As the first thread ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1948631-Is-there-a-general-running-thread? ) is now pretty much full time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who runs no matter how fast or slow or how long you run for to discuss all things running!

Ah, I am so craving the HM thing now too Smile

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 23/03/2014 21:25

That does sound a challenging "fun" run CQ Smile Well done on getting back to it after a break!

Sirzy · 23/03/2014 21:31

CQ that sounds fab given the less than ideal conditions.

I have arranged a lift to somewhere I can run along a flat straight road (with footpaths) rather than the normally hilly bendy bits here on tuesday morning.

Original - find one for the end of year give yourself a target

I love how this thread is helping us keep each other motivated

Well done those who ran competitively today.

I'm toying with the Cardiff HM in the autumn - my sister has run it twice and is planning to run again this year (she's about to do the London marathon so Proper Fit...) I haven't mentioned it to anyone in RL...will see how I go through the summer and decide maybe June ish.

TessTackle · 23/03/2014 22:54

hello?
I'm going for my first solo run tomorrow. I'm petrified and have been sent here for some encouragement Blush

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 23/03/2014 23:11

Jell TessGrin

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 23/03/2014 23:13

That should of course say hello Tess. Now I understand what people mean about posting from their phoneSmile

TessTackle · 23/03/2014 23:26

Grin hello OhOne!

sassytheFIRST · 24/03/2014 07:02

Tess, good luck. Get your iPod on with some good tunes (strangely, I find naff power ballads easier to run to than clubby rhythms...!), pull your cap down and off you go. I like running alone, there's no head space thing going on for me but it is an hour when no one wants me. And I notice things - flowers, blossom etc.

TessTackle · 24/03/2014 08:25

Morning sassy I'm all kitted up ready to go, just got to hey miniTess off to nursery first. I don't own a cap yet I can do this!

EATmum · 24/03/2014 09:28

You can totally do it Tess - I was in your (running) shoes 18 months ago and ran a half marathon yesterday. May never walk again but no matter It's just a matter of starting small and building up. I never thought I would be "a runner" but it happened - and I wish now I'd got started before I was 40! Good luck and enjoy it. Are you doing a c25k? That was how I got started.

Sirzy · 24/03/2014 09:30

Enjoy Tess.

Not quite feeling up to running today so going for a 3 mile power walk to town to get bits i need for DS at school

wow amazingly well done everyone yesterday :)

TessTackle · 24/03/2014 10:04

I'm home. Really struggled today, I'm so disappointed in myself. The sun was too much and I didn't pace myself enough at the beginning :(

Wow, well done EAT and to all the runners!

I broke the 5-mile barrier and managed 6 miles in 52 minutes on Saturday (which I was quite pleased with, given two very large hills in the middle) - I'd intended to do just over 5 but took a wrong turning somewhere! Legs felt like jelly at the end but it's nice to know I can do it. 4 miles today and hoping for a repeat on Saturday..

Tess, you can do it! Whatever you manage, you're still lapping everyone on the couch :)

EauRouge · 24/03/2014 10:54

Tess- you had a bad run, don't beat yourself up :) Every so often I have one that makes me want to chuck my running shoes in the bin. It's normal! At least you know where you want to improve. Have you got running sunglasses? I've just got cheapo ones, but they are lightweight, comfy and do the job.

TessTackle · 24/03/2014 11:01

Eau it was the change in temp from the sun rather than the sun in my eyes. My left calf is really sore too, despite stretching. I think I pushed myself too hard on Friday.

I thought I have no time to run until Thursday now but I'm going to go for half an hour tomorrow before my meetings and see if I can do better.

Sirzy · 24/03/2014 11:25

Tess everyone has bad runs but at least you got out there and ran!

Thanks Sirzy I'm now looking at getting a new sports bra; mine feels like it digs in to the back of my neck.

Are the ones with smallish straps any good? I've got quite big boobs.

EauRouge · 24/03/2014 12:12

I'm a 30F and I have this one. If you haven't had a fitting recently then make sure you get one! Not at M&S, they're shite.

ThursdayLast · 24/03/2014 14:18

I have an ancient Shock Absorber sports bra. I didn't think it has been worth buying a new one what with all the being pregnant and breast feeding and all, but I think the time is nigh.
I'll be interested in recommendations too.

I drove home via some of my running roads today, trying to recce a longer route and I got lost! DS fell asleep and was v grumpy when we got home Grin

smee · 24/03/2014 14:28

Total lightweight newbie here with a question. I have been running 2-3k 3 times a week, but it clobbers my knees (they ache and creak). Not too sure if this is because I'm getting used to it, or if it's my body warning me to stop. Any thoughts?! Am 48 so not exactly spring chicken material, but not overweight and have good running trainers (well good enough!) I don't want to stop as am getting the bug.

CQ · 24/03/2014 15:30

Following a MN recommendation years ago, I have Moving Comfort - Juno bras - love 'em. I have 3, they have washed and washed and washed, I think I've had them for about 4 years now so probably time for a replacement. Nothing moves.

Hi Smee - nice to see another not-exactly-spring-chicken runner! I'm 48 too and my knees do complain, but I figure it's better than my heart complaining and giving out on me for getting fat and unhealthy.

I did some research into diets for arthritis as DH gets it in his knees, and I think we've both benefited from avoiding inflammatory foods.

I was also told that doing some lunges mid-run is a really good way of forcing the synovial fluid back around your knee joints to keep everything lubricated. Seems logical but not sure if there's any science behind it!

TessTackle · 24/03/2014 15:35

I have another question about sports bras. Do you all just wear the sports bra? Or a bra underneath? Thanks!

Sirzy · 24/03/2014 15:35

Which foods do you avoid then? I have always had knee issues but thankfully most of the time they seem fairly happy running
