As the first thread ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1948631-Is-there-a-general-running-thread? ) is now pretty much full time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who runs no matter how fast or slow or how long you run for to discuss all things running!

Yay, another lovely parkrun done!
Next week I'm back up time keeper -eek, seems like a lot of responsibility Smile

feetheart · 15/03/2014 10:26

4.8 miles in 50 mins this morning - a new PB and 55.3% on the age-graded thingie.
I've set myself the goal of getting to 60% in the next 6 mths - I have no idea if this is doable at all but wanted to challenge myself as I run on my own and can give most of you on here 10, 20 or even 30 years Shock

cinnamongreyhound · 15/03/2014 10:44

Don't stress ThursdayLast, thumb presses button to start index finger presses button every time someone crosses the line :)

CoffeeBucks · 15/03/2014 10:54

Hello

I started running two years ago & progress has been slow but steady - I was initially a bit prone to quitting if I had a bad run or a slow time. Since last summer I have been running more regularly and incorporating interval training to gain speed, as that is now my issue; I can run a fair distance but am slow & want to be faster. I am hovering at 31-32 mins for a 5k and really want to be sub 30.

I run 3-4 times a week, also do body pump & kettlebells, and cycle at the weekends and sometimes cycle to work as well.

Well done feet heart!
Hi coffee!
Thank cinnamon, I was hoping it was going to be something like that Grin I'm actually looking forward to chatting properly with some of the people that run it. And cheering everyone on down the finish straight!

youbethemummylion · 15/03/2014 11:09

Yay a PB today of 5k in 39mins!!!!!! I know loads of you are faster but im still a bit chuffed with myself!

EauRouge · 15/03/2014 11:14

Well done on the PB! Sod how fast everyone else is, a PB is a PB.

Been to the podiatrist who says my toenail will get better on its own and I'm fine to go running as long as I keep an eye on it. I can't go today but hopefully tomorrow, if DH's lurgy clears up a bit.

HalleLouja · 15/03/2014 11:16

I am not sure if I have posted in this thread before. I finished the c25k a couple of months ago and have mainly been working on 5k. Though by start of June am running 10k so now trying to build up.

Anyways the other day I had the best run ever. Except my GPS didn't work. I plotted in on runkeeper but think that over egged my run. Oh well it has given me lots of confidence and think it was 4 miles or thereabout.

I am starting to enjoy running a bit now especially as I am getting faster and stronger.

HalleLouja · 15/03/2014 11:20

I also do pilates and hiit class plus sometimes my friend's LBT class. I think the HIIT is helping with my cardio / strength. But my times are definitely improving. I used to run 5k 36 mins and now its nearer 32 minutes.

Sirzy · 15/03/2014 13:44

I was thinking about doing some Pilates type exercise but no clases locally so would need to be a DVD/YouTube stuff

Well done! My current parkrun age grade is 56.89% feetheart and that took some getting for me. Having only been running for two years and I'm in my early thirties so I don't have a great chance of getting higher.

Hi CoffeeBucks! I always recommend interval training for improving speed but just running more often and trying to speed up when I felt ok worked for me up to a certain point too.

Well done youbethemummylion!! Speed doesn't matter, a pb is your improvement and that's all that matters.

Good news EauRouge!

Hi HalleLouja, well done on your run! Sounds like a good way to your 10k :) glad you're enjoying it.

I got a on at parkrun today, by 35 seconds! I was going for it but taking that much off has scared me that I'll never get another pb!

cinnamongreyhound · 15/03/2014 19:12

pb not on.

ThursdayLast · 15/03/2014 19:18

Well done cinnamon!
I'd be boggled too if I got a 35 second improvement!
I was 5 seconds off my PB, but I was supposed to be taking it easy Smile

Sirzy I can highly recommend pilates. I go to proper classes now after an emcs, I'm afraid I don't know much about good dvds though.

cinnamongreyhound · 15/03/2014 19:35

Whoops 25 seconds, fat fingers Blush

Sirzy · 15/03/2014 19:53

On the age grading thing is the aim to get a low %?

OP posts:
cinnamongreyhound · 15/03/2014 20:01

No high, the closer to 100% you are the better you are for your age. It's means you're better than whatever % you are in your age category.

orangeflutie · 15/03/2014 20:10

Hi it's great to read about all the good runs and PBs.

I'm due to go out tomorrow on a long run but have a sore area on the inner curve of my heel. Thought it might be a blister as I've done the last two short runs in new trainers. Not a blister though so now a bit worriedHmm I guess I'll just have to try running tomorrow and really hope it doesn't cause a problem.

Good to hear your toenail's better EauRougeSmile

Fishandjam · 15/03/2014 20:26

Well done yoube, that's a great PB! Don't compare yourself to anyone else, that way lies discontent (and medial tibial stress syndrome, as I now know to my cost Sad) And you'll probably get faster anyway as the weeks go by.

Welcome coffee. Forgive me, but I don't consider a 32 min 5k slow!

Eau, good news on your toe. Parkrun next weekend? I am forbidden any running until I can stand having DS kick my lower shin without emitting a howl of agony. So in an effort to not blob out, I will be....riding a bike. A&E is on standby. (I am RUBBISH at bike riding. Never really learned as a kid, and am incredibly wobbly and nervous. Argh!)

Sirzy · 15/03/2014 20:29

Thanks cinnamon.

Good luck on the bike fish, I am the same never mastered the art of bike riding, I am sure you will be fine though!

OP posts:
EauRouge · 15/03/2014 20:33

It is not true what they say about riding a bike. I rode a bike recently after a 15 (possibly longer) year break and it was terrifying- I was rubbish.

Hoping to Parkrun next weekend, will have to see what our plans are.

Fishandjam · 15/03/2014 21:00

cinnamon, good work on your PB!

feetheart, 55% is very good when you consider that's 55% of the fastest person in the world in your age category.

Hello Halle, your 5k progress sounds great too. Another 32 minuter! Am envious.

cinnamongreyhound · 15/03/2014 21:03

You put that much better than me Fishandjam!

NinetyNinePercentTroll · 15/03/2014 21:03

I agree re bikes, eau. DH insisted that we all got bikes last summer and I'm scared to death on mine. I hate roads. I hate going downhill (feel like I'm wobbling out of control and won't stop at the end/will go over the handlebars - prob goes back to a very nasty 'off' I had as a kid which was as a result of a very fast downhill).

Gym visit today - x trainer, recumbent bike & a short, sharp 4k treadmill run.

Perhaps a 10k hilly road run tomorrow. I'll see how I feel. I've got a blister on the ball of my right foot that will bother me on a more demanding stretch, I think.

well done to all the parkrunners and PB'ers. Hurrah!

MrsFrankTurner · 16/03/2014 10:09

I am chucking at the image of a fish on a bike fishandjam Wink

Went out for an 18 miler yesterday and had to do another SOS to DH as something in the arch of my foot 'pinged' 7 miles in Hmm was absolutely gutted as I felt great and was all fuelled up! Nearly carried on but the fear of doing long term damage stopped me.

Going out this afternoon to try again as foot feels fine today -3 weeks today ARGH!!!

Btw I love riding my bike......on a deserted road when nobody is around! I hate cars & other cyclists the whole thing really stresses meShock that's why I love running I don't have to worry too much about other people getting in my way Wink

NinetyNinePercentTroll · 16/03/2014 10:54

18mile run, mrsfrank ?! Need [awestruck] smiley.

Could only squeeze a 'quick' (hahaha -36min), sunny 5k today as got DS1 & new gf coming over for sun lunch.

It's flipping warm out there and I was somewhat hampered by part of my complicated sports bra strap coming undone about 1.5k in and having to carry on regardless because I'd had to undress my top half to redo it. Bahhhhh. First time that happened and it was somewhat irritating.
