All parkrunners are welcome here!

What cinnamon said. If you've just started your HM plan, it's all about getting the distance in . It's not unusual for people to do their long run in two parts eg an hours run to work and and hours run home

There are supposed to be some training benefits to running on tired legs .

originalpiratematerial · 06/06/2014 17:33

Thanks ever so, Kristina and cinnamon!

I was doing well on HM training up until about six weeks ago, had got my long run up to 9 miles, then kind of let it slide for various reasons so I'm starting again Smile.

originalpiratematerial · 06/06/2014 17:34

That looks great, OhOne!

KristinaM · 06/06/2014 17:51

Pirate - before I did my HM training programme proper, I did a 10 ish week base phase, when i built up my mileage gradually . I think this helped me not get injured when I started the programme , as I was already doing about 40 miles per week . So adding in the speed work wasn't so hard

So your doing part of the programme , then stopping , sounds like something similar . I'm sure it will help you a lot.

originalpiratematerial · 06/06/2014 19:26

Thanks kristina - gosh, 40 miles a week - that's pretty awesome! How did that break down - how many runs and what distances? At the moment I'm kind of struggling to think how id fit that in around work and caring for a DS with severe autism (and spending sometime withy other two sons). Did you get up incredibly early?

LollipopViolet · 06/06/2014 19:30

My local parkrun is officially lovely - I sent them a message on FB as I'd quite like to buddy up with someone for my first go, and they've said if I give them some warning of my first run, they'll try to find someone to come with me :) They also said they have a few jog/walk/jog types so hopefully I should be fine.

Anyone have any advice?

Standingonlego · 06/06/2014 19:50

OhOne just looked at your map, my friend got married at Sewerby Hall a few years ago, it was lovely Smile. Enjoy your run!

KristinaM · 06/06/2014 22:15

Pirate -I didn't get up early as it was in January /February and it's dark here til 730am -I run on unlit country roads so only run in daylight.

It's much easier now as I can run after DH comes home from work .

I'm lucky that I only work part time, so I can fit it in around work /kids . I usually run aftre dropping the kids off ( slightly early ) at school , sometimes while waiting for DS at his sports club ( 2 nights a week ), as long as DH is at home otherwise I have to take the other kids as well .

During the base phase , I ran about 10-15 km three times during the week and a longer run and Parkrun plus a bit extra at the weekend. All my runs were very slow, I'd walk up hills if it was too hard.

You are not allowed to run fast during the base phase , apparently it's someone thing to do with aerobic vs anaerobic fitness and fast twich and slow twitch muscle fibres .

If you google " long slow distance " you will find the science bit .

It was good for me as I'm quite old, have a bad back and hips and am very risk averse .

I don't know how I woudl fit it in if I worked FT, as DH works away a lot . running helps keep me sane , I tell myself it's not a luxury though it feels a bit self indulgent sometimes.

It's hard taking time for yourself . I feel guilty. Then I hear of parents ( usually men ) who work full time, go out with the boys one night a week , then spend most of the weekend at " their football " or " their golf " Hmm

KristinaM · 06/06/2014 22:25

Violet -that's a great idea, well done for Fb them.

My advice is to run really REALLY slowly. Then go just slightly faster each week. That way you can get a new Pb each week for months.

Remember to sign up for the free text alerts and emails.

You get an page online called Violets athlete history with your times and other details, best gender position, best time that year etc . It's very encouraging as you see your times improving

Blatherskite · 07/06/2014 07:21

Yey Violet. I'm glad they were helpful. We'd probably try to organise a buddy for someone that asked too. I'd probably even volunteer myself. I hope they find you someone on the day.

Advice?...Erm...Just go and have fun. Remember it's a 'run' not a 'race' and it really doesn't matter how fast you are. The only person you should be racing is yourself.

DON'T FORGET YOUR BARCODE.

Make sure if you pay for parking that you put enough in to be able to hang around and chat afterwards - half of the fun of parkrun is the community there and the opportunity to make new friends and meet up with them for a run and then a cake, a drink and a chat in the cafe afterwards.

So DS (and therefore DO and I) slept in til 8.30 this morning, and it takes me 25mins to drive to parkrun.
I'm not at parkrun today Sad but I did get a lie in Smile!

Hope you're all having a good day! Go PBs!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 07/06/2014 10:11

It was a lovely course, but hard work running into the wind along the cliffs, and the last couple of K were uneven, mostly up hill trail paths. So no PB but very enjoyableSmile

originalpiratematerial · 07/06/2014 10:25

Lovely, OhOne!

I don't think I got a PB either - it was really hot and muggy and the sun was actually shining just for parkrun - I was boiling and had to drop down to a walk a few times, as did several other people. But I did really enjoy it today - had a lovely chat with some people beforehand but couldn't hang about after as had to be home by 10 am. Then I had to sprint 50 m for the bus, otherwise I'd not have made it. I was so pouring with sweat when I got on the bus!

originalpiratematerial · 07/06/2014 10:31

Thanks Kristina - that's really interesting. i am trying to understand more about aerobic versus anaerobic fitness and burning sugar versus burning fat. I totally get what you say about many fathers not seeming to have many qualms, in general, about spending most evenings and a large chunk of weekends doing their own thing!

At one stage I was fitting in more running by running to and from work but I've cut that down a bit because all the hopping on and off pavements and dodging potholes and pedestrians and so on seemed to be putting a lot of strain on my legs. I have fewer niggles since I stopped. But then again I'm not running as much! Argh!

I think I just need to give up work. Where's that lottery win when you need it???

BUT I am off work and in Ireland for three weeks in the summer and although DH won't be there, my dear old dad is very supportive of this running lark and will keep an eye on my boys while I go run, so I should be able to get some good hilly miles under my belt then.

woundbobbin · 07/06/2014 10:42

Another wet parkrun for me today. I've been working away the last 2 days and dd was distraught when i left the house without her this morning. But I think I did a PB and i managed to keep my barcode dry enough to log the time. (I must must must buy the parkrun tags). They were handing out info re the local half marathon at the end it's not till October and I've not run it for a few years so feeling tempted. Has a anyone else trained for a half only running 3 times a week?
Well done everyone else

Knackerelli · 07/06/2014 11:33

Wasn't sure I'd go this morning as at 7 o'clock it was thundering and lightening with torrential rain! The parkrun god was smiling though as by 9am it had all stopped and the sun was even trying to peep through. Had a nice run and even remembered to count my laps so knew when to come in!

Blatherskite · 07/06/2014 11:50

First time back at my home parkrun in 2 months today for Running Wife's 100th. It sort of drizzled it down for most of the run but it was actually quite nice as it was really hot and muggy and the rain was cooling. Thankfully, we managed to finish and get into the cafe before it absolutely chucked it down and spent long enough eating bacon sandwiches and cake that it had stopped by the time we left.

No PB but then I'm saving myself for tomorrow :)

originalpiratematerial · 07/06/2014 11:52

Was thinking about you and your RW blathers - glad you had a nice time!

I did get a PB by a whole 3 seconds. That will have been my "sprint finish" (aka "desperate stagger").

KristinaM · 07/06/2014 12:19

Well done on new PB pirate . A PB is a PB, even if it's one second

And congrats to blathers runing wife on her 100th and finger crossed for tomorrow , blathers

I ran at a different ( flatter ) parkrun today and got a years best time, 15 secs faster than last week but sadly not a PB for that course . I couldn't quite keep up with the pacer :-(

My home run doesn't have pacers , even though it's much bigger. They definitely help me keep going when I'm flagging

But it was very hot and sunny, so much luckier than most of you trekking around in the rain

KristinaM · 07/06/2014 12:20

Bobbin -do let us know if you get your PB

woundbobbin · 07/06/2014 13:26

27.26 woohoo! Finally broke 28mins! GrinGrin

KristinaM · 07/06/2014 13:34

Well done!

originalpiratematerial · 07/06/2014 14:19

Congrats, wound - that's brilliant! Nice one Kristina Smile!

LollipopViolet · 07/06/2014 14:39

Apparently it stopped raining for my local parkrun this morning. Very annoying as I'd convinced myself it'd be too wet and awful to go, and therefore slept through it.

I will be going via the bus so can take all the time I want to have tea and breakfast in the cafe afterwards - yay!

Definitely going next week.

ThursdayLast · 07/06/2014 14:59

Well done Kristina and bobbin!
