As the first thread ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1948631-Is-there-a-general-running-thread? ) is now pretty much full time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who runs no matter how fast or slow or how long you run for to discuss all things running!

yoube that's great!

I did a "recovery" run this morning after Sunday's long run - 6 km but I was painfully slow! Tired legs, I guess, plus I was awake from about 1.40 to 4.30 with sicky boy.

I then did a gym session with personal trainer so that was an hour of weights, abs and stuff, plus 10 mins on a bike and five mins of stretching. I should sleep well tonight. I have told personal trainer that I'm going to train for a HM. He is unlikely to let me forget now Grin

I used to not listen to music at all, ever. Then when I redid the 5k programme using the Guardian beginner runner podcasts, back in September/October, I got quite into listening to music. Then I stopped as I thought it was making me a bit manic! Now I've started again but am listening to slightly different stuff - not so much dance-orientated.

cinnamon that's a good point about it not being available during HM.

originalpiratematerial · 25/03/2014 19:08

Ohone - that's an idea - will look out for those. I had not thought of the chafing issue ...

Sirzy · 25/03/2014 19:11

You must be knackered orignial

Yoube - I never believe it when I have done well always check the map for a GPS fault

I hope i can use music during my HM, there again at least then there are other people around to focus on!

I'm eating so much at the minute. I'm like The Very Hungry Caterpillar! Yesterday:
Scrambled egg on toast
3 lamb cutlets with salad and a big pile of rice
Pasta with pesto, plus cold roast beef and mackerel in tomato sauce.
Ovaltine and six squares dark chocolate.
Today:
Banana
Ham, cheese and tomato croissant and a fruit salad.
Chickpea curry and brown rice.
Bounce ball
Fishfinger sandwiches and chips and peas plus half a shepherds pie

I always end up starving after a run, especially after a 'long' run. Slightly counterproductive to weight loss efforts!

I run therefore I eat Grin

EATmum · 25/03/2014 20:38

I stopped listening to music when I started running more/longer distances because I got bored. I do podcasts (R4 Fri night comedy; Desert Island Discs), but now I'm into audible I'm catching up on my reading while I run. It only really works with page-turner type books but keeps me running longer sometimes if I need to know what happens next!

cinnamongreyhound · 25/03/2014 20:43

Shouldn't it be 'I eat, therefore I run' ThursdayLast? Grin

ThursdayLast · 25/03/2014 20:44

Works both ways with me cinnamon!

Dharmalovesdraco · 25/03/2014 20:44

I went to a beginners running club for the first time tonight. I mistakenly thought that I'd be ok as I run 3-4 times a week 4-5k distance. Oh My God I was shit Grin Everyone was lovely though and I'm definitely going back for more.

cinnamongreyhound · 25/03/2014 20:50

Training is tough DharmalovesDraco! I haven't been for ages due to work and I haven't got slower but I always hated it! Much prefer a lovely run in the countryside :)

Sirzy · 25/03/2014 21:04

I haven't been brave enough to try a running club yet! Running alone I can convince myself I am good!

Dharmalovesdraco · 25/03/2014 21:13

I just need something to keep me focused and on track and I figured that a running club would be the way to do it. I can't get over how lovely people were, and motivating at the right moments. Now it's over I can't wait for next week Wink

cinnamongreyhound · 25/03/2014 21:53

My club is like that, everyone is included and it's all about doing the best for you not being as good as someone else. My club won a local cross country trophy this weekend, took the title from a much bigger club who've had it for 20 years! It was a lovely atmosphere, from people who all support each other!

Blatherskite · 25/03/2014 22:35

Running clubs are brilliant! It's so nice to have a group of people to meet up with and go running. You learn new routes, new techniques, have someone to chat to on the way round...

I must like them - I joined 3! Blush

I seem to have hurt myself. I'm getting pain in my inner calf and all around my knee, especially when u go from crouching to standing or similar. Any ideas what it could be?

thefemaleJoshLyman · 26/03/2014 06:22

Oh no Tess, that is disappointing. Sorry I have no idea what it could be but someone will. Perhaps ice it and rest? Definitely take ibuprofen if you can.

I want to join a running club but my local one goes out at 6.30pm which is just too early for me.

Mitchy1nge · 26/03/2014 09:21

don't know either Tess but hope rest, ice, elevation etc help

love my running clubs too, one is a proper affiliated one and the other much less earnest but they're both great

Yeehaw · 26/03/2014 09:40

Still granny jogging along. I went for a longer run than normal this morning but my phone ran out of battery so Runkeeper couldnt track it. I think it was about 3.5k, I did walk for a few minutes at the top of a big hill. I took the dogs and it was really nice. Felt slightly rushed as had to get back before dcs had finished breakfast as dh has a routine in the morning that can't be disturbed Hmm ie he will just disappear upstairs to get himself ready while kids go feral downstairs.

One day I might actually start to feel like a runner. I haven't got to that point yet, I'm very slow and unfit.

vladthedisorganised · 26/03/2014 10:51

Motivating myself to get out the door this lunchtime after a disappointing run on Monday. Very tired legs (again up a lot with coughing child who then decided to wake early) and ended up with sore shins - strange that 3.8 miles is a 'dammit!" run now where in July it would have been a 'wow!!' sort of run.

Rested up yesterday in the hope that sore shins might have some time to recover, and made the mistake of looking at my HM map. Really bricking it now - it's not till September but it's quite hilly.. Sad

Blatherskite · 26/03/2014 13:56

It sounds like you've pulled a muscle Tess so I would definitely try RICE-ing (Rest Ice Compression and Elevation) if you can. Might be worth seeing a physio if you can?

I'm finally feeling like a runner again after months of illness and injury and have seen 2 different physios for various things. Ran a 5k parkrun course PB this morning so they're definitely helping :)

feetheart · 26/03/2014 14:11

Yeehaw - if you are running you are 'a runner'. Had to persuade a lady I talked to whilst doing the Great North Run last year that she really was a runner even if she still didn't think she was - this was at about mile 9 Shock

Sirzy · 26/03/2014 15:56

Exactly Feet - doesn't matter how fast or slow you are if you are out running your a runner.

Hope injries and illnesses clear up soon!

"if you are running you are 'a runner'"

I agree. I love thinking of myself as a runner. Even better when I entered my 10k , I got a letter back saying" Dear Athelete".

I was thrilled. Can I really call myself an athlete now. me who was picked last for games at school.

No running for me today. Did about 7k yesterday with some short informal fartlek style intervals thrown in. Running at speed felt quite fun!
