As the first thread ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1948631-Is-there-a-general-running-thread? ) is now pretty much full time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who runs no matter how fast or slow or how long you run for to discuss all things running!

I have just found out there is a 10k locally at the end of april so may sign up for that as a bit of a practise run for Manchester!

Hi everyone! Reading all your running reports has really cheered me up, especially the doggy stories. Sadly I won't be running for a bit Sad - saw a sports physio today about my shin pain and while he didn't think it was serious (as in stress fracture serious), he did think there was some significant damage to the fascia. He also roundly bollocked me for inadequate stretching (him: "I could crack rocks on your calf muscles." Me- "ooh, thanks!" Him: "it's not a compliment.") I then had a deep calf massage which almost made me cry Blush.

No running until all the pain has gone. And I need to stretch stretch and stretch again, and then he'll sort out some exercises to strengthen my weedy left side (which is probably causing stress in lower left leg). When I do run I'm limited to 5k or less, and no efforts at PBs until doing 5k feels as easy as walking.

Still, if it keeps me running, it's all to the good. Feeling a bit grumpe though, and in need of gin.

sassytheFIRST · 13/03/2014 22:14

Did my first run over 5k today. I was a bit of a wimp as I drove to the next town on the grounds that my town is vvvv hilly...but managed just over 5miles/8.5k in 53 mins. Really chuffed.

My knee is a bit sore tonight. Hope it'll sort itself out fast.

Blatherskite · 13/03/2014 22:27

Rock hard muscles are for body builders Fish not runners :)

I always find it really odd when the physio wobbles my calves around after a massage to see how soft they've gone. It feels really odd. I've been doing some Yoga stretches recently - Downward Dog, Pigeon (or King Pigeon) and Runners Stretch are all really good and they've really helped me loosen up after runs.

cinnamongreyhound · 13/03/2014 23:43

My calves are super tight Fishandjam, if one of my kids/dogs sticks a limb in to climb on my lap it's excruciating! I don't stretch and I know have very right hamstrings too but while my body seems happy in its tight equilibrium I'm not going to mess with it! Hope that your massage helps and that following the guidelines keeps you running! Any ideas why you have a weedy left side?

NinetyNinePercentTroll · 14/03/2014 08:22

Sassy, well done Grin

A frustrating 9.7km treadmill (on random hill setting) for me last night as there was a power outage just as I was about to finish my planned 10k. My treadmill cut out and all went black. Gahhhhhh. Somewhat irritating not to hit that nice round 10.

Sirzy · 14/03/2014 13:27

Only managed 2.5k today because of this cold but I ran the first 2k without stopping (normally I am a mix of walk and running) and both of them averaged 6.31min/km which is fast for me (normally around 6.50 - 7 min km)

Fish - hope you feel better soon

Well done Sassy, thats a great time!

99% - oh no frustrating!

sassytheFIRST · 14/03/2014 16:25

99% how annoying. Maybe it sensed your nickname,

CQ · 14/03/2014 17:21

Ran 7k yesterday with CQdogs - reluctant dog got let off the lead on the uphills (off road) which seemed to suit us all much better. CQdog2 does not get let off as she is a killer, but she loves to run and is quite useful in getting me up hills Grin

My times are rubbish when running with them, as we have the inevitable sniff stops, but it's better than nothing when I'm short of time.

Today just walked as my feet ached in the night - I volunteer in our local Oxfam bookshop so was on my feet all afternoon after that longish run, so my poor little plates were a bit achy.

And the sunshine has prompted me to finally get into town and buy some new walking boots for my non-running days - so much better than wellies.

Glad you were feeling well enough for a run today, Sirzy - no matter how short. Sometimes just getting back out there helps to shake off the residue of a bug, it's very easy just to keep sniffling and feeling crap and lethargic.

99% I share your pain at the not-quite-10k - that would bug the OCD element in me too!

youbethemummylion · 14/03/2014 17:31

Erm so today I discovered running on the treadmill is SO much easier than running outside! I was quite chuffed with how my training for the 10k was going and feeling quietly confident now I am not confident at all! All my training will have to be outside now I think. Oh also learned recently acquired rescue dog can't run! Had to get DH to pick is up in the car she refused point blank to move after we had finished and we were still a few miles from home! Poor thing.

Blatherskite · 14/03/2014 17:37

Treadmill running is indeed much easier youbethemummylion The floor moves on a treadmill so all you have to do is move your legs rather than having to propel yourself forward. It is good training for 'proper' running though so I'm sure you'll be even fitter in no time.

You've just reminded me - my "Death before treadmill" t-shirt should arrive tomorrow Grin

A friend and I went for a run at lunchtime today. Just a slow, short one as she is injured but we stopped at exactly 2 miles and walked the last little bit home so I feel your pain NinetyNinePercentTroll. We call that having to round up/down 'Runners OCD' and it is a killer :)

CannyBagOfTudor · 14/03/2014 17:39

Youbethemummylion - have you tried ramping up the incline on the treadmill? Treadmill running is very easy on a flat incline but you can make it much more challenging if you need to.

youbethemummylion · 14/03/2014 17:45

If I have to go back into the gym I shall play with the incline button but despite it being harder im a bit of a convert to outside running. We live next to the coast and the views today were lovely. Leaving the dog behind next time though!

youbethemummylion · 14/03/2014 17:48

Oh and 99% that would have really wound me up I cant stand it when you cant get to a round figure!

Sirzy · 14/03/2014 17:53

I much prefer outdoor running just can't get into it on the treadmill. That said when I go on holiday and I can't run I am planning on using the onboard gym a couple of times to go on the treadmill

Smilesandpiles · 14/03/2014 18:02

I know you are all doing massively brilliant things so mine pales in comparison..but sod it.

I ran 5k for the first time today. EVER. I started to take running semi seriously just before the kids broke up for Christmas. I've not been exercising for around 6 weeks because I've been busy decorating. This was my first week back. I wasn't planning on doing it, it just happened. I was miles away, just day dreaming then I looked down and there it was 5.22. in 35 minutes.

One day I'll be like you lot (just not running outside yet)

ThursdayLast · 14/03/2014 18:11

Well done smiles, any PB is just that, you should be v pleased.
Good to have you back youbemummy.

Well done everyone who got out today. My knees were not impressed with my run the other day, so they've had another day off today, planning a take-it-easy parkrun tomorrow.

ThursdayLast · 14/03/2014 18:12

Btw, I've never ever run on a treadmill.
In fact I can't even remember when I might have been in a gym.
I run so that I don't have to go to a gym Grin

Sirzy · 14/03/2014 18:22

thursday, I hate gyms. Have tried a few times and quickly got bored!

OP posts:
NinetyNinePercentTroll · 14/03/2014 19:38

I like the gym.

I try to mix TM & road and use the hill programmes to try to replicate but I find the TM easier on my knees and hips, plus, sometimes it's more practical (DD comes with me to gym - she uses other machines and also doesn't run at my pace).

NinetyNinePercentTroll · 14/03/2014 19:46

Well done smiles Smile

Jeregrette · 14/03/2014 20:08

I'm so unused to/ bad at the treadmill that when I went to have my gait analysed, I was bent over hanging onto the bars on the front and it took me ages to realise they were waiting for me to let go. I didn't realise you weren't supposed to hang on for dear life!

sassytheFIRST · 14/03/2014 20:31

I've been treadmill running for months, mainly to build my knees up and also cos I was scared of looking a twat if I ventured outside to run in public. It's got me in reasonable shape I think, I only started running outside about 2 weeks ago. Outside is so much more interesting though!

ThursdayLast · 14/03/2014 20:42

Sassy, I did the opposite - running outside, on country lanes so no one could see me Grin

Sirzy · 15/03/2014 07:31

Just finished reading running like a girl - loved it.

Can't find it in the other thread but what were the other books people were reccomending?
