As the first thread ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1948631-Is-there-a-general-running-thread? ) is now pretty much full time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who runs no matter how fast or slow or how long you run for to discuss all things running!

A lady from my club wore them when she had calve problems and afterwards as she felt too worried to take them off so I guess you can feel dependent on them.

Thank you all, I'm back to normal now apart from feeling a bit weak due to not eating anything or drinking much all day, I lost 2Kg yesterday Shock. Will attempt to parkrun tomorrow but not push it pacewise.

That's a great time thefemaleJoshLyman and they say if you can run 10 miles you can run a hm! Enjoy your day out Duxford is my idea of hell, with a geeky husband and 3 boys it has to be done periodically!

Blatherskite · 04/04/2014 14:39

That was my problem too cinnamon - I was getting nervous to run without them. I'm sure it's all in my head but it's why I'm forcing myself to have some time off from them.

No parkrun here tomorrow either as I need to see my Niece for her birthday. A bit of tourism the week after visiting a new run and then RD training the week after. I'm more nervous about the training than I am about my half marathon the day before!

Mitchy1nge · 04/04/2014 18:42

I enjoyed my compression socks this morning, I really like the colour of them and they have a funny little green line around the inside at the top too which might be elastic or have some other magical properties

don't suppose I will ever know if they are doing anything or if it's the time off and the physio and the stretches and so on but maybe will order some more just in case ;)

Plymouthsupporter · 04/04/2014 18:47

I love going for a run.

Theonlyoneiknow · 04/04/2014 19:04

Some of these amused me and rang true!

Doing my first ParkRun tomorrow and feel really nervous. I have my barcode print out - do I just cut one out and take a new one each time? can anyone give me an idea what happens? How much before 9 should I get there? Whats the process? I always feel better about things if I have an idea what to expect. oh and are headphones allowed?

Sirzy · 04/04/2014 19:22

love that Theonly. My thoughts are about as random when running!

Hello from a new person Smile I am training for triathlons so feel a bit of a fraud on the individual swim/bike/run threads, but am loving running the most of the three disciplines just now, so have signed up for a half marathon at the end of Sept...I have 8 weeks after my last triathlon to increase my running distance from 10km but am hoping the overall fitness will help too.

Sirzy · 04/04/2014 19:26

welcome pootle.

Triatalon sounds great, although my swimming and cycling are both too bad for that to ever be an option for me. i would have thought if you are fit enough to do that you will easily manage a half marathon

Assume Parkruns are all the same, take one barcode which you can reuse - the others are spare. I usually get there 15 mins before to warm up and headphones are allowed (at ours anyway). As you cross the line you get a little token thing which you give to the desk a bit further along with your barcode. Results texted / emailed a few hours after. Good luck!x

youbethemummylion · 04/04/2014 19:44

Great thanks pigsinblankets

Theonlyoneiknow · 04/04/2014 20:29

Oooo what are park runs? Sounds intriguing!

Blatherskite · 04/04/2014 20:52

parkrun is a free, timed 5k run that happens every Saturday morning at 9am at 250 different locations around the world.

You need to register at www.parkrun.org.uk/ and will be emailed a barcode which you need to print out and take with you - tuck it in a pocket as you won't need it until the end. There is a huge map showing all of the locations on the website and you are free to attend anyone you want - no pre-booking or further registering required. I usually try to turn up 20-30 minutes in advance to make sure I'm parked and have found the start line, there will be a briefing from the local Run Director (RD) and off you go. As you cross the finish line, you'll be handed a position chip which you take, along with your personal barcode, to one of the volunteers scanning. They'll scan both, give you your personal barcode back to reuse and within a couple of hours your results will be on the website. If you include a mobile number when you register, you'll get a text with your result too. You can see your time, overall position, how you did within your age group and what your age graded score is. After you've done a few, you'll be able to see all your runs and compare times.

parkrun 'tourism' - where you travel to visit new parkruns - is becoming a bit of a 'thing' and I've done a few. I've yet to find an unfriendly one. Everyone is welcome whether they're sprinting round in 15 minutes or walking round in an hour. There should be a tail runner who makes sure everyone gets back OK and everyone is cheered over the finish line.

It's brilliant and I love it. It makes getting up on Saturday and running around the park one of the highlights of my week. As scared as I am about training to be an RD, I'm also really excited to be a part of the organisation of it all.

Blatherskite · 04/04/2014 20:56

Apologies for getting a bit over excited there Blush

cinnamongreyhound · 04/04/2014 20:59

Parkruns are fab youbethemummylion and Theonlyoneiknow! It is a free, timed 5k run open to all, that starts at 9am in parks all over the country (with several now abroad too). You register and find your local parkrun at www.parkrun.org.uk, they email you a barcode which you print and take with you. Arrive 8.30-45, say hello/chat, run, get token at the end which is scanned after your personal barcode, chat some more and have a cuppa at the cafe f you fancy it. No one is too slow and everyone is welcome and encouraged. As already said ou just need one barcode and that is scanned at the end. When I'm run director I do a new runners talk at 8.50 and then we collect at the start a few mins before 9 for a quick blurb and off we go. We allow headphones too.

cinnamongreyhound · 04/04/2014 21:00

Too slow blatherskite beat me to it!! And she will be a great RD, if I can do it anyone can Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 04/04/2014 21:02

And find some more parkrunners here

youbethemummylion · 04/04/2014 21:03

Great thanks. Im nervous/excited now! Is the route signposted or do I have to memorise it? Im rubbish remembering a route and may get lost!

cinnamongreyhound · 04/04/2014 21:08

Yes, we have signs and/or marshals at every point where you have to change direction :)

Theonlyoneiknow · 04/04/2014 21:31

Ok, am in Aberdeenshire. Off to look!

Blatherskite · 04/04/2014 22:29

We have marshals at every change of direction/fork in the path too so no-one gets lost.

That said, I could probably run it in my sleep these days as I've done that course 50-odd times now :)

stuckindamiddle · 04/04/2014 23:04

marking place

EauRouge · 05/04/2014 07:22

Good luck, first time parkrunners! I'm marshalling today.

HalleLouja · 05/04/2014 09:24

So last night I ran for 45 mins and managed 7.2k. That was the fastest I have run and the longest. Whoop! Was really proud of myself. I probably could have kept going too.

HalleLouja · 05/04/2014 09:25

Waves at all the newbies.
