As the first thread ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1948631-Is-there-a-general-running-thread? ) is now pretty much full time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who runs no matter how fast or slow or how long you run for to discuss all things running!

Thats the one!
It's lovely, one of my favourite NT houses anyway so I was delighted to find out about the pr there. The estate is beautiful.
Come run with meeeeee Grin
(Thank you for humouring me btw Smile)

EauRouge · 08/03/2014 18:06

Thursday A new 5k PB? Well done, that's a fantastic time.

Well done fishandjam , just seen the results- fab time! You'll be sub-30 by the end of spring at this rate.

All this talk of new kit is a bad influence on me. I want to start running 4 or 5 times a week so I'll defo need a new top and I need some new shorts anyway...

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 08/03/2014 18:07

Well done Thursday Grin. Come and tell us on the parkrun thread as well Grin

Sirzy hope DS is OK. My DS2 had croup once and it was horrid.

cinnamon it is vg flapkjack - better than my home made attempts. all squishy and moist and syrupy. I checked the ingredients and they were otas, syrup, condensed milk and some other stuff, but it didn't look like a long list of artificial stuff.

Welcome Pantone.

Newrowsees when I was marathon training I ran into work in central London from Wimbledon once or twice. I left a set of work clothes, shower stuff etc at work the day before, and carried a small rucksack with my purse/keys/work ID/phone/drink. I think I'd be too tired to run home at the end of a working day.

Pringle hope your ankle feels better soon.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the parkrun thread.
I've looked longingly at that in the past,

Fishandjam · 08/03/2014 18:18

I'm not humouring you at all Thursday, I managed 33:52 (or something) and felt like I was going to throw up! We've been to Lanhydrock already (not for running) when we were on hols last year - we go to a place near Wadebridge - but it was in all that cold weather in April and it was bloody perishing. I really want to see the gardens in full bloom rather than sulking in the mud!

Sorry to hear about the croup sirzy, I hope he gets better soon.

Sirzy · 08/03/2014 18:24

He gets it a lot, part and parcel of his asthma - just likes keeping me on my feet!

Well done on the personal bests! I need to get faster!

Eau - I don't know what is wrong with me, I have found myself looking for running kit before pretty dresses and things now!

Just been out for the gust time in six shocked months. Feel a bit wobbly. Did week five of c25k. Main problem is my feet. I've new trainers and the soles of my feet were agony.

ThursdayLast · 08/03/2014 18:31

Poor mini Sirzy. And poor sirzy too, sounds like hard work for parents too.
I agree with you sirzy and eau, just this very evening I have been perusing bday presents for DS and sports direct. I spend more time in my kit these days than pretty dresses!
Fish, I'm glad you love it too! And in all seriousness, when it gets closer to the time, if you want to run together I'm always up for meeting up Smile

meerschweinchen · 08/03/2014 19:17

cinnamon I don't know when I have to enter the half by. Entries haven't even opened yet, so i'm hoping I've got a while. I've decided to aim to run 3 times a week to start with, and I guess I'll just see how I go. Does anyone follow any particular plan they can recommend? I've used a couple of different ones in the past and found they helped, but can't remember which ones!

Thursday congrats on your pb. I'd love to do a sub 30 mins, but never managed it yet. Will take me a very long time to get there - if ever! Stupid question - I've heard of parkruns, but don't really know what they are. Can anyone enlighten me?

EauRouge · 08/03/2014 19:27

Parkruns are timed 5k runs. They're free to do and they're not that serious. Have a look on the website, there might be one near you. Can't link as I'm on my phone, think it is parkrun.org.uk

ThursdayLast · 08/03/2014 19:31

parkrun linky

Thank you v much - I have been running for over two years (with a pregnancy in the middle) so I have built up vvvvv slowly Grin
The first Lanhydrock parkrun was in Jan this year, hence why I've never tested myself before.

Sirzy · 08/03/2014 19:51

Meer - runkeeper have some training plans you can do through the app a friend of mine likes them. I seem to struggle following any traning plan personally!

Ouch ouch ouch. Very sore patch on inside of left shin - almost too tender to touch. Will need to keep an eye on that...

Can I ask you ladies something? Are you all runners of many years, or if not have you always been sporty in some other way? Or is anyone an ex-couch potato?

Sirzy · 08/03/2014 20:24

I am very much an ex-couch potato!

This time last year I was 6 stone overweight and couldn't run to the end of the street!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 08/03/2014 20:32

Sirzy that's a great achievement.

I was keen but rubbish at sport at school - I got picked for the hockey team because I turned up for training, not because of any innate skill.

I played a bit of squash in my 20's, dabbled in aerobics, yoga, swimming, tennis etc.

Then met DH, got married and had DCs, and did very little for about 10 years. I started going to a gym maybe 7 or 8 years ago after one of the DCs pointed out my squishy tummy.

Then DH got a job overseas. DCs and I stayed back in the UK to finish the school year, so to fill his time DH took up cycling and running again (he'd also had his couch potato years). By the time I joined him he was hooked. I was jealous of his new-found fitness, found a C25K thread on MN and the rest is history Grin.

cinnamongreyhound · 08/03/2014 20:37

Me too, started c25k in jan 2012 and lost 5 1/2 st nov2011-August2012. Hated pe at school, had a spell of about 6 months once doings aerobics with a friend about 10 years ago but otherwise nothing but walking to school and walking dogs. There's a lot of ladies at my club who've been running since they were 8 apart from having babies but also others who've started in the last 5-10 years.

NinetyNinePercentTroll · 08/03/2014 20:49

fishandjam, I'm an on-again-off-again runner. Was very into it a few years ago and then went quiet about 3 months after my running buddy gave up. Took it up again last year and am doing better than ever and have discovered that I really prefer to run alone.

NinetyNinePercentTroll · 08/03/2014 20:51

Couch spud wise, yes probably, I've been daddy about exercise before but running is the on,y thing that I've stuck to properly.

Sirzy · 08/03/2014 20:52

Thanks ohone still got 2 stone to lose according to dreaded BMI - but in size 10 jeans today for the first time ever so not too worried about that, over 4 stone gone never to come back and much fitter than ever before! Injury when I was 13 meant I had gone from 13 - 29 doing pretty much no exercise!

Well done Cinnamon!

FFs, iPad typos. Sorry. FADDY & only. I hereby apologise for my crap posts on MN as a result of my iPad & my proof reading laziness

Jeregrette · 08/03/2014 22:02

"Are you all runners of many years, or if not have you always been sporty in some other way? Or is anyone an ex-couch potato?"

I wasn't very good at sport at school (always picked last) but as a family we always loved to watch sport particularly tennis and athletics. I didn't do much exercise apart from walking throughout my twenties. In my early thirties I started walking to and from work every day continued walking throughout my first pregnancy.

Didn't get to do much solo walking once my DD was born but spent a lot of time pushing her around trying to get her to sleep. After the Olympic summer I was inspired to take up running as I wanted to continue the feel good factor that I'd experienced watching sport all summer. Did my first HM a year later after some on and off training. (I was troubled by injury in the early days) Now I try to take things a bit slower. I'd love to get really good at this sport (well at least be classed as good for age).

Jeregrette · 08/03/2014 22:08

Oh and did a 10k this evening ( final preparation for 10k next week). Ran the first 5k too fast (25:14) so was flagging by 7k. Took a gel 20 minutes in (practising fuelling strategy) and I did keep going but last 3k was really hard. Finished just under 57 minutes. I'm aiming for under an hour so was really pleased.

I probably should have gone a lot slower in training- I know you are not supposed to train at race pace but sometimes I just want to do a dry run

It is slightly risky now so easy runs for me this week

ThursdayLast · 08/03/2014 22:13

I was ace at sports at school (looong tome ago).
Then I did drinking and smoking and uni etc.
Always had a physical job so never put on weight but when I decided to get more active as a new years resolution in 2012 I to ed up brillliantly.
Started running (v small intervals using micoach) when clocks went forward in the spring.
Wondered in summer 2012 why a particular run was so bloody difficult, the got BFP a week later!
Started back in summer 2013, and have got better and better and better quicker than I ever could have imagined Grin

Jeregrette · 08/03/2014 22:22

"Ran the first 5k too fast (25:14) "

Oops in my dreams- more like 27:14!!
