As the first thread ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1948631-Is-there-a-general-running-thread? ) is now pretty much full time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who runs no matter how fast or slow or how long you run for to discuss all things running!

I can't really get out to do parkrun - too much going on in our house on Saturday mornings Sad.

feetheart · 19/03/2014 19:05

Too busy in our house on a Sat too originalpiratematerial and closest one is 20 miles away!
Don't worry too much about it, you have the 3 mile one to get used to annoyed by other people and you never know, you might like being surrounded by like minded souls :)
I also did my first half marathon at 49, and second one last autumn at 51, so you are not alone.

sassytheFIRST · 19/03/2014 19:07

Had a really tough run today, reversed the usual 5k route so I had longer but less steep hills. It was a struggle and I ended up walking on at least 5 occasions. Boo. Took longer too, 34 mins as opposed to 31.

New sports bra might have impeded comfy breathing ? It's VG re bouncing though! Also warmer than I'm used to as usually run early morning and today was 2pm and sunny? Who knows.

cinnamongreyhound · 19/03/2014 21:18

I agree originalpiratematerial, start the training now :) your 3 miles race can just be one of your runs. I've never followed a program just gradually built up miles to max of 12. Don't let age stop you, I run with a guy who is 54 and doing the London marathon he can 14th in the 10k race we did Sunday.

I know what you mean about the races but that shouldn't put you off! I think the fastest 10k I've seen is about 34mins. On Sunday there was a duathalon with 5k run, 18k bike, 5k run as well as the 10k I did and the fastest man completed it all in 1hr 21m!!!!!!

cinnamongreyhound · 20/03/2014 07:21

Very speedy run with my friend this morning, averaged 9m 15 per mile Shock with chatting!

Mitchy1nge · 20/03/2014 08:43

hi Eau I hope I'll be ok for September, it's not that far off is it?

am just going to try doing small slow runs every other day (two days off in a row was bad for me) and keep up the stretches, all those stupid things stem from one injury which was caused by overuse/failure to stretch and recover properly

the weather is just too perfect not to get out there at the moment! but am going to try to run on roads or tracks with a fairly even surface for now

sassytheFIRST · 20/03/2014 17:54

Treadmill run today, hard and quick. Helped me get confidence back after awful run yesterday.

EATmum · 20/03/2014 20:05

I will be happy just to complete the HM; really don't care about my time. After all, it's my first and last half marathon, so even if it takes me three hours, it'll be a PB! I'm
Aiming to survive ... so any thanks for all the tips, they make a lot of sense

youbethemummylion · 20/03/2014 21:54

Got myself a headband style hat thing and went and braved the elements today it was raining and so windy I nearly got blown off the cliffs but I set a new PB over 5k and ran the furthest I have ever managed so far so it was worth it.

EATmum · 21/03/2014 09:08

Well done lion!

ThursdayLast · 21/03/2014 10:31

Well done yoube, sounds like you're living life on the edge running on cliffs!
I love to hear about a PB Grin

I just did a wildly uneventful 8.5 miles in 80 mins. No goats today.

Does anyone else get lower back ache?

Mitchy1nge · 21/03/2014 12:18

no lower back pain, no, does it happen while you are running?

am so pleased to have achieved 3 slow but more importantly virtually painless miles with my slow joggers group this morning :)

Mitchy1nge · 21/03/2014 12:25

we did get 'herded' by some beautiful but intense collies though, am glad I like dogs!

ThursdayLast · 21/03/2014 13:34

Painfree mitchy? Thats great news. Slowly slowly catchy monkey and all that.
Yeah, my back hurts while I'm running, especially near the end of a run. But I have a weak lower back anyway so it's probably just putting strain on it. Never mind, it's not debilitating Smile

ihaveadirtydog · 21/03/2014 14:49

Hi all, wondered if I could join you. I've been running for a few weeks now, workin my way through the BUpa training plan for a 10k in march.
I've been doing 5k /30 mins 3 times a week and am finally enjoying it and can understand why people get addicted!
I've been using the runtastic app on my phone but wondered if anyone had any recommendations for a fairly cheap GPS watch as I think that might be a bit more accurate. I do like the little man who talks to me on runtastic though Grin

youbethemummylion · 21/03/2014 15:00

The garmin forerunner 10 is really good I got mine for 56 it was cheaper because it was green.

EauRouge · 21/03/2014 15:15

I've got a forerunner 10 as well and I would recommend it.

Mitchy1nge · 21/03/2014 15:21

I can also recommend the FR10, I only talked myself into an upgrade because I liked the look of the purple 220

Mitchy1nge · 21/03/2014 15:21

hello ihaveadirtydog, great name Grin

Sirzy · 21/03/2014 15:46

Hi Ihaveadirty dog.

Mitchy - I liked the look of the purple 220. Sticking with my phone until christmas though when hopefully santa will be nice!

Great name ihaveadirtydog. I have two!!

Thursdaylast have you noticed your back pain on all runs or just intermittently? I have a friend with back trouble who has to be very careful where she runs and on what surface - for her, she needs smooth even pavements and roads and can't run on trails or bumpy paths. But for another friend, it's the jarring of hard roads that does her in and she sticks to the woods and fields.

Might be worth keeping a diary of when and where and after how long it starts to hurt?

Sirzy · 21/03/2014 15:51

I need some new capri pants but without breaking the bank - any suggestions?

I did like the look of the ascis muscle support ones, but at £60 a pair I will make do with achy muscles!

EauRouge · 21/03/2014 15:57

I've got these, they're such a good fit and reasonably priced too.

Mitchy1nge · 21/03/2014 16:48

I've got some similar to Eau's but black and silver, supposed to be knee length but awkwardly more 3/4 (my stupidly short limbs) nike dri fit tech women's running something or other

I think this is them, but mine seem to have more reflective silver stuff on the outside seams Confused

ThursdayLast · 21/03/2014 16:50

Thats good advice CQ, thank you.
Now you mention it, it does seem worse now I'm running on roads, but then I'm also running further. Who knows?! I thought it might be my posture???
