As the first thread ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1948631-Is-there-a-general-running-thread? ) is now pretty much full time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who runs no matter how fast or slow or how long you run for to discuss all things running!

Mitchy - they would be 3/4 on me too then! I end up with excess material at the bottom of my full length tights as they are way to long

Mitchy1nge · 21/03/2014 17:10

I wouldn't mind if I was actually short but I'm about 5'4, just not very well proportioned Grin

ihaveadirtydog · 21/03/2014 17:39

Forerunner 10 sounds popular then! Is there anything out there that gives you feedback through headphones like the aps do? Or am I asking too much?

My running leggings are pineapple ones. They are about 2 inches too long but will do the job for now.

Mitchy1nge · 21/03/2014 17:47

I can't run with headphones, I have tried but it's not for me.

there's a virtual coach in every garmin watch but it's just an annoying bleeping noise (maybe am not using it properly Grin)

Sirzy · 21/03/2014 17:55

I'm only 5 ft 1 and with very short legs so no hope for me!

Can I ask a stupid question? I ran Monday, was meant to go again Wednesday but came down with a cold, I'm feeling much better today still with a thickly cough and a bit of a runny nose - but in starting to feel twitchy that I haven't been out, not because I love to run but because of the worry that I'll undo all I've done over the past 12 weeks. So my question is 'how long a gap can you leave between runs before I'm rubbish again and need to start over?'

EauRouge · 21/03/2014 18:08

I read somewhere that you start to lose fitness after 10 days but I imagine you would have to leave it quite a long time before you were back to square one.

Sirzy · 21/03/2014 18:09

I didn't run for a month over Christmas and was ok when I got back into if

I suppose it depends upon things like how much running you usually do and how long you've been doing it for and whether you are able to replace/supplement it with other activities that boost your aerobic capacity?

I've recently (since December/Jan) gone from running quite a lot of miles to hardly any and was surprised that it was possible to just go out and run 10 miles after a longish break, it didn't help my calf strain and I felt tired but my basic fitness wasn't as compromised as I'd thought. You will know already that even if you are starting from scratch it builds surprisingly quickly and easily.

Dharmalovesdraco · 21/03/2014 18:25

I run 3/4 times a week usually 4 to 5k in distance depending on time and how in feeling. If I have another night off I could technically run Saturday and Sunday and still hit my 3 times a week minimum target. I haven't done anything exercise wise since Monday as felt rubbish and couldn't face anything other than my sofa!!

Thanks though for the reassurance - might brave Parkrun if I have a good nights sleep

cinnamongreyhound · 21/03/2014 19:58

If I run long distances my back starts to ache towards the end ThursdayLast but usually 10 miles plus. I assume it's just being on my feet that long and perhaps not great running posture.

Hi ihaveadirtydog! I have a garmin 110, it doesn't have loads of functions but tells you time, distance and pace as well as beeping and telling pace per lap (which I set to a mile).

I always recommend karrimor sirzy, last well and start at £9.99 from sports direct.

A week will be ok DhamaLovesDraco, give parkrun a go tomorrow if you feel ok but Sunday will definitely be fine.

Sirzy · 21/03/2014 20:01

£9.99 sounds good.

Dharma - i have had a horrible cold virus all week and any attempt to run is ending is disaster. Hopefully will manage to get out tomorrow. Hope you make it to the park run

I'm ill too, and really hope I'm well enough for my first 10km race on Sunday. Have a cold and felt a bit rough today at work. Hoping a good night's sleep and doing nothing much tomorrow (apart from volunteering at parkrun) will help as I really want to get over the hurdle and say that I've done a 10km. Hope you feel better Dharma and Sirzy and can run again soon

thefemaleJoshLyman · 22/03/2014 11:59

Does anyone else get twitchy when they haven't run for a few days? I think I am properly addicted. No Parkrun for me today, my first proper 10k tomorrow, really nervous. I volunteered which was fab and met a lady who is running tomorrow and we want to do similar times, so hopefully we can spur each other on.

ThursdayLast · 22/03/2014 12:58

I did the same today femaleJosh, I really enjoyed volunteering too. Felt like part of the team and started making some friends too I think.

But my back hurt more standing on the finish line than it does when I run.
I am officially a weed

Sirzy · 22/03/2014 15:14

Good luck tomorrow femalejosh and space chimo.

yup i get like that too, edging to get out!

originalpiratematerial · 22/03/2014 16:38

Lol, I've just realised that I said on here I was doing a 3 mile charity run - it's 6 miles - how did I get that wrong!

Things have gone a bit pear-shaped though as I felt my right shin a bit on Thursday morning when running and sure enough, it has some tender spots now that I think may be the beginning of the dreaded shin splints, so i've iced them and have taken it easy yesterday and today. Plus I have some viral thing going on, upset stomach, lumpy throat etc - not really bad, but I don't feel like running either! I hope that I'm well enough, on both fronts, to get out tomorrow. I really should be doing a fairly long run, I feel.

originalpiratematerial · 22/03/2014 16:38

Yes, good luck space chimp and femaleJosh!

Dharmalovesdraco · 22/03/2014 18:54

Good luck tomorrow spacechip and femalejosh

I never made Parkrun but I did manage a gentle 4k with some friends at a run walk - I still feel like someone is sat on my chest though :(

Hope my fellow lurgy sufferers are feeling better

spacechimp · 22/03/2014 19:42

I'm not going to race tomorrow. Have been in denial about how crap I am feeling because I so wanted to do the 10km. But I have realised I need to rest, though feel really disappointed. I have signed up for a 10km in May so will hopefully make that one, and actually might look for one sooner just to make myself feel more positive. Good luck for tomorrow femalejosh and anyone else racing. Get well soon all fellow ill/injured runners

Sirzy · 22/03/2014 19:48

thats a shame spacechimp but sensible.

hope you feel better soon Dhrma, i didn't go out today but feeling much better so will try a couple of km tomorrow

I'm counting down in hours now to half marathon tomorrow. Strange mix of nerves and excitement. Just hope I don't show myself up really. Smile

Sirzy · 22/03/2014 20:06

good luck eat, enjoy it!

Ooooh Eatmum, I forgot you were doing a HM tomorrow!
How exciting, I hope you get some sleep tonight, is it early?

I'm running for Sport Relief tomorrow, but not until 4pm! Don't quite know how I'm going to manage my eating, it's a bit of a funny time.

Good luck to everyone, and I hope everyone feels tip top soon x

Mitchy1nge · 22/03/2014 20:11

which half EAT? was supposed to do one tomorrow too

good luck, am looking forward to all these race reports
