As the first thread ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1948631-Is-there-a-general-running-thread? ) is now pretty much full time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who runs no matter how fast or slow or how long you run for to discuss all things running!

Well, from memory, the first and clearest no-no was a daily high dose of vitamin C - Dh was taking Berocca every day, and since cutting it out has seen a huge improvement. Who knew?

I also remember strawberries can be inflammatory. And we now add flaxseed to our porridge, it has loads of beneficial properties including being anti-inflammatory.

Less red meat and alcohol of course Sad, and lots more fish, esp oily fish, in our diet.

Those are the main habits we've adopted.

The most eye-opening fact I found when researching arthritis was that the body's fat cells actually produce an inflammatory chemical. So as well as putting more strain on my joints by being overweight, my lovely fat cells are actually creating inflammation. Shock

This was the single most persuasive fact that has motivated me to get moving on my weight loss journey again. And running is the best fat burning activity I can think of!

thats great thanks, and is probably another reason why my knees are so much better now i am shredding weight

We were discussing this just yesterday.
I have had a bad knee since a childhood injury. Doctors can't really diagnose anything but it my right knee has a sticky outy lump under the kneecap.
Even though I'm running in roads most of the time now, I think that building up slowly has actually strengthened it. Before I have rushed into getting fit, looking for a quick fix and my knee has often been part of the reason it didn't work.

So I would recommend slow progress. But I also know how boring that can seem Smile

EauRouge · 24/03/2014 16:49

I just wear a sports bra. If it's a good sports bra and (most importantly) it's the right size then you shouldn't need to wear two bras.

smee · 24/03/2014 17:01

Slow sounds good to me Thursday..! Interesting all that info on the anti-inflammatory foods CQ. Arthritis runs in the family - my dad's crippled with it - so I should look into it all for that reason alone. I don't eat red meat, but a glass of wine or several has been known to be downed… I think I'll just keep going and building up slowly. It isn't getting worse, so maybe it'll get better with time.

cinnamongreyhound · 24/03/2014 17:06

I don't know about knees but I tend to not like the idea that you must stop doing something because of a weakness, mostly there's a way to strengthen that weakness. Perhaps building up slowly will help, running on grass/softer ground will definitely help as will gait analysis and therefore the correct shoes. I had some knee pain but between runs rather than during and now I'm running further it is totally gone, and I am now a neutral runner rather than over pronating which apparently comes from stronger muscles. My knee pain started when I injured my groin and I assume I was running differently to over compensate. If you have knee problems generally I highly recommend c jointin from holland and barret, my dh suffers with his joints and he's tried lots of combinations of glucosamine/cod liver oil/chondroitin and he's found these tablets are far better than anything else he's tried. They are expensive but we try and get them on offer!

I can't advise on the bra front, since I lost weight I went from a 38G to a 32DD so don't even need a sports bra.

Stomach cramps a bit better today and I have worked so I am going to run tonight with my doggy running friends and make an appointment tomorrow at least with a nurse.

Sirzy · 24/03/2014 17:10

how much weight did you lose cinamon?

As I have lost my cup size hasn't changed, i have gone for 38e to 32e so they just look bigger now. I have 2 shock absorbers bras and both are great

Cinnamon how can you not need a sports bra?! Surely they still move, isn't it uncomfortable?

sassytheFIRST · 24/03/2014 17:24

On sports bras...I have comedy 30jjs and the sports bra on its ow n copes v well. Need replacing more often than most peoples though!

TessTackle · 24/03/2014 17:32

Jesus Sassy I thought my sister was large a 28GG!
Thanks, I'm going to have to go and get fitted and try some on.

Blatherskite · 24/03/2014 19:59

I'm a 28GG and got my sports bras fitted at Bravissimo. Love that place.

HaveTeaWillSurvive · 24/03/2014 20:14

Hi everyone - can I join in for some motivation please Smile

Just back from W1R2 of c25k and feeling really pleased with myself for getting out even though it's dark and cold out there. Started it last autumn but only got to week 4 - fingers crossed I can do it this time!

ThursdayLast · 24/03/2014 20:17

Much better time of year to start HaveTea!
And you'll probably find those four weeks will have given you a base fitness for this time around Grin
Welcome, this thread is EXCELLENT motivation
My safari page is currently open on the payment page of a local HM, just waiting to discuss it with DP before I hit paypal ShockShockShock

Sirzy I am toying with the idea of RunHackney which is a half-marathon in Hackney (where I live) on 22 June. If I can run 7.5 miles now, I figure I could just about get up to half-marathon distance by then.

originalpiratematerial · 24/03/2014 20:55

On the subject of running bras - I have various ones including a Nike one and a LA Gear one but my Shock Absorber one is my favourite one. They do size up differently to Bravissimo though. I am a 32E in Bravissimo bras but can't get in smaller than a 34 in the Shock Absorber ones.

cinnamongreyhound · 24/03/2014 21:27

I lost 5 1/2st Sirzy.

They're fine in a normal bra TessTackle, don't notice them moving at all. Out of a bra I hold onto them of I run upstairs so they do still move Wink. Sadly not much volume to them, the joys of being between 13 and 18 1/2st my whole adult life and now 9 1/2!

Hi HaveTeaWillSurvive! I did c25k jan 2012 love it as a program, welcome :)

Go for it ThursdayLast!

Sirzy · 24/03/2014 21:32

I have another sartorial question Grin

I am wondering whether to buy some actual running shorts for the summer. Normally I run in capris, or tights in the winter, and I have some knee length ones too, but I do get terribly hot running even in cold weather. Last year I was going great guns until the weather got hot and then I just found it terribly hard to run. But although my legs have never been in better nick, I am still a bit Hmm about the idea of being seen out in shorts! Does anyone else wear them?

ThursdayLast · 24/03/2014 22:13

Originalpirate,
I wear shorts! Last summer was the only summer I have run in DS was 3/4mo in that heatwave so the only time I saw any sun was when I went running! But I live v rural and hardly see anyone when I run Grin

I'm trying to decide between Eden Project HM in Oct, or Truro in Sept. I'm all about being prepared, so I feel I need lots of time to get ready. I can do 8.5 now.

DP was under the impression a HM was inevitable...

Sirzy · 24/03/2014 22:22

Eden project would be pretty steep wouldn't it? Very nice location though!

I am starting the summer months in capris, can't see me braving shorts yet!

OP posts:
cinnamongreyhound · 24/03/2014 22:29

Eden project sounds fab!!

I have shorts but don't wear them often as I have hideous legs and am quite self conscious. In the summer I sometimes don't run until 9pm to avoid the hear it start at 6 :)

ThursdayLast · 24/03/2014 22:31

Funny you should say that sirzy, I ran my 6 miles there yesterday.
It was basically half a mile uphill, half a mile downhill. And repeat.
Grin
There is literally NOWHERE flat in Cornwall Grin

originalpiratematerial · 24/03/2014 22:42

Thanks Thursday! Hmm, will ponder...the weather has gone back to chilly, hasn't it, so I probably don't need to make any hasty decisions...
