As the first thread ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1948631-Is-there-a-general-running-thread? ) is now pretty much full time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who runs no matter how fast or slow or how long you run for to discuss all things running!

Oh yes, meant to say - bloke with buggy came second at our parkrun today.

cinnamongreyhound · 08/03/2014 22:28

We have a lady with a buggy who I have to say I'm glad is slower than me Blush don't knew how she does it though!

EauRouge · 09/03/2014 07:01

I don't know how he gets the buggy up that hill at the end, and then through all that mud.

I was looking forward to a run today but I woke up in the night with a very sore toenail :( So chiropodist for me tomorrow. DH is starting his new job tomorrow and the office is in the same unit as a chiropodist so I'll just book in there.

Fishandjam · 09/03/2014 07:08

Different route Eau. Congrats on your DH's new job!

Thursday, I'll definitely at least meet you for a post-run cuppa - thanks!

TheDietStartsTomorrow · 09/03/2014 07:08

Hi all, marking my place. I used to run and really enjoyed it. Then stopped for months and have only just started again. Doing a C210K plan at the moment but I hope I'll have done a half marathon by the end of the year.

orangeflutie · 09/03/2014 11:20

Hi all Just done 15 miles this morning in lovely sunshine. Was supposed to be 14 and a half but started off and realised I'd forgotten my water bottle so had to nip back for it lol. Very slow at end but glad I managed it anyway.

Interesting reading about sporty versus couch potato. I was never good at sport at school, usually picked last for teams. The only thing I enjoyed was tennis which I played a bit outside school. I've always been active though and did aerobics and gym and then treadmill running in my twenties. Went out for a road run one day after having my three dds and have never looked back. I've been hooked on running ever since despite a few injuries along the way. I'm not a fast runner though I tend to do about a 10 to 11 min mile. Is anyone here super fast?

EATmum · 09/03/2014 11:59

Like you orange I'm between 10-11 mins a mile. I did a trial half marathon run yesterday - very slow by the end but psychologically I know now that I can run the distance. Achy legs today, but relaxing Brew and off to the park in the sunshine with the kids shortly. Lovely!

Sirzy · 09/03/2014 12:00

I'm about 11 min miles at the moment. Much improved on the 14 min miles when I started though

NinetyNinePercentTroll · 09/03/2014 17:30

I can categorically say that I am NOT even remotely fast, orange. I am probably the slowest because I walk/run at the mo (due to training plan). I average about 12-13 mins/mile. More tortoise than hare. Maybe that should be running thread name...

NinetyNinePercentTroll · 09/03/2014 17:31

Sorry I meant maybe that shoud be my running thread username

Sirzy · 09/03/2014 17:45

today was a 10k race locally which was full before I realised I could have done it - entries open for next year next week, wonder if I will be able to do a sub 60min 10k by this time next year? Distance will be fine but time will be the challenge

OP posts:
Fishandjam · 09/03/2014 18:15

I'm not fast either 99%! Even less so for the next week or so, I suspect - majorly sore shins today after yesterday's parkrun efforts Sad. I'll give it a few days and see how things are, but I really hope they ease off as I don't want to lose fitness.

I'm an ex-couch spud, a PE dodger all through school. I did a few odd sports at uni (fencing mainly) but I wasn't any good, I just joined for the post-session beers.

Sirzy · 09/03/2014 18:33

oh no fish, hope they feel better soon

OP posts:
NinetyNinePercentTroll · 09/03/2014 18:46

I was a definite PE dodger at school, too. Of the lazy beanpole variety, i.e. my mindset was, "I'm a size 8, so why do I need to?". The health benefits and what years of doing nothing might actually be doing under the skin hadn't really occurred/concerned me. Fast forward a few number of years and I started to wonder. The unexpected endorphin and shopping side effects were a bonus.

Did you go a bit hard at your PR then or did you have a niggle in your shin that you've accidentally aggravated? Hope it recovers soon. Rest as much as possible and if you do have to go out (or start to feel better), stick to well spaced, gentle recovery runs and lots of anti-inflammatories, would be my advice.

NinetyNinePercentTroll · 09/03/2014 18:49

Actually, I'd just pop ibuprofen, smear a load of diclofenac gel on it and run as normal, but I do recognise that makes me a moron. Don't do that.

cinnamongreyhound · 09/03/2014 19:07

Welcome Thedietstartstomorrow!

I run usually 9-10min miles orangeflutie so not super quick.

Hope your shins are better soon Fishandjam!

I did a lovely 6 miles today, what a beautiful day! Greyhound was really knackered but whippet came home and chased a ball around the garden like a loon!

meerschweinchen · 09/03/2014 19:51

I went for my first run today! Ran for just over 20 mins and now ache quite a lot! Realise it's going to take me a long time to get properly fit again. It felt really good to be running again, but coming on here and realising that the rest of you are running up to 15 miles makes me feel a bit embarrassed at how little I can manage.

Sirzy · 09/03/2014 19:59

Don't be embarassed, everyone has to start somewhere! When I started I couldn't even run for 20 minutes. 5 miles is still my limit and I have only done that once!

OP posts:
NinetyNinePercentTroll · 09/03/2014 20:23

20mins is bloody good going for a first outing!

orangeflutie · 09/03/2014 20:25

Meers I don't usually run 15 miles, it's totally new territory for me. This time last year I would just do a couple of 4 mile runs a week so don't feel bad.

I'm having to push it at the moment and it's quite scary at times tbh.

TwelveLeggedWalk · 09/03/2014 21:04

Lost you all! Did 6 miles today which I'm so pleased about as i had a mental block at 4, with hills too.
Legs have basically stopped working after a day running round with the kids though!

Fishandjam · 09/03/2014 22:06

meers, I can only do about 5-6k before I run out of steam. And this time last year I could only run the distance between lampposts Grin

Well done on everyone's sunshine runs.

Eau, how's your toenail feeling?

Sirzy · 10/03/2014 10:04

5.75km done in 39 mins. Happy with that! Sub 30 5k may just be possible one day

OP posts:
ThursdayLast · 10/03/2014 17:00

7miles in 67 mins.
Glooooorious day for running down here, warm enough for me to feel thirsty whilst running for maybe the first time ever!

ThursdayLast · 10/03/2014 17:01

Well done sirzy!
Even more impressive in the heat today
(Comparative heat I mean, obviously!)
