As the first thread ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1948631-Is-there-a-general-running-thread? ) is now pretty much full time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who runs no matter how fast or slow or how long you run for to discuss all things running!

Lots of great runs!

My right leg and foot are still not right Hmm and I really can't tell what's going on. I did 7 km today and, like Friday's run, it was fine at first but after a bit I started to notice more and more discomfort - not pain, just discomfort.

I am guessing the best thing to do is soldier on until after I've done this six mile run next Sunday and then rest up. Have emailed sports massage therapist to ask her for advice. I could get a treatment this week, I expect, but I wonder if it would just make things worse for Sunday Confused

Jeregrette · 30/03/2014 22:48

Great time Blather! I want to get under 25 minutes this year if at all possible but that would be getting over a minute off PB.

Went out on a 10k run today. Wanted to go further but knees very stiff and sore at mile 6 so decided to stop.

originalpiratematerial · 31/03/2014 07:26

That's a brilliant time Blatherskite!

zombiesheep · 31/03/2014 07:42

Thank you Sirzy :o yeah I don't know if next years marathon is too high for aim for :(

MelanieCheeks · 31/03/2014 07:52

I did a bit of ParkRun tourism this week, and travelled to Bangor who were having their inuagural event.

The course was fairly flat, but the paths quite narrow at points, and some sharp twists and turns. With over 200 participants, it got a bit crowded and I was hemmed in for a lot of the first lap. Then my dog got her lead tangled round a waste bin, and THEN she decided it was a triathlon and jumped into the duck pond. At which point my shoe lace came undone and I had to stop and fix it.

I saw a woman of about my age wearing a "100" park run T shirt, so I decided to use her as my pace setter. Came in at 27:27 - not quite a PB, but I was happy enough with my running. Oh and there were bacon butties and cups of tea afterwards, which was nice!

Managed a long run yesterday - and my first 10k race is next Sunday Aaargh! I'm hoping for my first sub-60 time over that distance.

Sirzy · 31/03/2014 07:55

Go for it zombie!

Sounds good Melanie. Good luck for next week

Well done to Thursday, Blathers and yoube on some impressive times!

As for me.. Boo. Surgery today so no running for a week. Missed my long run on Saturday as I spent the whole day taking DD to birthday parties - I think that was more tiring than a long run, to be honest! Feeling twitchy already and I suspect I'll not be in a good mood by the end of this week.

How's your knee, Dharma?

Dharmalovesdraco · 31/03/2014 13:07

Not brilliant Vlad I can feel it with every step, but it's not a massive pain. I'll rest for another day and attempt a run tomorrow. I hope your surgery goes well today and fingers crossed the week goes quickly so you can run again!
Blather was it a specific course you did?

All this talk of running in lighter evenings fills me with dread, in the dark I can make believe people can't see me Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 31/03/2014 13:46

Don't worry Dhamalovesdraco, other runners will say and anyone else will a) think you're crazy or b) have great respect for getting out when they wouldn't!

Blatherskite · 31/03/2014 13:51

It was a course organised by my running club Dharma. There is something very similar in this months Women's Running though.

I think I might have made more progress had I not still been struggling with some pain from my torn calf and then hurting my hip and getting flu too. I'm going to carry on some of the exercises and see if going further to go faster helps as I do my half training.

I saw someone on here say once that when you're worried about being spotted while out running, think about how many runners you saw when you were last out and what you thought of them. I think in general, the non-runners won't notice and the runners will just be pleased to see someone getting out.

originalpiratematerial · 31/03/2014 19:10

Dharma, fingers crossed it gets better soon!

I had a half-hour treatment from sports massage therapist on my right leg and it feels so much better now. She said she was sure there was nothing to worry about. Am very relieved.

Jeregrette · 31/03/2014 20:48

Does anyone on here get heckled when they are out? Doesn't happen that often but usually at least once a week.

I hate the cars full of lads that yell something really loud as they zoom past you in your car just to make you jump.

I did have a girl say "jog on" as I went past once and then started giggling about her funny joke to her friend. So much for sisterhood. The worse one was some teenager yelling you XXXXXXX XXXXX (I'm not going repeat it but there were fs and bs in it) out a window as I ran past. I used to live in a rough area but that one did upset me.

I love seeing other runners out. I've never had the courage to do the runners nod but I never really know what to do when passing a runner in the opposite direction so I kind of stay in the zone and hope they want to be left in the zone too and don't think I'm rude.

Mitchy1nge · 31/03/2014 21:08

I always smile at other runners and cyclists, I smile at everyone, like an appeasing chimp Hmm people usually say hello or comment on the amount of water I'm splashing through (I suppose that's how long it's been since I went for a run alone! it's all dry now)

the heckling thing or fear of it is probably why I prefer running off road if I'm by myself, preferably where there is no public right of way or on bridleways that are too churned up for people, only a couple of times have I had cars drive very slowly beside me in a scary sort of way, with a leering driver Angry I feel happier in a group or with at least one other person, it's sad isn't it?

cinnamongreyhound · 31/03/2014 21:29

Not had hecklers but I run in the forest so don't see many people! I always say hello/morning to everyone I pass which is often one person! I also always thank people who move to the side unlike people who I move my dogs over to let past mostly Angry

My earlier post was supposed to say runners will say hello!!

MelanieCheeks · 31/03/2014 21:45

Not hecklers as such, sometimes a passing car will toot.

The runners nod is really simple, I do it if I can, but I know the other runners will understand if I don't.

I was crossing a road junction this evening, and a motorcyclist waved me across, so I gave him a cheery thumbs up and a smile. And I'll usually say "Hiya!" to any doggies I'm passing.

CQ · 31/03/2014 22:40

Hi all, checking in after a busy weekend. A tough session on Saturday morning with 2 friends - ran up a big hill, did squats, lunges and sprint relays at the top Shock, ran down the far side of the hill and then a fast flat run home. Lots of stretching but knew I would still feel it later.

I then had to take DD shopping for our holiday next week, spent 4 hours in town on my feet.

By the time I got to bed, I was throbbing from the waist down. And not in a good way Grin

Anyway, all this torture is clearly paying off as today I skipped up another big hill which 8 weeks ago I couldn't even walk up without puffing. Would love to increase my speed though, so I'm off to look at Blathers mention of improving your 5k time. I've just heard of a ParkRun quite close to me so I'm going to sign up after our holiday.

Loving running in this spring weather - nearly time to put away the running tights and embrace the capris. A little gardening needed first though - the wind resistance from my hairy legs will slow me down way too much Hmm

TessTackle · 01/04/2014 10:43

Morning, just back from my first run of 2 this week. Managed 4.51miles in a combination of running and power walking. Was without my running partner again and I really struggle towards the end if I'm alone.

CQ that sounds great! I might try to convince my partner to do squats etc inbetween laps on Friday.

Re: the heckling, I get encouragement shouted from two elderly neighbours when I'm on the run home, and sometimes from the various scaffolders and builders. Never anything negative. But today 2 blokes in their twenties slowed right down next to me to call out about how "good that booty looks" Hmm it doesn't bloody look good. It looks huge! Especially in my running capris and now I'm self conscious ffs.

ThursdayLast · 01/04/2014 11:01

Whhhhyyyyy oh wwwhhhyyyyy do I accidentally pause runkeeper????
Waaaaaah Sad

TessTackle · 01/04/2014 11:33

Oh Thursday that's the worst feeling ever! Is it a route you've done before? You can try and work out your mileage and calories burnt that way?

Fishandjam · 01/04/2014 12:46

Hi de hi! Physio has said I can start running again! Though I have to start with 100m jog, 100m walk, 100m jog etc. Boo. No attempts at PBs for some while yet, I fear.

Well done on all the great runs everyone else has been having in this nice weather Grin

briteside · 01/04/2014 15:20

Hello! I am a long term lurker on this thread, coming out of hiding to join the chat.

I have been running for about a year now - I signed up to a half marathon last year. I was doing it for charity...now I am hooked. Albeit still the slowest runner ever!

Has anyone else gained weight since they started running? Towards the end of last year I used running as an excuse to eat anything I wanted, now I am trying to have more balance... Blush

Sirzy · 01/04/2014 15:31

Hi briteside

That's good fishandjam

Managed to run 4 miles again. I was losing hope that I would never do it again being a drama queen. Anyway it was a good run so feeling more confident about my 10k at the start of June.

pinkflaming0 · 01/04/2014 18:11

Hi. I'm new here.

Just been for my first 5k run since February. Managed to keep going in the cold but the wimped out when the weather got really wet. Now it's lighter and warmer I can get back out into the countryside rather than running round the streets in the dark - much more pleasant.

Have been doing an exercise DVD (30 day shred) in the meantime and have been pleasantly surprised how my running endurance has held up though pace has suffered.

Hurt my hip dancing a few weeks ago so that probably slowed me down a bit too!

Anyway, doing 5k Race for Life on 8 June so want to get back up to speed. Aiming to run 3 times a week - not sure if I'll manage that though.

cinnamongreyhound · 01/04/2014 19:58

Hi briteside and pinkflaming0! I lost weight when running but I was calorie counting, I can see how easy it is to think I've run so I can have extra, plus it does make me more hungry.

That's great news fishandjam!

Hallelouja, I know what you mean I always doubt my ability to run as far as I do! Glad you feel happier now though.
