As the first thread ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1948631-Is-there-a-general-running-thread? ) is now pretty much full time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who runs no matter how fast or slow or how long you run for to discuss all things running!

Can I join you? The C25K thread is quiet over the last couple of days!

I only started C25k on Sunday, but jumped to week 2 early as I found the runs too short and the walks too long.

I'm doing 5k in 9 weeks then 10k in Sept, that'll be the farthest I've run. Hoping for half marathon in Feb!!

Sirzy · 02/04/2014 21:41

Original, I know exactly what you mean. I feel exactly the same!

welcome Polka! Sounds like realistic targets!

I'm the same originalpiratematerial! Been running over 2 years now, pretty much every run is over 4 miles and I still have to convince myself I can do it.

Nhs couch to 5k is the podcast I used Cocolepew.

cinnamongreyhound · 02/04/2014 21:43

Hi Polkaspottydotty!

PolkaSpottyDotty · 02/04/2014 21:49

Hello

I'm hoping for a good time for my 5k, I'd love to do it in under 30 mins. It's a long way off yet!

Well done on the fundraising pirate. I'm supporting my friend running a marathon this weekend. That's NOT on my list :)

Sirzy · 02/04/2014 21:52

My target is to get under 30 mins for my 5k, but progress towards that seems to be slow! I am just happy to be running.

When you get the bug there will be no stopping you, I started with just a 10k on my list.. now I have a 1/2 marathon booked and plan to do a marathon next year!

I'm registering for the half next week. I have absolutely no desire for the full marathon. Oh no no no noooo!

Theonlyoneiknow · 02/04/2014 23:43

Despite being on MN for a wee while I have just discovered the exercise posts!

Alongside the shred DVDs I run three times a week. As it has been dark up until this week I have been doing two shorter runs of approx 7km on a Tuesday and a Friday evening, and a longer run of about 10km on a Sunday afternoon (or a long bike ride).

For some reason I haven't been thinking about the best pre and post running foods (I am also looking to lose 3lbs). Any suggestions? I normally run at 8pm which is a couple of hours after my dinner. Not ideal but have toddler bedtime carnage before then.

Thanks TOOIK

originalpiratematerial · 03/04/2014 07:25

Sirzy it's taken me absolutely ages to do a sub-30 min 5k! I'd given up hope actually. But since January I've been working out with a personal trainer as well as running and I think doing things like squats and lunges with weights has really strengthened my muscles, as since January I've improved on all my previous times, including getting (just) below the sub-30 min barrier.

originalpiratematerial · 03/04/2014 07:26

Cocolepew I used the Guardian beginner runner podcasts - I really liked them, the music was good and the bloke's voice wasn't too annoying.

MelanieCheeks · 03/04/2014 07:47

Pre and post running foods - try different things and see what works for you. I like a piece of toast with peany butter about an hour before, and a chocolate milk or iced latte afterwards. But I wouldnt drink coffee in the evening. If I'm doing an evening run I'll not eat anything particular before, and have some pasta afterwards.

Cocolepew · 03/04/2014 08:09

Thank you Smile

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 03/04/2014 09:35

Can I join? I've only just started running again, after an almost 3-year hiatus due to both having my DTDs & sheer laziness! Grin I completed my 5th 5km run yesterday in 34 mins, which is I guess ok, but so, so much slower than I used to run. I am trying not to go too hard too soon though, as I know I have to build up stamina/muscles etc. again (not to mention some nice callouses on my feet!)

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 03/04/2014 09:36

Oh forgot to mention, I am also doing 30 Day Shred & strength training in gym. Smile

briteside · 03/04/2014 10:16

Hello all...This thread moves fast Grin Definitely faster than my running, especially this week, as I am in London and the pollution has ruled out running outside for a few days. I thought it was all hog-wash until I tried yesterday and had to turn back.

pirate I completely agree about forgetting I can run...the other day I stopped after the first 2 minutes of running and gave myself a pep-talk NOT to think about what I was doing, just to put one foot in front of the other and bloody RUN. I tend to over analyse and panic between runs that I will have 'lost' all my fitness and ability.

theonlyone I am also looking to lose some weight - I struggle with the post run food. I am not at all hungry for about 45 minutes after I run but then am instantly ravenous and end up snacking on junk.

Theonlyoneiknow · 03/04/2014 10:24

Thanks for the food tips! Am finding that side of thinfs difficult as want to be eating the right stuff for muscle recovery but am not very hungry after running.

As my distances (slowly!) Increase i think i will need a bum bag Type thing for a jacket, phone etc. What do people use?

I live in a small coastal scottish village, nice, but means i never do any flat running it is either uphill or downhill !

briteside · 03/04/2014 11:12

theonlyone I am jealous of your hills - around me it is very flat and I struggle to find any elevation. Wish we could mix & match locations depending on our moods.

I got a fitletic Single Neoprene Race Belt for christmas and am impressed. I always thought I was not a bum bag' type of person but this is very small & discrete, I can wear it on my waist or turned backwards on my lower back plus it is very small & light. I love being able to carry my phone on longer runs (I hate those arm band phone straps, always rubbing!)

PolkaSpottyDotty · 03/04/2014 13:46

I bought a cheapy Karrimor waist bum bag from Sports Direct that does the job nicely.

Rest day today, I feel like I should go out...

Mitchy1nge · 03/04/2014 13:53

I don't take anything with me, not even my car keys if I can leave them in the ignition (v rural) or stash them somewhere, was glad to abandon Long Runs and the need to have a few sips of liquid now and then too because my hydration pack thing drove me mad

although am happy to put things in other people's pockets when possible Grin

EauRouge · 03/04/2014 14:00

I didn't get on with the Karrimor waist pack, I found it too bouncy. I ended up getting capris with a zip pocket at the back. I take my phone when I go trail running (so I can phone DH to come and rescue me if I fall in a ditch, but mostly I end up using it for taking shit blurry photos). I've recently pilfered DH's old Camelbak for long runs but I need to give it a good clean before I use it.

PeanutPatty · 03/04/2014 14:00

Theonlyoneiknow · 03/04/2014 14:28

Was just having a look at the Lowe Alpine ones

www.lowealpine.com/ranges/lightflite-5

or

www.madaboutmountains.co.uk/p/6113/Lowe-Alpine-Lightflite-Hydro-4?gclid=CODiyJ-1xL0CFcPTcgodbgcAsA

But not sure how much it will bug me. Problem is I start off really cold (arm warmers are a good halfway house though) and then get really hot so don't know what to do with my gillet thing.

Maybe a small hydration backpack would be better

Have been struggling with motiviation lately so been getting DP to kick me out the car half way home on the way back from work so I have to run back!

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 03/04/2014 15:37

I've got a little bum pocket on my running tights for my car key, & I have an arm band for my iPhone with strava on it. I'm intending to get a Garmin when (if!) I can afford it Smile

Theonlyoneiknow · 03/04/2014 16:54

My tights have a little pocket but for some reason I don't use it?!!

What does a Garmin do that the Endemondo/Strava apps don't? I need my music though so don't mind carrying my phone, plus where I run is quite remote and often have WCS (worse case scenario) thoughts in my head!
