pleased with it, especially as it's only my second run Smile.

What's the best way to better my time and build up my distance, please? I'll be doing short runs at the weekend with DS (single parent so he has to come with me) and longer runs maybe twice a week when he's at school or I can get childcare.

Also, what's the best app for logging/tracking runs? I have an iPhone & iPad (no iPod). Do you all carry your iPhones with you on a run? How do you time yourself? Today I just looked at the kitchen clock before I left and again when I got back Grin.

KristinaM · 28/04/2014 17:37

There's a timer on your iPhone. And there are apps that you can download -I'm sure a techie person will be along soon to recommend some

I run with my phone but listen to podcasts, not music.

And congratulations on starting running again
