As the first thread ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1948631-Is-there-a-general-running-thread? ) is now pretty much full time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who runs no matter how fast or slow or how long you run for to discuss all things running!

I prefer my Garmin because I hated having a massive phone strapped to my arm. It means that you can look at your pace and distance whenever you like instead of waiting for updates. I still listen to music, I just use a little MP3 player.

Mitchy1nge · 03/04/2014 17:29

my new garmin is going to run the london marathon next week on a friend's wrist :)

so if any of my MN garmin connect friends marvel at how I can suddenly do 26.2 8 minute miles so easily you will know the truth

originalpiratematerial · 03/04/2014 19:11

I run to or from work sometimes and I have an OMM Last drop 10 backpack which is perfect - really easy to carry, but big enough for essentials.

I can't do with running with a bum bag, they annoy the hell out of me.

originalpiratematerial · 03/04/2014 19:12

I carry my iPhone in a Tunebelt armband though.

cinnamongreyhound · 03/04/2014 19:15

I put my phone in my leggings and if I have my car key I put it on my laces. I don't carry water and very rarely wear a jacket, so not very helpful with that!

A bottle of water and banana are good post run nutrition. I don't worry too much what I eat before I run tbh.

Went out for 4.5 miles this morning with my friend and had to rush back to use the loo, have been sick twice too. Feeling very nauseous and sorry for myself, at least I ran before I got ill!

cinnamongreyhound · 03/04/2014 19:20

Garmin is more accurate I find and depending which on you get it has lots of functions! Mine is 110 and does time, pace, distance, laps and beeps at the end of the lap you set to give you lap pace.

I had an ipod with nike+ but I gave it to my mum for her walking which she promptly gave up but I don't listen to music. I take my phone just in case and as I have it I put endomondo on and compare the two because I'm a saddo

PolkaSpottyDotty · 03/04/2014 19:27

Can anyone recommend a good route planning app?

ThursdayLast · 03/04/2014 19:40

Oh cinnamon Sad poor you
Get well soon.
Just had a bit of a killer pilates class, think she was priming us for the easter holiday break!
But I love how strong and stretched my hips feel after

Plymouthsupporter · 03/04/2014 20:01

I am running in the Men's Race for life.

Sirzy · 03/04/2014 20:21

Hello newbies!

Not managaed to run for a few days but I WILL tomorrow.

Don't be jealous of hills, I am starting to hate hills as there are so few flat routes round here.

I have a cheap belt from sports direct to chuck my phone and key in. Not brill but does the job ok.

cinnamon wish you better soon!

originalpiratematerial · 03/04/2014 21:33

plymouthsupporter tell us more? How far is it?

And how are things with Pompey atm? Pompey Chimes still ringing out?

Mitchy1nge · 03/04/2014 23:56

I thought Plymouth didn't realise that until recently all races were men only, that women have worked hard to compete alongside them and to set up their own events and was just being a cock basically. Men who want to use men only races to raise money for cancer charities are free to do that and they have, men's race for life at boysbeatingcancer.org so that will teach me to assume the worst about a new poster!

Mitchy1nge · 04/04/2014 00:05

(am going for a short slow run in the morning, hopefully THIS will be the return of consistent running and I will turn into a nicer person)

originalpiratematerial · 04/04/2014 07:38

Blush I'm being stupid - Pompey is Portsmouth, right? Not Plymouth. I'll get me coat...

originalpiratematerial · 04/04/2014 07:40

More self-obsessed wittering from me. Having spent the last two evenings alternating a bag of frozen peas and a hot water bottle on various areas of my right leg, and not running (or doing anything much) yesterday, it feels a lot better. The only area of discomfort is just a little bit below the ankle bone on the inside of right foot and I'm hoping that whatever that is, it will have cleared by Sunday morning [crosses fingers].

originalpiratematerial · 04/04/2014 07:41

Does anyone here wear those compression socks for running?

TessTackle · 04/04/2014 08:22

Good morning! Having to go alone again today. Almost talked myself into not going but I won't get fit if I don't!

Hoping to run further than Tuesday so wish me luck x

MelanieCheeks · 04/04/2014 08:22

Yes, I'm toying with trying those socks, so any comments would be good.

Had a really slow 8km rn last night - hills and shin splints. And dog-poo-stops. I'm not sure I can acheive my target of running Sunday's 10k in under an hour

Mitchy1nge · 04/04/2014 09:11

I'm putting some on NOW

never tried because physio said there wasn't any evidence they'd help me but am wearing them today because can't find any normal running socks

they are nice blue gococo ones if that interests anyone Grin they can have all the credit if I manage a pain free but painfully slow plod

EauRouge · 04/04/2014 09:17

The smog is finally lifting here and I got 7k in the bag this morning. 43 mins, not bad. DH is away for a week so I might only get out for a run once, if my lovely, generous neighbours offer to watch the DDs for me.

Blatherskite · 04/04/2014 10:00

I've worn compression socks since I tore my calf. I have a very understanding physio who recommended them so that I could run a 10k trail race about 3 weeks after I did it! They helped a lot, sort of holding everything in place so the scar tissue didn't get so sore so fast. I've just started running without them again as I'm back in Capris and I could feel where the tear was despite running pain free for a month or so in the compression socks.

I have a very experienced running friend who wears them after long runs to help with recovery (they help move the lactic acid from your calves by aiding blood flow I believe) but won't wear them for running as he says they make his legs feel heavy and slow.

I think I'm going to try a few months without mine and see how I go. The compression has come to feel very comforting but I'm going faster since I stopped wearing them so often. Not sure if it's training that's helping that or the socks. Need to do some test runs to check I think.

Blatherskite · 04/04/2014 10:03

Mine are black CEP socks. I wanted calf guards (socks without the foot on) so that I didn't have to wash them after every run but I was in a hurry to get them before the race and was limited with what the local shops had in my size.

originalpiratematerial · 04/04/2014 12:41

Thanks all. I think I'll not rush out and get them for Sunday's 10k, but will get some afterwards and experiment with them.

thefemaleJoshLyman · 04/04/2014 14:06

Hello all, hope that you are feeling better Cinnamon. (I am excited to be on my PC so I can bold!)

Good luck on Sunday pirate, hope that your legs feel better to run your money raising is awesome.

Well I did 10 miles this morning, my longest ever run. I did it in 1hr 35 which I was pretty pleased with, especially since I needed two toilet breaks during the run - good job I was running around a country park with lots of public loos. Blush It felt pretty good. I am just coming around to the idea that I will be able to run a HM in October.

I went with my DH's CamelBak this morning, which solved both my storage and water issues and was much better than carrying a bottle.

No Parkrun for me tomorrow, we are off for a family day out at IWM Duxford, my DD is very excited about seeing a real spitfire. Hope everyone has lovely weekend runs and good PR times.
