Hello everyone, today I ran 5 miles! Took me a while... About 50 minutes?

I'm after some advice, I'd like to run the marathon next year I'm fit and want to continue getting fitter by running more etc, do you reckon I'll be able to do the marathon?

Those who have joined/are joining, how do we sign up? Is it easier to go through a charity? Do you have to be a part of a charity or can you run yourself? I'd like to be part of a charity but I don't know how I'd raise enough money!?

Any help would be great!!

My friend went from no running, OK-ish fitness to marathon in a year. I guess it's possible if you can commit to the training?

I did 7ish miles today, annoyed because i forgot to set my endemondo till about 15 mins into it. Was a beautiful day here and was home before it got too windy. Am now trying to do three runs à week, one 3, one 5 and one 7 miles long.

Have decided to treat myself to some new running kit as mine is on its last legs, any recommendations?

Fingers crossed for your gait analysis polkaspottydotty! If you attempted but didn't finish wouldn't your sponsors still pay up? Especially for such a good cause.

I personally think anyone can if you have to time and commitment to training zombiesheep and you have a great base to start from with 5 mile runs already. Depends on the marathon, the big ones like London are hard to get into and the charity places are easier to get but I understand they are around £2,500. There are tonnes of smaller marathons that don't fill up that are also much cheaper to enter and still the same challenge.

Dont have any marathon advice but would probably do a local ish one first. There is an annual ultra marathon here, 33 miles! Am glad it doesnt appeal to me!

I go to the gym about 4/5 days a week and have an active job so I'm thinking if I put the hard work in it should definitely be doable. I'm going to keep tabs on this thread as to how people build up and increase their runs :)

zombie - I ran a marathon last year (and said never again, but have serious marathon envy for friends who are running tomorrow). If I can, anyone can.

I followed a 20 week training plan, which was based on you being able to run 3 miles 2 or 3 times a week before you started the 20 weeks. It built up gradually, and I stuck to it religiously. I finished in 5 hours, which was what I set out to do. Someone said to me afterwards that the achievement was not so much running the marathon, but all the time and effort which went into the training.

That's a good point really so much goes into the build up for an event that it is as much a part of the stuff as the event itself. I was thinking similar about this 10k I am doing it's not about the day itself so much as the change needed to get there at all!

I am really motivated today by the Marathon.

Just seen an 86 year old woman on the TV- no excuses for me anymore.

I have 50 years on her and still struggle doing 5k.

I have stood at the start every year for the last 6 (apart from this year where I watched on telly as we're away) saying I'd love to do it but I couldn't. Reading 'Running Like a Girl' really made me think....if she can do it maybe I can too. I'll be entering the ballot definitely. Considering whether to enter Brighton as a back-up plan so that I can definitely do a marathon next spring one way or another.

Really hope you're enjoying yourself, Orange, and anyone else running the marathon today! Looking forward to hearing how it went. It's a lovely day for it again.

Did my first parkrun yesterday at my parents local park and was really chuffed with 24.30 and 5th female home. That's a PB over 5km for me and on a grassy course with a couple of hills too. TBH my Garmin said it was only 4.90, but I figure I'd just have sneaked in under 25 minutes if I'd run an extra 100m, which is good enough for me!

That's a fab time pootlebug, I can only dream of sub 25 min!

Believe me cinnamon, I couldn't have imagined it a few months ago either. At Christmas I was still definitely a fair bit over 30 minutes.

I can only dream of a sub 30 min 5k!

Just caught this conversation. Have you thought about doing something with more interest than just running on the roads. I am from OMM. In 2014 we have a number of events where we want to encourage younger people to compete so we have dropped the entry age to 14. This is provided that the other member of the team is over 18. The events are OMM Bike Spring (Kielder) 26th/27th April. OMM Lite/OMM Bike (Autumn) North West of England 6th/7th September. We also have adult only events OMM Iceland 24th/25th May. OMM France 19th/20th July Avoriaz (You can enter this from age 16) The OMM North East England 25th/26th October. For more information www.theomm.com/events. I've seen a few people in OMM clothing - we had a whole team in it at one marathon I helped at - and always assumed it was a clothing brand rather than an event company. You learn something new every day!

Not sure if this has been covered on this thread but how soon did any of you return to running after having a baby?

I'm 4.5 months on and still don't feel up to it. Don't leak much but have a kind of bruising sensation. I am slowly going crazy not being able to get out for a run.
