As the first thread ( www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1948631-Is-there-a-general-running-thread? ) is now pretty much full time for a new one.

Thread for anyone who runs no matter how fast or slow or how long you run for to discuss all things running!

I love your gait analysis story jeregrette Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 16/03/2014 14:10

Hope it's nothing serious MrsFrankTurner!

I did a trail 10k today in 56:59 so I'm well chuffed! I did it last year as my first ever race in 1:01 something.

Jeregrette · 16/03/2014 15:12

Ninetynine Thanks Grin

Back from my 10k. Ok firstly I know a poor workman blames his tools but. It was very hot and I'm not great at running in the heat as I do most of my training after 7pm!

Did it in just under 58 minutes but my PB is about a minute faster. Still I'm pretty pleased to have got through it 6-8k were pretty tough and I thought I might have to start walking but didn't

I have to say I enjoyed it less than my half marathon last year. I don't think I realised just how difficult a distance the 10k is because you're going that bit faster for quite a distance.

Well I wasn't expecting to check in today, but the dog and I just did a quick 25 mins around the woods. More for him than me but figured I'd just as well get my gear on as take him for a walk.

Well done on your 10k jeregrette. I'm doing the 6mile for sport relief next week, so I'll know what you're talking about this time next Sunday Grin

EauRouge · 17/03/2014 08:17

I'm back!! 5k in the sunshine yesterday. It was a bit stop-start, I was a bit dehydrated I think. I really need to start drinking more. Anyway; 31.24, not bad for a couple of weeks off.

Well done on the sub-60 10ks.

ThursdayLast · 17/03/2014 09:16

Yay, well done Eau!

Sirzy · 17/03/2014 10:29

37 min 5k this morning. one of those "why am I bothering" type runs where I walked much more than I needed to which is pissing me off as I probably could have done it in under 35 if I had really tried.

Hello! 4.5 miles this lunchtime; my phone (with map and time application) conked out but I think I managed it in 50 minutes, despite tripping over a molehill and having to walk/ hop for a bit afterwards. Not my most co-ordinated run, but I'm quite pleased.

Well done to everyone who ran in the heat yesterday - I feel faint enough from hearing about the 18 mile run, I'm just aiming to get to more than 5 at the moment!

Sirzy · 17/03/2014 15:47

No heat here this weekend been cloudy and dull.

Hope you didn't hurt yourself vlad

Well done Jeregrette!

Sorry to hear about your bad run Sirzy, a good run always a bad one Grin

I have sunburnt shoulders Shock

HalleLouja · 17/03/2014 18:16

Sirzy are you doing any other exercise other than running? Am pretty sure my HIIT class is helping me with my cardio fitness and running speed. Though I still have shit runs.

orangeflutie · 17/03/2014 19:02

Hi all I went out yesterday and did 16.7 miles. Can't believe I was running for 3 hours. Lovely weather for it though and I've got a pink tinge tooSmile Heel was ok in the end but was fairly wiped out for the rest of yesterday. Going to have to accept I'm not much use for the rest of Sundays for a bit but good excuse to put feet up.

ThursdayLast · 17/03/2014 19:12

Well done orange!
Never mind Sirzy, we all have bad days. I usually just write those off as training and consider them calorie burners.
The dog and I just did 2.5mile in 23 minutes. I was super speedy the last quarter of a mile because the light was fading vvv fast, and the woods can be a bit of a creepy place. Lots of screeching and squawking Shock

TwelveLeggedWalk · 17/03/2014 19:16

Hot hot hot here last weekend. Did 2 very slow 3 milers, which was a bit annoying after last weekend's progress.

In fairness one of them was going to be 4.5 miles but at 3 miles I noticed the dog was struggling. Walked a few paces and he dropped a satsuma he'd been carrying in his mouth the whole way, no wonder he was panting! Daft mutt Grin. By the time I'd got going again and stopped laughing I'd kind of lost my mojo by that point!

EATmum · 17/03/2014 19:40

Smiling at the image of your dog, Twelve!
Did 8 miles yesterday and didn't enjoy the heat- definitely not used to this sun malarkey; or all these other people that are now out and getting in my way walking by the river. But (gulp) it's just six days to go until my half marathon. Suddenly panicking. Please can some experienced types give me some calm reassurance? Advice? Thank you!

EauRouge · 18/03/2014 08:08

You'll be fine on the day. Make sure you go to bed early the couple of nights before, stay hydrated and get a decent breakfast on the day. Don't eat or drink anything new! I was nervous as hell the week before but fine on the day. Just try to relax and enjoy it :)

Just got back from a very muddy, hilly trail run in the woods. It was ace, I had to climb over a couple of fallen trees, run through ditches, duck under branches (and I'm only 5'4"!) and I saw a deer. I'm definitely going to trail run more often. I was sloooow as hell though.

vladthedisorganised · 18/03/2014 10:54

Keeping everything crossed for you, EAT!

Just wondered if I could ask a novice question - is it too risky to be running every day or should I be taking a rest day every other day? I'm currently averaging around 4 miles on my weekday runs and trying to go further (which is 4.7 so far, but trying to build that up) on my Saturday ones. I have circuit training on Thursdays which is helping my strength a lot, Fridays I take as a rest day but find I have the energy Monday - Wednesday to run every day.

My only concern is that I might do myself an injury if I don't rest up in between - my shins hurt a bit during the running itself but feel OK afterwards. Is it OK to do some speed work in between, or am I best resting up? Thanks for any advice!

Yeehaw · 18/03/2014 11:18

Hello. I just wondered if I could join. Currently running 3k continuously in about 25 mins and determined to build up to 5k and a parkrun. I use the runkeeper app to measure my time and distance. I'm not very quick Blush I'm 49 and used to be a good runner but have had surgery on both legs over the past few years so I now run like an old granny! Am trying to run 4x a week for a month and really hoping I will find it easier and can go for longer. No pain in joints so far, fingers crossed!

Jeregrette · 18/03/2014 14:54

Vlad

I think you should be wary of running every day. I would say 3 to 4 times a week with rest days/cross training in between to begin with but if you have been running a while a rest day can be a short run at a very easy pace.

Try to build up your mileage very gradually no more than ten percent per week

Jeregrette · 18/03/2014 14:59

EAT

" Please can some experienced types give me some calm reassurance? Advice? Thank you!"

Good luck for the HM. I was given some great advice for my HM. Start off really slowly, right at the back, then gradually you can find a pace you are comfortable with. If there are pacemakers running you could position yourself behind one to ensure you keep at an even pace.

I was aiming (in an ideal world)for sub 2:30 and kept with the 2:25 pacer all the way. Then at the end got ahead of her a little to knock a couple of minutes off. For your first HM your main goal is to finish so don't worry about time too much.

So many people head off too fast and cant keep it up and you'll end up overtaking loads of people later on who are struggling.

Finishing is a fantastic feeling though. I started crying the last mile i felt so emotional when I knew i would finish. You will never replicate that feeling at your next one (that one will be more about time).

Good luck

Sirzy · 18/03/2014 15:29

Hi yeehaw! No joint pain is always good

What would be best outside run in the wind possible earache issues (i always seem to get earache from the wind) or go to gym and run on treadmil bearing in mind my 10k is in 6 weeks and furthest ive ever ran is 5k on treadmill! The wimp in me is saying gym but then i think i really need to increase my road running before the big day. DH is home to look after kids at 5 and so far ive changed my mind every 5 mins. Help!!!!!

Sirzy · 18/03/2014 15:40

I would go for outside but I don't like treadmill running.

Can you not wear a hat to cover your ears?

OP posts:
trainersandaches · 18/03/2014 15:47

Mummy Lion can you wear a headband or hat to stop earache?

On a separate note, I have realised this weekend that having been running every week of 2014, my sports bra has now got too big or my waps are now too small to fill it I did 5k on Saturday and 10k on Sunday and had to cover my nipples in sudocreme for the second one and was still in agony.

It seems a bit of a waste to just chuck my bra because it's a ShockAbsorber one so was expensive and I only got it in the summer but I really do need the smaller size. It's a comedy size but on checking eBay there seems to be a bit of a market with secondhand bras so I am going to eBay it so someone else can use - I've probably done less than 100 miles in it to date.

youbethemummylion · 18/03/2014 15:48

My hat is a big fluffy one with flaps for the ears I fear I may overheat. Im off to raid DH's side of the wardrobe there may well be a more suitable hat.
