As the first thread ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1948631-Is-there-a-general-running-thread? ) is now pretty much full time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who runs no matter how fast or slow or how long you run for to discuss all things running!

Well done Thursday :)

Wasn't too hot up here, just a nice temp slight breeze and clear skies - best weather I have ran in yet and loved it, plan of running as much as possible this week while the weather lasts

Me too, the sunshine just makes it so much better.
Also two enormous puddles that covered the whole road on a couple of my routes gave dried up! Spring MUST be on the way Smile

Sirzy · 10/03/2014 18:43

Always best when you don't have to jump puddles! I am waiting to be able to run on grass without getting covered in mud!

Wasn't it glorious running out there today Smile
I was out aiming for 18 miles but got 13 miles in & realised I was a. lost having taken a wrong turn & b. only had 10% battery left on my Iphone so rang DH as an SOS to rescue me before my phone completely died & he wouldn't be able to find me without my gpsShock

However, not a complete disaster as I did the 13 miles in 2 hours so on track for a sub 4 hr marathon plus I felt strong that I could keep going with my new fuelling strategy so it's all good Grin
I have now, finally, invested in a gps watch! What's rather embarrassing is I wasn't lost on some trail run somewhere in a forest or mountain but just in between manchester & stockport ShockShockShockShock I am NEVER allowed near trail runsGrin

Sirzy · 10/03/2014 19:01

ooh another northern runner!

I managed to get lost in the town I have lived since I was 2 today Blush must have been the day for getting lost!

Haha -it's the sun! Sent me a bit doolally!
I was so busy running along enjoying the beautiful sunshine & smiling at all the happy 'out in the sunshine' people I got confused Grin DH found me at tesco looking lost ?? I blame the unseasonable heat -that wouldn't have happened if it had been raining -I'm used to running in the rain!

Any one here doing a 10K Sunday?

Not sure how much running to do this week. Was thinking just an easy 5k Tuesday and Thursday. I don't want to risk an injury this close and when I go out at the moment I really have to reign myself in so thought it be best to stay well rested and hope the training benefit of the past few weeks comes through so I peak at the weekend!

zombiesheep · 10/03/2014 21:32

Hello everyone, my first time on the exercise topics and this is exactly the thread I was after.

I am hoping to run the marathon next year. So far I can run over 5k so I'm not doing too shabby. I am 19 and joined a gym to tone up and lose weight. At the moment my running is just done on the treadmill but hopefully tomorrow I'm going to get out and run :)

Just thought I'd say hi!

zombiesheep · 10/03/2014 21:33

Also those that run over 10/15 miles, do you stop and take breaks? I wish I was that fit

ThursdayLast · 10/03/2014 21:33

Hi zombiesheep,
Get outside while the weathers nice Grin

Sirzy · 10/03/2014 21:37

Jeregrette - no advice but that sounds sensible to me!

Hi Zombie! I much prefer running outside even when its raining I would rather run outside than on a treadmill!

cinnamongreyhound · 10/03/2014 21:38

The weather was fab Sunday but not great today here :(

Grin MrsFrankTurner!

I am Jeregrette but I did a half marathon two weeks ago so I shall stick with my normal weekly running as a 10k is a lot less than I've been training for iyswim but I am not one for following plans so you're probably right!

cinnamongreyhound · 10/03/2014 21:40

Hi Zombiesheep! I don't take breaks on longer runs but I know lots that will do and also practise their water/food stops too. Get outside it's fantastic!

zombiesheep · 10/03/2014 21:46

Thanks all, will I get to that stage then? Running with no breaks? Do you all run quite fast? I'm quite slow I think.

Sorry for all the questions :o

Definitely agree that running outside is better, a few years ago it was all I did! I do need a good app on my iPod to tell me how many miles I've done.

MerryBuddha · 10/03/2014 21:49

Woke this morning to legs desperate to be running!!! Unfortunately earliest opportunity was tonight in the dark, but it made me get my fast feet out (hate running in the dark on my own) 5k 24 minutes!!!

Legs still asking for more, so will try and fit in a run during my lunch break tomorrow!

Hi to Zombiesheep and waves to everyone else!!!

Sirzy · 10/03/2014 21:49

I use runkeeper to track my runs.

I run slow and not very far but I am out running and enjoying it and getting better with time

OP posts:
cinnamongreyhound · 10/03/2014 22:01

That's fab MerryBuddha!

I think it's personal preference zombiesheep, some of the people I run with have done loads of marathons and still stop regularly during training. I don't of I'm on my own but I will if the person I'm running with wants to. A bit further up thread quite a few of us were discussing pace, I tend to average 9-10 min per mile.

zombiesheep · 10/03/2014 22:51

That's what I do Sirzy I enjoy running and don't think of it as a race! Can't wait to get outside now!!

Thanks cinnamon I'll just see how far I get tomorrow and will check further back the thread!

Thanks all :)

cinnamongreyhound · 11/03/2014 12:03

Did a lovely 5.5miles at 6 this morning, first run on my own for absolutely ages! Also, a while ago when my dog was in season we were followed by a ridgeback several times, we met him today actually with an owner and I now have the guys number. He still doesn't see why he needs a collar and tag as he's microchipped which made me a bit Angry but he did say text him when she's in season again and he'll walk a different way Hmm

Jeregrette · 11/03/2014 21:23

That's a great time MerryBuddha. How long have you been running. I'd love to break 25 mins for 5k this year.

Went out for an easy 5k today after 2 days rest. Knee is aching a lot so I'm tempted to rest out the week until 10k on Sunday. I'll be gutted if I've peaked too soon and got myself a bad case of runners knee.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 11/03/2014 21:54

I hope to run tomorrow morning - there's more chance of it happening if I tell you all Smile

meerschweinchen · 11/03/2014 22:37

ohone that's why I first joined the thread! I feel once I've told people, I've got to do it! I still ache after my first run on Sunday. I'm looking forward to also being able to call it 'an easy 5k' or a 'lovely 5.5 miles!' But even when I'm fit, I'll never manage the times some of you are doing. I'm seriously impressed.

Sirzy · 11/03/2014 22:45

Hope your knee is better quickly jeregrette

Hello all. Have posted on the parkrun thread but thought I would ask here whether anyone has had this. I started running last summer, just doing parkrun each week, but did my first race in February, a 7km one, which I really enjoyed so have entered a few 10km races, the first of which is a week on Sunday. I ran 10km on Monday evening when I got in from work and although the run itself was fine I had a horrible stomach ache afterwards which came on about 10 minutes after finishing and lasted all evening. I still felt like I had indigestion the next morning. It felt like trapped wind but also a bit crampy and it was just really uncomfortable and completely ruined the good feeling I'd had from running that distance for the first time

It probably didn't help that I ate dinner about 20 minutes after getting in from the run which then just sat there waiting to be digested. I know I can't really eat much before running, and so only have a banana about an hour and a half before running in the mornings. When I ran on Monday at 6pm I hadn't eaten anything since lunch at 1.30.

I had been wavering about whether to sign up for a half marathon if the 10km went well, but I couldn't run that distance without having eaten more than a banana, and really don't want to feel rubbish for hours afterwards. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so how did you deal with it?

TwelveLeggedWalk · 12/03/2014 11:03

space I sometimes get bad stomach cramps after running as well, and absolutely cannot eat beforehand. I try and drink lots of water and eat bland carby things but it seems quite random when it comes and goes.

Just back from a nice 2 miles in the sun, fastest time yet, 9.30/mile average, with the second mile at 9.05. Getting quicker!
