support sorry to hear about your run, I agree with others who said to just be careful. It could be a case of doing too much too soon.

Having said that, I think that all runners have days where nothing works, everything hurts and you can barely manage a fast walk. (Or is that just me?) I remind myself that a short-horrible run is better than none.

I also have those horrid-run days when I am coming down with a cold or bug.

Try taking a day (or two) off and seeing how you feel then. Hope it eases soon.

supportworker · 27/04/2014 17:01

My whole family have a cold at the moment, you are worrying me now!

I am going to see how I feel on Tuesday, if my legs are still aching like they have the last two days I will leave it, if not I will be back out there, even if it is just for a 3k walk.

Oh some hilarious jokers decided to hurl abuse at me out of a white van while I was running too. I couldn't make out what they said but general abuse at a fat girl running. It did make me feel a bit bad but lets face it, says far more about them than about me.

yegodsandlittlefishes · 27/04/2014 17:20

supportworker white van idiots hurling abuse are just jealous because they are stuck in their dead end jobs and on their way to pick up their big macs. Forget em.

Apologies for repeating myself...I used to find running incredibly difficult and it resulted in horrible stiffness, totally out of proportion to the distance I had covered or the speed I managed. I lost a lot of weight and it helped a little, but not that much. Even walking would be hard sometimes. Eventually found I was hypothyroid and that also caused me to be anaemic (which affects muscles and oxygen) and that I need extra iron for exercise. No idea if that is relevant to you, but hypothyroidism is very common, and usually relatively easy to treat, as is anaemia.

If it is just that you have been out every day for the last 7 days and done fast 3k- 5k runs without any walking, it is probably minor muscle damage and you just need to rest and let the muscles recover and then pace yourself and give your muscles more time off between runs to build up strength.

If you get a virus, many doctors advise to give it a couple of weeks at least after you are better, before you run.

supportworker · 27/04/2014 17:48

I have been out every other day, rather than every day :)

I actually have an appointment at the doctors next Friday and one of my main questions is whether I can have my thyroid tested.

So we will see!

I imagine I will lose weight with the running though it is not my main objective, I am not going to weigh myself or get all upset about it, I am running to do a half marathon for my friends wheelchair, any weight I loose will be a happy side effect!

yegodsandlittlefishes · 27/04/2014 18:18

Yes, you can have your thyroid tested, and hopefully they will test a range of other things too, and you'll get some answers.
Good for you, raising money for your friend's wheelchair. Grin Brew

originalpiratematerial · 27/04/2014 18:24

supportworker it sounds as if you're doing brilliantly Smile. Ignore the white van idiots Angry. I hope the stiffness eases soon. I think you just have to listen to your body.

I did nearly 9 miles today. Well, Endomondo recorded 4.46 miles before I turned for home, but for some reason the total distance there and back only appeared to be 8.7 miles Hmm. As nobody has moved my house, I'm considering this to be an almost 9 mile run Grin. Although I was like a zombie by the end (that's the furthest I've ever run, last week's long run was 8.5 miles).

yegodsandlittlefishes · 27/04/2014 18:29

That's over 14km originalpirate Grin Well done!

supportworker · 27/04/2014 18:34

Yes I want a full check because obviously I will be pushing myself quite hard in the next few months preparing for the half marathon!

I still can't believe I am doing it but I know I have to because he can't

it really is that simple

briteside · 27/04/2014 18:36

Wooohoo! Just got back from a brilliant (almost) 7km run, 45mins. It was one of those runs where it all just came together and I felt like I maintained a nice pace & decent form. That will keep me going for a day or two Grin

support I agree with yegod on the muscle damage. When the damaged muscle rebuilds itself, it becomes stronger than before - I keep telling myself this whenever I have stiff muscles after a tough run! Definitely worth getting yourslef checked at the GP's though.

Don't you HATE those twats who hoot / shout when you are running? I had my first one today...

Blatherskite · 27/04/2014 18:39

I did 8.7 miles today too pirate. It was obviously today's distance :)

I do have a long run headache now though Sad I know I'm hydrated so it must be salt and sugar that I need.

supportworker · 27/04/2014 18:49

I think the big mac analogy is probably a good one!

Congratulations on your 7km run! 45mins is great time too!

Chopstheduck · 27/04/2014 19:25

Sw, take the break and I'm sure you will feel better soon.

Ignore the twats. I was 4 stone heavier when I started beginning of last year. You are RUNNING though, be proud!

I cycle a lot too, and once had an idiot lean out of a car window and slap my arse as he went by. Lucky I didn't end up under his car!

originalpiratematerial · 27/04/2014 19:37

Thanks yegods!

Blathers, yep maybe 8.7 miles was today's distance! Hope your headache clears soon. I had a rotten stiff neck but I think that was because ds1 dragged menout to do gardening with him after my run (he's the original biddy kiddy). Just had a hot bath in radox (the old style powder stuff). That helped.

Blatherskite · 27/04/2014 20:04

pirate We'd gone out for a 1hr 20 minute run so the distance wasn't set and depended on your speed and how many run backs you needed to do. Some people covered 6 miles and some people did 10!

DeterminedMama · 27/04/2014 20:31

Went out for another run today. Same distance as my last run but shaved a few seconds off and felt stronger so I'm happy!

originalpiratematerial · 27/04/2014 20:47

blathers I will not tell you how long it took me to run 8.7 miles but suffice to say it was a lot longer than 1 hr 20 mins Grin

Blatherskite · 27/04/2014 21:11

This is the problem with choosing a run leader as your buddy!

We all met up the the car park at the beginning and she said "we'll run together". It was hard work

originalpiratematerial · 27/04/2014 21:22
Grin

I am a solitary runner and I like it [anti-social git]

originalpiratematerial · 27/04/2014 21:23

I post on another very small online running group and one of my friends on there did a PB 10 k in 57 mins today AND was 6th in her category. And another did 13 miles (she only started running less than a year ago. So I feel comprehensively outdone Grin.

officelady · 27/04/2014 21:36

Hello .... can I join in? You seem like a friendly bunch Smile
I started the couch to 5k plan to give me something positive to focus on after I suffered a miscarriage in March, and today I went out for my very first 5k run. It took me 34 mins 38sec. I feel like I can now say "I am a runner" Grin
I'm unbelievably slow but hoping that my pace will improve if I keep at it. Have downloaded the Runkeeper App and signed up to their 16 week 10k training plan. Can't imagine ever being able to run that distance (and am in awe of you marathon/half-marathon runners!) but 7 weeks ago I couldn't even run for 30 seconds without feeling like I was going to die, so I'm hoping baby steps will get me there!

Blatherskite · 27/04/2014 21:41

The 10k I could do pirate (my PB is 56:45) but definitely not the half marathon tacked on afterwards!! I can barely manage a half on it's own!

Welcome officelady. 34 minutes is a brilliant time for a first 5k! I was looking at my first parkrun results the other day trying to work out how long I'd been going and my very first times were 36/38 minutes and I'd been running for a few months by the point! You're doing really well and this thread is full of good advice should you need it.

Standingonlego · 27/04/2014 21:43

officelady welcome!

Under 35 minutes for your first 5k is absolutely brilliant especially as you only started 7 weeks ago :) Hope the 10k plan goes well. Getting to that first 5k is the hardest bit, it does get easier from here!

KatoPotato · 27/04/2014 21:54

Hi guys! Thought I'd update about my 10mile friend...

She did it, bless her, in just under 3hrs...

She got moved off the road but she did it...

But she is saying that she 'ran it' which annoys me a bit...

Blatherskite · 27/04/2014 22:01

Wow! I was totally expecting you to come back and say that she'd been picked up in the back of the sweeper car by 3 miles. Good on her!

Maybe she'll take up running properly now.

Sirzy · 27/04/2014 22:02

Good on her for doing it. Hopefully she keeps it up!

Hello everyone else, lost track with the thread a bit with it being so busy but hope everyones running is going well!
