As the first thread ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1948631-Is-there-a-general-running-thread? ) is now pretty much full time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who runs no matter how fast or slow or how long you run for to discuss all things running!

Hello. Can I join? I'm not nearly as impressive as you lot! I do 5k three times a week, usually in about 25 mins but I am exhausted during and after it! I do stop sometimes - but only for, say, 30 secs to a minute. Wish I could do if flat out.

I also do Pilates twice a week and swim 60 x 25 meters twice a week so it's not like I'm totally unfit. Any tips to stop me stopping?!

EAT - get to a sports physio ASAP. They will assess you and give you the correct exercises.

Hello new folk! (Sorry to not name names, am on phone and it can get tricky with all the asterisks and scrolling to and fro )

My comfortable pace is turning out to be around 7m30s per km, which I am aware is equivalent to continental drift. I can go a bit quicker over 5k, but not much. Still, I only started running last year (aged 39 feetheart - it was realising I was about to turn 40, with young children, woefully unfit). So hopefully there's still scope for me to improve. Given when I started my km time was 9m45s, I'm still a bit Shock that I can achieve the time I do!

Hi I'm new to this thread too. I'm meant to be running the London marathon but am out with ligament damage at the moment Sad

I haven't run for a week and been told to give it another week so I'm really worried I won't be able to give it my best, if I can even run it at all. I know you're automatically entered into next year's race if you have to pull out due to injury but my heart was set on running it this year as it's my first full marathon and I've been buzzing about it! 2 weeks out with only 6 weeks to go is a lot though.

I've pulled out of the Hastings half which I'm gutted about because it'll be the first in 4 years I've missed and I love it, but it's very hilly and not worth the risk if I want to get round London a few weeks later.

Good luck/well done to everyone with their training and races Smile

Slightly stiff this evening!!

I woke at 4.30 this morning, with excitement of how well I did yesterday and have spent the day telling anyone who would listen!!! OMG, I have turned into one of those people who are obsessed and over-boastful!!

Tomorrow, I will rein it in!!! I promise.

Hello to all the new runners Smile

Well done on your hour long run, fish, that's fantastic! I'd say you'll easily be able to manage 10k in June.

I feel less achey now but that might be because I'm lying down. Grin

So lovely to see so many new posters!

If you get a charity place with a minimum sponsorship they you have to pay the difference if you don't raise enough, hence why it's a big responsibility and a they don't fill up as quickly!

5k in 25 mins is pretty quick SinglePringle, I'd say your stopping is mind over legs personally. Perhaps slow it down slightly until you can complete the while 5k then increase speed again.

Oh no EATmum, I've no idea with injuries but I'd get to see someone who does or google Wink seriously though if you are sensible and can be sure where your pain is oh can quite often fine exercises to help.

vikkik888 I guess it depends how you want to do it. This may literally be a once in a lifetime chance. Do you want to do it this year and do ok or do it next year and do it as well as you can? If you have a time in mind and aren't going to make that I'd defer but if you just want to get round and have the experience then go for it this year :)

Hello to all the new posters, love waking up to all the new posts will have a good catch up after my run later!

Sod's law says I didn't get to run yesterday when the weather was lovely. Time to run today and it's bouncing down. Torn between aiming for a good 5k or out for an hour again as far as I can. Will see how I feel when I get out!

morning to you all, can I come in and have a moan/little cry. did a half marathon sunday (not my first either) and yesterday and today I'm hobbling round on makeshift crutches resting the best I can. My Dr signed me off work for a week yesterday as my leg is so bad and I feel really miserable-will I ever run again?

MrsFrankTurner · 04/03/2014 08:46

Oh no Mile Hmm you will run again but you have to rest even though every sinew in your body wants to run (during my 11 day enforced run abstinence I was twitchy & dreaming about running -think I may be addicted!)
I did a fairly fast 5 mile this morning but the marathon feels terrifyingly close-I'm starting to fret about sleep deprivation causing injury & have told DH he has to sleep in the spare room until I've done the marathon as him with his snoring & restlessness will be the sole cause of my marathon failure -he pointed out I was being a little irrational Grin

It was lovely running this morning, its finally getting lighter and the sun was out despite being very cold. I see, to be getting slower though :/ I dont know why this bothers me but it does :(

Buddha - enjoy Every Single Second of that wonderful feeling, you have earnt it.

milewalker - take it easy then get yourself to a sports physio. I seem to be getting a bit repetitive here but one visit got me sorted and through the GNR a few weeks later with no after-effects and no problems since so I am a bit evangelical :)

Oh no, mile :( Hope your leg gets better soon. Any ideas what happened?

It's a beautiful day here too but I'm not going out today. Still in pain from a toenail on my left foot, and my right hip. Will probably go for a little recovery run tomorrow.

Happy8 Have you been getting slower for a while? Have you checked all the usual stuff (sleep, hydration, iron levels etc)?

DH and DD1 are signing up for a local 10k and 1k so I might sign up for the Great Eastern and another small local race. I've definitely got the bug now! My HM medal looks lonely on its own....

Oh no mile. Hope you feel better soon.

My motivation to run today is quickly going between rain and period pain. Going to drag myself out but not expecting anything great - may try a new route to change things a bit!

Morning everybody and hello to all new posters Grin
DP gave DS breakfast etc this morning so I thought it was an ideal time to get a long (for me) run in. Then I decided to take the dog. Honestly, he's crap, talk about the quickest way to ruin my motivationAngry
So we did 3.5 miles in about 37 mins. Not satisfying, but enough to allow me guilt free pancakes Wink

Dr did few 'tests' on my leg yesterday and had me moving it in different ways and said there was no problem with the alignment so I think that's good but it hurts like hot knives if I try to lift it up to go upstairs. He's not really sure what the problem is and has referred me to the physio.

about four weeks ago i started jillian michaels no more trouble zones and was aching due to starting that so instead of taking things bit easy three weeks ago today i ran a hard 10k race. The next morning i had a bit of a niggle in my leg but ignored it, kept going with jillian and kept running. The pain was coming and going-nothing to bad as to stop me exercising/running so i did another 10k the week after the first one and five days after that ran another 10k race which was all cross country. I was in bit of pain after and the next day ached quite a lot but took it easy (this was all last week) till sunday when i did the half. i got to about 10 miles and knew i was in trouble but there were no marshals so i had to walk to the finish prob making leg worse.

so here i am today, I've sold my place for a run i was supposed to be doing sunday coming that i really really wanted to do and I've now got to rest and hope it gets better soon. I have no idea what I've done but i think theres a high chance I've just over trained my poor old leg and its gone on strike as its had enough.

the only thing that's making me half smile is i didn't get a DNF and i did get my finishers t-shirt.

Hello to all new posters and well done to all hm runners at the weekend. Sorry on phone can't name check. Did my first park run on Sat and loved it gutted I can't make it this Saturday but am definitely aiming to make it a weekly event. Plotted a new route for tonight so hoping to do 4 miles. Weather is so gorgeous here I wish I could go now!

Finished 'running like a girl' really enjoyed it. That coupled with all the talk on here has got me thinking I would like to do a marathon now!

I hear you Cinnamon! I know I tell myself I cant do it - don't know what I'm scared of but there is something holding me back. I'll try the going slower thing tomorrow.

Did a fantastic (hard!) barre Pilates class last night also. Blimey my groin is feeling it today! Off for a swim in a bit to get some cardio and toning in - but in a gentle manner!

I've an old injury which means I can't run every day but it's a gorgeous day for it! Happy running to those who make it out!

Yes you are definitely going too fast (there is such a thing). Sounds like you are training at race pace. Ideally most of your training should be at comfortable conversational pace unless you are doing specific speed training. I always used to make the mistake of trying to beat my time every time I went out to do 5k but I just got injured a lot and found running painful and exhausting. When I stopped trying to beat the clock and worked on endurance, going longer at a slower pace, my speed and comfort doing shorter distances naturally improved.

25 minutes is fast though- and I'm quite envious. My fastest 5k is 26.19 and I'd love to break 24.

By the way how rude of me to just jump in!. I've been lurking for a while. May I join you.

I've been running since I turned 40, have run one HM (pretty slowly just under 2.30 but only had about 4/5 weeks to train after a period of injury (i wouldn't recommend it)) and currently training for 10ks this year.

I'd love to run another HM if the knees are up to it- and hopefully a marathon

Evening all, can I play? At the mo I'm a 10k'er, a fairly slow one, but a happy one. I'd love to get to marathon distance but that's a fair old chunk of training away.

I'm due a shoe change, I'm in Nike Anodynes at the mo but could do with a bit more arch support. I love the look of the Nike Run 5.0 series but no idea what the support is like. I need to go for another gait test to try them out, I think.
