As the first thread ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1948631-Is-there-a-general-running-thread? ) is now pretty much full time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who runs no matter how fast or slow or how long you run for to discuss all things running!

Hi to the newcomers.

Just popping in briefly to wave.

5k run tonight. Pace is improving. Last mile in under 8 minutes and equalled my PB so I'm basically back to where I was in 2013 before a number of injuries. I really empathise with all of you struggling with injuries at moment.

Fishandjam- I know the feeling of chomping at the bit wanting to get out there again

originalpiratematerial · 01/04/2014 22:49

Hello to all newcomers [waves].

I meet a lot of runners out and about and we don't generally acknowledge each other but if someone nods/smiles/says hi I do always try to respond unless i am too far gone Blush.

I had some lads about the same age as my oldest son make some remarks to me one evening when I was running home from work. Oh and in rural Yorkshire where my parents live some little gits threw stones at me, nice. Other than that I've had no heckling of any kind. Being older probably helps.

I'm shitting myself about this six mile run on Sunday. I'm wishing i hadn't signed up for it now, but having got over £1700 in sponsorship I can't back out!

cinnamongreyhound · 02/04/2014 07:36

That's amazing originalpiratematerial!!!!!! You'll be absolutely fine, have faith!

feetheart · 02/04/2014 09:25

Hello to new people.

3.6 miles this morning just as sun was coming up, perfect way to start the day :)
Run felt good inspite of slightly iffy knee which behaved itself until I tried to climb the stairs once I got home - need to do more of the physio exercises I think!
Got a 10k on Sunday that I intend to treat as a long run (as it will be the furthest I have run for a while!). Very interested to see how I get on as the last 'proper' 10k I did was over 2 years ago and I will be very cross if I can't beat that time

Sirzy · 02/04/2014 10:27

wow well done original pirate! Who re you fundraising for?

originalpirate - sounds like normal big event nerves to me

Believe me, on the day it will be fab and £1700 will get you round even if the event, the excitement, the atmosphere, the spectators and the other runners don't :)

St Joseph's Hospice in Hackney Smile

It's a Celebration of Life run and as I've lost so many family members and friends to cancer in the last few years, it really resonates with me.

I ran to work this morning and my dodgy right leg was, well, dodgy again. I am thinking maybe I will just not run at all between now and Sunday. It's a weird thought as I rarely go more than two days without running, but I am confident that I am fit enough to do the distance, as long as my leg holds up. What do people think?

CQ · 02/04/2014 18:05

pirate I think it will do no harm at all to rest between now and Sunday, and is probably the best thing - maybe just a walk or gentle swim or some yoga to keep you limbered up. Race day is always easier than training runs as long as the basic fitness is there, the buzz will keep you going. And you know it doesn't matter if you have to walk some of it, as long as you get across that finish line. I bet you'll feel a bit emotional in the last straight thinking of all your loved ones.

Cocolepew · 02/04/2014 18:07

I'm just about to go to do my first c25k with DD. I have a dodgy hip, knee and lung.

I'm going to die aren't I?
Sad

Sirzy · 02/04/2014 18:12

Coco - you will be fine. Just remember, even if you struggle today and can only do a short amount given time things will get easier and easier!

Try to enjoy it!

Original - CQ said exactly what I was thinking Grin
Your total really is something to be proud of too.

Good luck coco, let us know how you get on.

Tess! You are a genius, I had repeated a route yesterday, so I reckon it was a shade under 8miles, but I really lose track of time when I run so no idea how long I was.
The whole of Fighting Talk, and most of Just a Minute podcasts Grin

No run today. Pilates tomorrow.
Making my sis who isn't really a runner do parkrun with me on Sat. She's signed up for a R4L 5k, so I thought it would be good experience for her - she's usually on the treadmill.

sassytheFIRST · 02/04/2014 18:33

Ran 5.5 miles today, took about 55 mins but there was a BIG hill involved. Enjoyed it, felt pretty comfortable (except momentarily, on the hill) but my earphones are broken so I had no treble at all, just bass all the way.

My sister uses podcasts, she's doing the VLM next week, so they are a good idea.

sassytheFIRST · 02/04/2014 18:34

Original - wow, what a total. Hope you enjoy it.

Coco, take it slowly, you will get there...and there will come a point when you like it!

Cocolepew · 02/04/2014 19:51

I survived! Ran the whole 8 times, without needing to stop.
I'm quite pleased with myself Grin I only recovered from double pleurisy 2 weeks ago. Dd was a flying machine. I only went to keep her company, she likes running so I thought this would break her in, the man running it said that she is good enough for his running club.

We're going to download the podcast and go ourselves on a friday and at the park with the coach on a monday and wednesday .

Thank you for your words of encouragement Smile

sassytheFIRST · 02/04/2014 19:55

Well done coco, and after being so poorly too.

Sirzy · 02/04/2014 19:56

Fantastic Coco!

I am seriously contemplating entering a 10k on the 27th april.

ThursdayLast · 02/04/2014 20:25

You could do that easily by now sirzy I'm sure.
Well done coco, double pleurisy is not to be sniffed at

Cocolepew · 02/04/2014 20:34

Thank you Smile
I used to run a few years ago but took ill. I was ill for a year until I had a hysterectomy. Then I got worse and I was eventuslly diagnosed with Lupus. I've been on medication for a couple of months and I'm hoping to get a bit fitter and lose a stone.
Hopefully I'll be able to run in the park run at the end of the 9 weeks. .

cinnamongreyhound · 02/04/2014 20:45

Go for it Sirzy, there's one near me that day I'd like to do but it's ds1's birthday.

Well done cocolepew, I started with c25k I think it's a great plan and it really works. The first run is the hardest!

That seems like a perfectly sensible gap originalpiratematerial. Good luck!

Cocolepew · 02/04/2014 20:55

Could anyone reccomend the best podcast please?

Cocolepew · 02/04/2014 20:56

Oops meant to say for android phone .

originalpiratematerial · 02/04/2014 21:27

Aw, thanks CQ and Thursday - that's really nice of you to say so Smile.

I'm going to do the cold then heat thing a few times over the next few days, and keep stretching, but not run. I guess I can trust that all the training I've done in the last few months should mean I have enough cardio fitness and stamina to carry me round [fingers crossed].

originalpiratematerial · 02/04/2014 21:34

Oh and thank you cinnamongreyhound

I know it probably seems silly to you experienced runners, but I get panicky if I don't run - it's like I think if I'm not actually doing it, then I can't do it, iyswim Confused. So I have to keep doing it to prove to myself that I can do it.

originalpiratematerial · 02/04/2014 21:35

cocolepew I think you're brilliant!
