As the first thread ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1948631-Is-there-a-general-running-thread? ) is now pretty much full time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who runs no matter how fast or slow or how long you run for to discuss all things running!

Hi all! Newbie here but figured with so many runners in the one place I might strike it lucky with some advice!

I'm looking for sweat wicking pants for exercising in. Any suggestions please? I've been couch to 5k-ing on and off for ages, and can run for 25 mins, but 12min 45sec mile. Going to try and work on my speed next, rather than focussing on minutes run. Do it on a treadmill, which prob doesn't help, as I settle into a rhythm. Will have a good read of the rest of the thread now!

Thanks in advance.

thelady I find Karrimor a really good brand. You often get good discounts at sportsdirect. I have capri pants for racing and running tights for training. Not sure they are made of wicking fabric though unlike the running tops.

Jeregrette - I was reading somewhere recently (I think on a kit review site when looking for the trail shoes I still haven't got round to buying) that Sports direct have bought Karrimor, which explains why they discunt the stuff so heavily. I have some of their stuff, though my Asics long tights and Nike capris are both better quality and have lasted longer then my Karrimor tights did.

I have not run all week - crazy busy at work - but did make a point of walking to a further-away tube station a couple of evenings. Parkrun tomorrow and a 10K on Sunday.

I have discovered a wonderful way of carb loading - Tesco everyday value flapjack. 60p for a big trayful, which is supposed to be 8 portions. The plan was to cut it up and freeze it but somehow I managed to eat it all.

May I join in? I used to run a bit, but haven't done much for the last 3-4 years. I have a six month old baby and really want to get fit again. I always find I'm more motivated if I have something to aim for...there's a half - marathon I'm keen to do in September. Would this be a realistic goal if I started running again now or is it a stupid idea? I probably walk 2-3 miles a day, so I'm not totally unfit, but not really very fit either, if that makes sense!

I think that's completely do-able meer, especially if you have some base fitness. Welcome to the thread!

Definitely doable. I trained for a half marathon in about 4/5 weeks ( though it's not really safe so I wouldn't recommenced it!) I had been running for a while before that but not consistently and had a lot of time off through one injury or another.

meerschweinchen · 07/03/2014 23:05

Ooh thank you for the replies! Could certainly not manage it in a few weeks(!), far too unfit for that, but would be nice to think it's achievable. Better dig out my trainers and get started.

Hello all. Good weekend plans for running? My goal is to do a 12/13 mile run tomorrow, which will be my last long run before my half marathon (two weeks and two days, not that I'm counting ...). Ran 4 miles today to test out my knee which was painful earlier this week - and was ok again today after lots of work with a roller (ow). So looking forward to this race being over - I know it's a shame to think like that but I don't like the feeling of running because I have to; I want to run again because I want to!!

Running today. Probably about 5-6k with local running club. But they use roads (don't like to get muddy - what is that about?) and I prefer being in the woods with mud up to my waist.

Is there any difference in which surface makes you fitter - hard or soft?

Just back from my second parkrun, by my own timekeeping I was faster, but I always forget to turn Runkeeper off straight away.
DP, DS and the dog came to have a wander around and meet me at the finish line, it was lovely (and we stopped for macdonalds breakfast on the way home Blush).

Hope everybody else manages to make the most of this lovely weather

Parkrun today and a 10K tomorrow Smile.

It's lovely outside isn't it. I'd be tempted to get out on my bike this afternoon if I wasn't running again tomorrow.

Boo. Can't run today as my ankle won't take it - even strapped. Going to swim instead. I love it but wish it had the 'just get up and go-ness' of running.

Happy running y'all!

Morning all. Just bashed out 8.5k on the road for the first time in ages (I'm normally a treadmill girl). It was harrrrd but good. Went for a fitting for new runners yesterday so wanted to christen them Grin - Brooks Ravenna's. Like running on clouds and lovely and supportive for my high arches.

Afternoon all! I managed another PB at Parkrun today, almost a minute faster than my last PB a fortnight ago Grin So maybe a sub-30 minute one isn't such an unrealistic fantasy after all. Developed some mild achilles/inner shin pain during the second lap though, hope that doesn't come back!

Hello to all new folk, and good luck to those doing HMs tomorrow (especially my boss, doing the Cambridge one).

Hallo fellow runners! Does anyone else run home from work? I have a 14k commute from central London and a 90 minute window to do it in. I'm still trying to work out the logistics (clothes / bags / whether to get the train or bus for part of the journey). Any strategy tips?

I'm not quite sure what you are asking theladylovescupcakes. I wear running leggings, karriomor as others have said, they are usually pretty moist by the time I finish running so guess they are!

Is it good flapjack OhOneOhTwoOhThree? I like flap jack but usually with big fat oats and very syrupy :)

It would have been too much for me meerschweinchen, I walked a lot before I started running but I wasn't that fit. It is totally doable for some though. When do you have to enter the half by? I did the c25k in jan-march was running 30mins 3x a week until July and then joined Running club who encouraged me to increase my distance but I still didn't do much more than 6miles. There are training plans out there that take you from couch to half I'm sure and you do have 6 months.

I totally know what you mean EATmum but I also found having no goal made me feel guilty about running too much Blush. Hope your 12-13 miles goes well!

Off road is tougher woodrunner but more gentle on your joints.

Sounds perfect ThursdayLast!

Hope it's feeling better soon SinglePringle and enjoy your swim.

You sound like a brooks rep NinetyNinePercentTroll!

Well done Fishandjam! Good luck to your boss. My dh works in Cambridge and has to work Sundays, he's getting someone else to go in for him who can cycle tomorrow as they're shutting roads from 4am!

Our parkrun birthday went well today and I'm planning 6miles with dogs tomorrow :)

not been able to get out to run for a few days, was going this morning but just as I was getting up to go DS woke with a croup attack so couldn't go. Fingers crossed I get out tomorrow!

My running tights are ascis and nike - nike ones are a bit thicker so ideal for colder days. Need to start thinking about getting some capri pants soon though I think. Got excited the other day when new socks were delievered Blush and a running top which actually fits

I think I got my first pair for about £20 from amazon. They're so comfy, wash so well and last brilliantly that I've happily paid full price for them since.

That's AMAZING Thursday! Bloody well done!!

Which Parkrun do you do, out of interest? I've got my eye on Lanhydrock for when we're on holiday in July.
